View Full Version : CleanMPG Newbie
mazda3mike 05-06-2007, 08:44 PM Hello, new member, first post. I have a 2006 Mazda3, 5 door, 5 speed ATX. Been learning about hypermiling for a few months now, even bought a ScanGaugeII. Although my car is obviously not a hybrid, and (perhaps even worse) is automatic, I've still been able to use some of the techniques posted here. My gas mileage went from about 30 mpg on mostly highway driving to about 35. I'll keep watching the forums here and reading along.
Chuck 05-06-2007, 08:51 PM Welome to CleanMPG!
At least automatics have improved since the 1970's - some are CVT or connect physically on overdrive.
mazda3mike 05-06-2007, 08:57 PM I'm sort of forced to use automatic, my wife doesn't drive a stick and refuses to learn. Oh well. :(
So how does everyone get that cool mpg image in their sig?
tbaleno 05-06-2007, 09:06 PM Like this: replace 129 with the number of your car. You can find it by hovering over the vehicle name in the milage logs page and looking at the viewcar= number in the status bar of your browser.

mazda3mike 05-06-2007, 09:32 PM For some reason it's not working. When I preview it shows up but not when I look in the forum itself.
mazda3mike 05-06-2007, 09:33 PM DOH! There it is. Guess it doesn't apply itself to existing posts. Thanks!!

Welcome.
I had the same frustration expecting the sig to appear on old posts.:(
22 years ago I had a "no manual" wife like yours, but she came around and never turned back. Positive encouragement is key.:Banane59:
diamondlarry 05-07-2007, 03:01 AM Welcome to CleanMPG mazda3mike! Check out posts by Wayne(xcel) and he'll have you at 40 or above in no time with your automatic.:)
SlowHands 05-07-2007, 06:39 AM Welcome mazda3mike - I hope you can encourage your wife to learn, be patient and make it easy on her by teaching first in a parking lot with no one around. I taught my wife back before she was even my girlfriend... she enjoys driving a stick, was very happy when I bought the Ranger with the 5-speed.
Bonus for me from your question: Now I get to have the cool signature thingie too!:)

Working on it!! My other car is a '74 VW bug convertible 4 speed. It's so easy to drive she should have no problem learning. She's mostly just afraid of wrecking it I think.

40!! Holy ****! My personal best to date is 36.8, and that was pretty darn hard! Tires are at 36 psi (recommended is 32), I'm using only manumatic shifting, and traffic was unusually light that tank. Before I paid much attention to my mileage I was getting 29-30 overall, now I'm at ~34-35 overall. 40 would be quite the accomplishment!

Glad I could help you out!

When Wayne first told me that 60 mpg tanks and 70 mpg segments were possible in my Saturn, I thought he was crazy.(There are some who think he is anyway but that's a whole other story;) :D ) Since then, I have gotten a 63 mpg tank and a few high 50's tanks and numerous 70+ segments.
mazda3mike 05-07-2007, 06:48 PM 70!!! I'm anxious to hear (and read) what he has to say!
