View Full Version : Week of April 23rd - April 29th, 2007
Hi All:
___Finally got a break with the winds and the temps into the night/early morning hours. The 25 to 30 mph headwind I fought into work yesterday kept up the strength somewhat and I received a nice 15 to 20 mph tail wind for 2/3 the way home. Temps from 66 - 70 degrees F. Nobody was on the Chicago Interstates this morning which let me do what I wanted. 61.4 displayed for a 63 + actual. 955 miles out and still ~ 1 gallon left. I hope the winds calm for the push to 1,000 tomorrow at noon ;)
___Good Luck

Right Lane Cruiser 04-23-2007, 06:07 AM Wow, Wayne! I'm guessing you know the limits of your tank because you've run her dry before? Don't think I'm brave enough to get that close to the bottom...
I didn't do as well as you but I did manage to do the best yet into work... 46.1mpg over 25.6mi. :woot:
Still trying to find a good mix of just milking the mpgs by backing off the pedal ever so slightly, NICE ON, and Pulse and Glide. I want to do more FASing but it is hard to get a spot where no one is around so they don't notice the headlights blinking...
Even so, I did manage to keep it up in the 50's for much of the cruising (1/2 maybe?) -- just not for long stretches.
At any rate, good luck to YOU! I think you have that 1,000 mile tank in the bag.
:driveby1:
Bruce 04-23-2007, 06:49 AM 45.5 MPG for 15.4 miles at 47°F this morning -- a new PR. I've hit 45+ once before, but it was with an optimistic fill adjustment. Tank's at 42 MPG with about 5.5 gallons left. I may be able to squeak out another 500-mile tank.
Got out for a 39 mile bike ride yesterday, so I should be in good shape for riding to work again once I've recovered -- probably tomorrow or Wednesday.
Chuck 04-23-2007, 07:08 AM 77.3mpg at 66F after a late start. My glide out of the alley was ruined by someone at the end - penality for starting late. Had more than my fair share of muttering about the bad drivers. One was doing the crack addict pass and I did the butt wiggle (at least that mockery does not waste gas)...just as a silver Insight like mine appeared. :o
CoasterToasterXB 04-23-2007, 07:39 AM Around town small trips = 44 mpg for the day. Every trip I take seems to be 3 to 7 miles where I live. Not to mention all the lights:(
psyshack 04-23-2007, 08:08 AM 48 mpg for the drive in this morning. 66f,,, no wind. Will have a head wind this afternoon.
46 mpg for the drive home.
Tanks at 47 mpg.

FireEngineer 04-23-2007, 08:12 AM Good start for the week, 79.7MPG for the morning commute.
Wayne
PaleMelanesian 04-23-2007, 08:17 AM So close! 49.8 this morning. I saw 52 along the way, but the lights on the last 5 blocks were all out of sync.
Tank at 49.3 / 230 miles. Aiming for a 50.
efusco 04-23-2007, 09:16 AM Just a quick pat of my own back.... Tank started poorly during the cold snap a couple weeks ago. At 80 miles on the tank I sat at an abysmal 49.2mpg. I'm now at about 300 miles and 62.0mpg with better weather and good EBH use to thank as well as the ability to stick to my usual commute. Would be thrilled to hold the tank over 60 the remaining ~200 miles I have left.
Skwyre7 04-23-2007, 10:26 AM After my tire rotation and alignment on Friday, my glides are a little different. It might take a couple trips to get used to them. I also have completely removed my grill blocks, upper and lower. 63.9 MPG at 61ºF this morning. I might stick the upper grill blocks back in every morning. At least until I get my EBH installed.
Hi All
___Temps from 65 -70 degrees F with 15 -20 mph side winds. 52.3 to the Shell station. Probably had enough to make it all the way to work but it would have been close. 49.3 from the station to work on the new tank.
___Good Luck

I made it!! Personal bests all the way around!
I only had the ScanGauge for half of this tank so the next one should be better yet. :D
1) 48.0mpg for 34.6mi (Work to Costco for gas)
2) 40.0mpg for 1.5mi (Costco to home -- thought it was 1.9mi -- did I really FAS THAT much??)
Tank at 42.29mpg for a distance of 542.5mi!!! :woot: :woot:
Made my average tick over another 1/10, too.
Temp today is right at 66, and I only hope I can keep this up. Huge props to GaryG for sending me this jewel of electronics! :Banane35:
tbaleno 04-23-2007, 04:14 PM when you fas don't you put the key back in the on position to keep the electronics going? You shouldn't lose .4 miles in 2 miles.
Bruce 04-23-2007, 04:25 PM Interfacility travel this morning: 47 MPG going down, 49.8 on the way back.
Spring came and went this weekend. It was 92°F today.
A 27 MPG short trip after work, then 45.5 MPG on the way home -- a new PR for the homeward commute, thanks to the steamy temps. Water temps hit 216°F even after removing the upper portion of the grill block -- the fan kicks in at 207°F -- but today is probably as warm as it'll get for a few more months.
It was very easy for glides to come in too hot today unless nobody was in front of me.
Tank's at 43 MPG for 411 miles, 3.6 gallons remaining. The odometer mileage is around 418, so I should have new best tank coming.
I'm thinking the bicycle will be a lot more comfortable...it gets pretty hot with no AC or windows. My fix has been to change to a T-shirt and shorts before leaving work.
Right Lane Cruiser 04-23-2007, 04:27 PM tbaleno -- I do indeed key back on... Maybe I'm just misremembering the distance. ;)

JimboK 04-23-2007, 07:21 PM 68.2 MPG on the way into work this morning (short commute), temps in the 50s. This evening figured to be great with temps in the 80s. 65 MPG for the first leg of the trip to the state park for a jog/walk.
I never finished the workout. About a half mile into it I stepped on a rock or a root (not sure which) and turned my ankle over. A sprain, for sure, and bad enough I couldn't walk out. I had to call the on-duty park ranger to shuttle me off the trail in his Gator. To make matters worse, it was my right ankle, so it made working the pedals interesting -- and uncomfortable. I still managed a P&G segment, but frankly when I got home I wasn't too interested in my daily total. I did notice the tank MPG's still at 72, with about 360 miles and 5 pips on it. One consolation.
I'll probably take off work tomorrow. I might need to go pick up some crutches.
diamondlarry 04-23-2007, 07:34 PM Way to go Sean! Another week(or less) and we'll be hearing about 50+ segments from you.:Banane47:
Here are my numbers for today:
54.0-5.8 miles
53.6-9.6
63.0-9.6
62.6-6.3
67.8-9.2
63.6-9.3
Average for today: 60.4
I've been experimenting with pulses in 4th from 25-40 mph. Looks like I may be on to something. I may try going from 25-35 tomorrow.
basjoos 04-23-2007, 08:16 PM THIS LAST TANK IS THE WORST MILEAGE I HAVE EVER GOTTEN since I added the aero mods to my car. I got a lousy 53mpg after a 501 mile road trip on I-26 and I-95 (Greenville, SC to Beaufort, SC and back) while driving at a cruising speed of 80mph (with short sprints up to 95mph while doing coastdown tests). Results of the coastdown tests at 78F, 90mph to 80mph (10 sec), 80mph to 70mph (12 sec), 70mph to 60mph (13 sec), 60mph to 50mph (14 sec). But then again, my car in its pre-aero days wouldn't have been able to comfortably maintain a 80 mph cruise (the original max speed in 5th was 93mph) and its mileage would have been in the mid 30's.
Right Lane Cruiser 04-23-2007, 09:28 PM Thanks, Larry! I'm hoping to hit those levels but it is going to take some serious tightening up of my technique. I'm game, though!
Had to do a run to the dentist and didn't quite get up to the level I did on the way home. :(
1) 45.6mpg for 10.6mi (Home to Dentist)
2) 42.9mpg for 11mi (Dentist to home -- ouch!! Preoccupied with getting home by 24 and mistimed some lights :o )
Temps down around 60...
Let's see what I can pull tomorrow (it takes my mind off of the Saturday wedding rapidly approaching....)
msirach 04-23-2007, 09:39 PM 4 mph headwind this morning. I managed 71mpg.
10 mph tailwind coming home mid afternoon. 87.1mpg @ 60 mph
Right Lane Cruiser 04-23-2007, 09:47 PM basjoos -- You're cruising around my old stomping grounds! I'm originally from Spartanburg.
I'll have to ask my folks if they've ever seen your car out on the road. :)
BailOut 04-23-2007, 10:54 PM I fueled up after 13 days today and got 47MPG. This is becoming a common number for me and I'm beginning to assume this is where my mileage will stay until the weather warms up, I make changes to my car (like synthetic oil, an EBH, it gets broken in, etc.), or I make some trips other than over the mountain to work.
Bruce 04-24-2007, 05:59 AM Hope you're well soon, Jim...rest, ice, compression, elevation.
65°F this morning...my warmest morning yet since I've started hypermiling. Segments of 37/42/54 MPG for a 47 MPG total for 15.4 miles -- a new PR. And it wasn't perfect...I had to hit the brakes for a traffic merge in the second segment.
Tank's around 43.1 MPG for 435 miles, 3.1 gallons remaining. Barring crappy weather, I should be able to get a 500-mile tank with a comfortable margin.
I'm looking forward to getting a tank of good gas in the car to clean up the injectors. I may try some Shell V-Power if the tank cost difference is comparable to a bottle of fuel injector cleaner; otherwise, I'll just get a tank of Shell or Mobil regular unleaded. Any thoughts?
Right Lane Cruiser 04-24-2007, 06:20 AM Ugh. Forgot to plug in the block heater last night...
Still keeping above 40mpg, though!!
1) 44.6mpg for 25.6mi (Home to work)
Temp is 44 this morning.
Chuck 04-24-2007, 06:54 AM Left late last night - 90mpg...but it's slightly downhill from work.
82mpg at 60F this morning.
brick 04-24-2007, 06:56 AM Back in town and busy as hell, but it looks like the weather followed me home so this tank is looking up. This morning's ride was great with a temp of 61F and only a couple of crazies to deal with. Pulled it up from 54.2mpg to 55.0mpg with 250mi already on the tank, which means that the segment was dangerously close to the 70mpg mark. I'll be downright thrilled with the home-bound segment if I can keep it above 55.
JimboK 04-24-2007, 07:23 AM Hope you're well soon, Jim...rest, ice, compression, elevation.
Thanks, Bruce. I appreciate that. That's where I'm at right now: resting at home, Ace bandage, ankle atop an ice pack propped up on a chair.
I made the trip out for crutches this morning and got 74.6 MPG. So the bum ankle hasn't affected the hypermiling too much.
PaleMelanesian 04-24-2007, 07:59 AM Last night with a stop at the doctor:
53.9 mpg / 13.5 miles
This morning:
54.8 / 10.1 mi / 73F = personal best morning!
Tank at 49.5 / 255 mi. Still hoping for a 50mpg tank.
CoasterToasterXB 04-24-2007, 08:03 AM Thanks, Bruce. I appreciate that. That's where I'm at right now: resting at home, Ace bandage, ankle atop an ice pack propped up on a chair.
In assisting your rehab you also want to make small letters with your ankles. Try to do the whole alphabet. Replicating the letters shapes will get the surrounding muscles stronger and will get you back on your feet sooner. It will also flush out any pooling blood. Another great rehab exercise is to pick marbles up with your toes while your heel is on the ground and keep moving the marbles from one pile to another.
Today I got 47 MPG to work. My new Best. :)
psyshack 04-24-2007, 08:04 AM Drive in was good for 52 mpg. Tanks at 48 mpg.

tbaleno 04-24-2007, 12:44 PM I eased off on my efforts to concentrate more on the basics and I have been able to break out of my slump. I suffered from the trying to hard syndrom. My mileage this morning went up 4mpg despite a slight headwind.
JimboK 04-24-2007, 01:26 PM In assisting your rehab you also want to make small letters with your ankles. Try to do the whole alphabet ....
Thanks, never heard of that before. Here's a variant: Writing seductive words with my toes on my fiancee's back and have her guess what I'm saying. Do you think that will help? The ankle, that is.:D
mparrish 04-24-2007, 01:45 PM To make matters worse, it was my right ankle, so it made working the pedals interesting -- and uncomfortable.
Jim, hope the recovery is a quick one. Your quote above immediately made me think of Bull Durham:

My right.
Good. Good. That's terrific...

Not the hypermiling foot!!!
Tank still at 73.3 / 411 miles / 4 pips. Fillup on Saturday before a 250 mile highway trip. Aiming for 60mpg round trip with SGII's help.
Hi Jim:

Right Lane Cruiser 04-24-2007, 03:55 PM Something odd going on here... I'm noticing that my current trip mpg actually DROPS for a significant length of time when I FAS!
I FASed a good bit on the last stretch to my house from work today and I actually LOST mileage when I know I should have been gaining it. With engine off I watched the gauge drop by 2/10ths as I coasted up to a red light -- and this is at the end of a 36 mile trip. Any clue what's going on here? Several of my FASes were actually negated because the engine wasn't off long enough to overcome the drop at the beginning...
What am I doing wrong? I don't recall seeing this before yesterday. (I didn't say anything because I was hoping it was a fluke but it seems worse today)
At any rate...
1) 46.1mpg for 36.2mi (Work to home, bit of a head wind)
Temps at 64.
Hi Sean:
___You have discovered a quirk wrt the SG-II and many non-hybrids. When initially entering into a FAS, it will hold onto whatever its current instantaneous is until it regains data showing 9999 mpg’s while still counting some of the distance traveled until re-initialization. I fight this in the Accord all the time unfortunately but it is not SG-II’s fault, it is the fault of the BUS that our current automobiles send the OBD-II data down. In some cases, it can take upwards of 5-seconds for the OBD-II stream to re-initialize after a FAS (and reboot) while you are stuck with whatever the reading was the instant the key went off. Here is an example. Let us say you are accelerating from cold and have 7.6 mpg’s showing on your SG-II at the point you enter into a FAS. If you key off at that exact moment, your car will hold that 7.6 while still racking up maybe 2 seconds of distance even though you have already entered into your FAS. A way to counteract it in some cases and helps the longevity of your automobile is to enter into a Glide (NICE-On) for about a second and then key off when the SG-II maxes out at 25 - 250 mpg depending on how fast you are traveling and its idle speed at the time. Sometimes you can key off at just the right 10th of a second to force it into reading 9999 mpg’s. I can usually nail it every other to every third time but I always wait for an idle stabilization and then key off for ICE/CAT longevity and to max the SG-II before entering into a FAS.

Right Lane Cruiser 04-24-2007, 04:37 PM Ah! :lightbulb:
Thanks for the quick reply, Wayne!
That explains it. I've been pulsing and then cutting the engine immediately after for the last couple of days in an attempt to minimize the fuel used right before a FAS. The gauge behavior makes perfect sense now.
I think my trip home should have been at least another .5 mpg higher than I have on the gauge for this reason -- almost the entire last 2 miles of the trip I kept losing out on that display and couldn't figure out why! :o
The upside is that this means my readings have been lower than they should have been. I'll work on getting them higher tomorrow. :D
diamondlarry 04-24-2007, 05:49 PM It seems as though I am immune to the phenomenon you are mentioning. It probably has something to do with my injector-kill switch and not having to shut the electronics down. I'll keep an eye on it tomorrow just to make sure.
Today has been fairly good for FE. Temps started at ~55F and got as high as 69F.
Today's numbers:
1) 53.8-5.8 miles
2) 58.2-9.6
3) 58.7-9.6
4) 60.0-6.3
5) 70.4-5.2
6) 77.0-5.2
7) 70.0-4.9
8) 68.6-4.8
Average for today: 62.2
Right Lane Cruiser 04-24-2007, 05:55 PM Larry, you also seem to be immune to mere mortal fuel economy recently!!
77mpg?!
Kingsly 04-24-2007, 05:58 PM Today was good to me. I made all my lights except one, which is always long so I just FS-ed it. Managed to merge onto the freeway in between two semi's (one pushing and one pulling!) that lasted all the way to my exit. From there my only problem is the long stretch of road that I normally glide across had a flatbed backing up, so I had to use brakes and re-accelerate from a stop after the truck was gone.
As usual, I go killed on the big hill that I live on top of. I P&Ged it up and made it into the driveway with 30MPG on the aFCD (before the hill it read ~36MPG :( )
psyshack 04-24-2007, 06:12 PM 44 mpg for the drive home. A good headwind and rain didn't help one bit.

rhwinger 04-24-2007, 06:13 PM Drove home after work yesterday and got home around 4, temps in the 80’s so it was a nice drive.
Left the house with M in the hybrid for a get together about 6:30, so the car sat cooling off in the garage for 2 ½ hrs. (read: engine not cold, but not fully warmed up) I reset the trip odometer backing out of the garage as this is a habit now. M was reading an ad flyer as we drove to the meeting, which turned out to be 4 miles away via some gently rolling hills. I just tried to drive like the fanatic that I have become, but tried not to be too obvious so that M wouldn’t be annoyed. I noticed the mpg indicator was providing some really nice numbers as we drove along pulsing and gliding, so like I say, I was trying my best. When we arrived at the meeting, I just couldn’t help it. So after the car (and engine) stopped, before turning the key off, I looked down at the indicator and announced out loud: “Hmm – well that’s not too bad. We got 86.5 mpg on the way here. I wish I had my camera – I’d take a picture!” I’m a sick puppy.
diamondlarry 04-24-2007, 06:14 PM Larry, you also seem to be immune to mere mortal fuel economy recently!!
77mpg?!
Don't make too much of those numbers in comparison to your's or anyone else's. My commute is probably 80-85% or more on rural county roads that are, for the most part, 1 mile apart. What little traffic that does come from behind generally whips right around me without any hassles. I was telling Tom on Saturday that I have a theory on getting people to pass quickly: I think that the slower I go, the less trouble I have with tailgaters. If the speed limit is 50 and I'm cruising 40-45, they tend to hang on a lot longer than if I'm going 25-30 or less at the end of a glide. If hills or oncoming traffic makes it too difficult to get around me I'll speed up a little until there are better conditions for them to get around me. I've also started experimenting with a new acceleration technique. I pulse from 25 up to 40 in 4th at a throttle setting from 50-75 or so. Looks like it may be working. Also, I think I may be into mostly summer fuel now. Keep up the hard work Sean and you'll be seeing 50's and 60's soon.
brick 04-24-2007, 08:05 PM I don't normally bother reporting on the trip home but I had a good one. It was 75F when I walked out to the car with cabin temps somewhere in the mid to high 80s I'd guess. The climate control was set to auto at 80F, which resulted in just enough cool air through the vents to keep me and the batteries happy. (Toward the end I could tell that the compressor wasn't doing much work.) All the way home I just "drove casual," taking the good opportunities and letting the bad bets go. This car loooooooves warm weather. :D Managed to pull that 55.0 up to 55.1mpg, which doesn't sound like much until you take into account a 300ft elevation gain and crappy terrain the whole way. Looks like the FE gods are smiling down at the moment.
Bruce 04-24-2007, 08:28 PM Had an emergency interfacility trip this afternoon, then drove home. 49 MPG on the way down, then around 46.7 total for the day -- this morning was 47, so the ride home must have been in the low 40s. I was fighting a headwind going home.
Tank's at 43.6 for well over 500 miles, 1.5 gallons remaining. I'm planning to ride the bike tomorrow, so I'll fill up Thursday afternoon.
A fellow gearhead at work is selling me a bottle of top-notch injector cleaner, so I'll throw that in with some good gas on Thursday to clean things up. It should be good for another 10K after that.
The gearheads at work seem to stick with the cheap gas and a bottle of injector cleaner every few thousand miles, so I'll probably do the same.
locutus 04-24-2007, 10:00 PM Trips in the rain tonight for me.
81.1 / 11.6 miles / 54F
68.1 / 11.5 miles / 52F
Today's average was 74.2 over 23.1 miles, enough to kick the tank up another 0.1 to 73.4 / 199 miles / 8 pips.
I'm curious, what kind of MPG hit have others noticed from driving in rain? That first segment was almost 10% off where it has been for these temps.
Hi Jered:
___Funny you should ask about rain given we are getting blasted with it right now ;)
___On the way out to the Tour De Sol last year, she had touched 105 just before hitting a 10 + mile stop and crawler - traffic jam. After getting through that, she started climbing again and then the rain came. I was hoping to see 110 before the weather took its toll but it arrived a few hours early :(
http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/516/3L.jpg
___After battling the storm all day, afternoon and evening while crossing Indiana, Ohio and some of Pennsylvania, she arrived in Pittsburgh at 96.x something. Maybe a 15% loss?
___Tonight’s drive was similar to yesterday except for a 10 - 15 mph head/side wind in heavy rain for 7/8 of the trip. 45.8 into the drive. A touch more then a 15% hit due to the rain. The head/side winds tonight did not help but the rain was absolutely murder :ccry:
___Good Luck

Right Lane Cruiser 04-25-2007, 06:23 AM Thanks for the kind words, Larry!
Temp on the way to work was 43 this morning. Last night I raised the tire pressure another 6psi to get it right at 50. I tried coasting over the top third of hills this morning to see if that would help the average and it seems to have -- that's about when enough speed has bled off that I can't maintain the instantaneous over 50mpg or so.
I also threw in an extra FAS this morning and made sure I had some idle time to get the number up before cutting the engine out... resulting in another personal best for the trip in to work of:
1) 46.1mpg for 25.6mi (Home to work) :D
It is beginning to appear that I might actually get better numbers pulsing between 55 and 60mph than between 50 and 55mph -- most likely because the engine has a bit more torque in that range.
I'm hoping I can tighten this up some more because I actually touched 45mpg at less than 5 miles from my house this morning but had a hard time maintaining it after that point.
Bruce 04-25-2007, 07:16 AM Finally rode the fixed gear in today...perfect DWB (no mechanical brakes, just fuel cut) and DWL within limits, a little traffic side draft. Negligible effective fuel consumption for 16 miles at 42°F.
That was the easy half...now I need to ride home. :)
brick 04-25-2007, 07:19 AM The upward trend continues. The tank climbed from 55.1 to 55.8mpg over the morning commute thanks in part to leaving late and getting stuck in crawling traffic at exactly the right time. It was beautiful because I hopped on the highway and saw brake lights at the top of the hill, so I started a warp-stealth DWB maneuver a little before the climb started. I coasted 95% of the way up the hill (it's a small hill ;) ) and just barely had to touch the brakes at the top. Only problem was that after I got started again traffic kept on crawling at 5-8mph, which corresponds to the ICE idling at 25-30mpg and no stopping for the system to move to S4. The solution: EV switch! After toggling that, I crawled along silently for a solid 1/3 to 1/2 mile without bringing the pack down below even the half way point. Traffic then picked up and I was back to normal operation.
Never thought traffic would do me any favors!

tbaleno 04-25-2007, 10:35 AM I had one of my best trips this spring in to work today. I tried an alternate route which added 1 mile to my commute but avoided two bottlenecks. I ended up with 53MPG thanks to a slight tail wind. Temp was about 40F.

Likewise! A number of things helped today - damp air (but no rain - I understand damp air is less dense?), very light wind, minimal traffic, a slight tweak of my route which extended a glide and cut one of the necessary pulses in half, and hitting a light I normally miss. All of this combined for my best "cold start" (EBH-aided) into work ever:
85.3 / 7.0 miles / 46F :D
This kicked the tank up to 73.7 / 206 miles / 8 pips. I'll give most of that gain back on the way home though. :( Traffic is much worse and there are a couple of substantial unavoidable hills, one with a stoplight in the middle of it. My return trip is in need of some serious tweaking. ;)
tarabell 04-25-2007, 11:15 AM This is more like it, I'm starting to hit last year's benchmark numbers along my commute again. :) So, 66.5mpg for my ride in to work today (19.1 miles, 57F). The tank is just over 60.
mparrish 04-25-2007, 02:32 PM I doubt I've ever hit 85mpgs @ 46F over my first 7 miles to work :). Awesome.
Short trips not helping the tank today. Sitting at 73.4 / 485 miles / 3 pips, and will fall towards 73.0 by the time I'm back uphill.
There is nothing, nothing better than catching a yellow light just before a long downhill segment. The traffic ahead leaves you, the traffic behind stops, and the road is yours to glide on and on and on at a constant speed. If I were really hard core, I'd time yellows instead of greens.
After many months of tweaking, my route to work is quite possibly completely solidified. My driving on that route is still undergoing quite a bit of tweaking though.
Some much needed construction of some South Austin highways & highway ramps may soon begin. Hurry up Austin! There are too many folks clogging my "Prius highway". Buy an Insight for your new highway too please ;).
Austin Yaris - I had to take a trip north today, and your North Austin neighbors are noticeably more aggressive. I hurried back to the laid back attitudes & driving of South Austin.............ahhhhhhh.
Skwyre7 04-25-2007, 02:42 PM Whew! I've been super busy. I'll probably be super busy for the rest of the week and possibly next week too. I can't believe work is taking up my CleanMPG time. :D
Anyway, yesterday morning was great! 72.0 MPG! Yesterday home wasn't great. I left 30 minutes late, and hit much heavier traffic. And it was hot, so the A/C had to come on for part of the trip. 55.6 MPG. I was less than thrilled.
This morning it felt like I had to fight to get into a stealth glide. I don't think the Prius was awake yet. Anyway, 63.9 MPG. This is probably the tenth time I got 63.9 MPG. I think I might have hit a plateau, except for occasional commutes of brilliance (like yesterday morning).
Hi All:
___It is great to see everybody starting to hit on all cylinders. I see HCH-I’s, II’s, Prius’, Civic’s, SL2’s, Prizm’s, Elantra’s doing what the auto manufacturers would say is impossible yet here it is in black and white. Congrats to all and we have only seen the beginning. Just wait until we are all enjoying 75 + degree temps and the numbers get even more stupid ;)
___46 – 50 degree temps with 10 - 20 mph tail and side winds and light rain ofr 2/3 the drive in. A nice 53.9 to show. The light rain slowed traffic down about 5 mph and I left another 10 minutes earlier then normal to try and avoid the stop and crawls. Only ran into (1) ¼ mile of mess. Other then that, nice, easy and slowly moving traffic for a 50 mph average.

brick 04-25-2007, 03:29 PM Another really great afternoon segment. I mostly attribute this one to playing with my new Garmin GPS, which I allowed to guide the way. I vetoed most of its decisions for the first 2/3 of the way but let it guide me for the last few miles. What it led me to was some of the most beautiful P&G territory I've ever seen. We're talking a desolate, straight country road with a 35mph limit and a very slight down-hill grade. That lasted for miles where I would usually be fighting stop signs and lights and that ridiculous 5-way stop that makes me nervous every time. The effect was killer: 55.8mpg turned into 55.7mpg instead of 55.1-55.3 like I had expected. The only down-side is that it does add a little bit of distance to the route...maybe a mile, maybe less. Might be worth it in the afternoon just to bypass the usual rat's nest, though.
You can never tweak a segment too much. ;)

Kingsly 04-25-2007, 05:08 PM Today didn't go so well. My daily commute I was able to hold 28MPG (I usually hover between 28 and 35, so today was already on the low end... :o ) and then found out I had to go pick up my sister from school. Well, school is far, up an huge mountain, and, well, just bad all around for hypermilling. Just the one pickup and my in-the-bag 30MPG tank is now looking like it is going to be a 28MPG tank... :(
Right Lane Cruiser 04-25-2007, 05:25 PM Thanks for the encouragement, Wayne!
I'm still trying out new ideas, but my mileage is dropping due to traffic patterns (though the trip averages have continued to move up incrementally). Tried a variation of the very last .5 miles of my ride home and it managed to maintain what I had fought for on the highway home. I'll keep that but I think I'm going to have to change the rest of my route somehow.
1) 46.4mpg for 36.4mi (Work to home)

Still have the trip to the Church tonight to look forward to -- maybe I can get it up close to 50mpg again???
JimboK 04-25-2007, 06:40 PM A decent day today, all things considered. I made my cross-town commute, and despite having a sore ankle (actually didn't affect driving), forgetting to plug in the block heater last night, and a stop at the barber shop on the way home, I managed 78.6 MPG for the day. The tank is sitting at 72.6 MPG with about 420 miles on it and 4 pips left. I'm cautiously optimistic I can keep it above 70 until fillup. It certainly will be another personal best, regardless.

1) 44.1mpg for 20.9mi (Home to Church)
2) 51.2mpg for 21.5mi (Church to home) :woot:
The way down was typical with lots of people rushing around me -- hard to get safe coasting in when people approach your bumper at about 35 mph...
On the way back as soon as I got to the highway I started my ratcheting of the mpg by pulsing between 50 and 55. The only goal was to make each glide give me at least one tenth more than what I started the last pulse with. I couldn't manage that on the hills (of course) but I did try to use what Wayne recommended for Kingsly's large hill at the end of his trip home. I actually got it as high as 51.5 but the slow stuff the rest of the way home tends to sap that... The last .5 I FASed twice and managed to recover almost all of my lost mileage (got as low as 50.2). The tank is currently at 45.9mpg :D
That was NOT easy. I need new routes. ;)

Just working that pulsing like nobody's business!
Temp at 45F, too.
Bruce 04-26-2007, 06:14 AM Despite the rain, I got through the bike ride home okay with some help from a little caffeine...just enough to make me feel strong and happy.
36 MPG in the upper 40s and rain for the 18 miles to and from ballroom dance class last night, then 41 MPG at 37°F and fog for 19 miles this morning.
Tank's down to 43.2 MPG for 541 miles, .5 gal (.7 actual) remaining -- a new PR for the total mileage. The SG reports a bit low, so I may have ticked over 550 on the odometer.
I'll have to let my dad know...I believe his best tank in a Chevy (400 mile typical range) was 528 miles, but that was a single trip on the expressway with no stops, and he usually fills the tank until it spills. I'm just going back and forth to work and putting in an extra couple of clicks.
A bottle of injector cleaner goes in just before some more cheap gas right after work. I'm assuming that I should include the injector cleaner as part of the tank total, since it contains petroleum distillates.
I already have the cleaner, but in the future I'll probably just tank up with Shell V-Power every 3-6K instead. As far as I can tell, it'll do the same thing but cost less for a tank -- the cost difference over normal gas is about 26c/gallon locally, so that's $3.12 for a 12-gallon fill, whereas FI cleaner is $3.50-5.00. The V-power also has more octane to boot, and no packaging to recycle or load up a landfill.
This next tank should be fairly decent...I have some more interfacility travel scheduled and a long bike ride to support on Saturday. It'll be interesting to see how Saturday goes...I'll be hauling around 30 gallons of water over the hills in CT.
JimboK 04-26-2007, 06:16 AM Great commute this morning. Better-than-normal P&G conditions + temps in the 60s = 75 MPG for the trip. Don't know if it's the best ever for this particular (short) commute, but it's pretty darn close.

Skwyre7 04-26-2007, 07:32 AM Jim, you must have had a warm pocket of air around you this morning. It was about 55ºF for my commute. I had to stop around the corner from the house and put my upper grill block back in. I should have put the bottom in too, because I couldn't keep the ICE warm. 78.0 / 7.0 miles / 45F into work this morning in moderate rain. A little rain, missed my light, a little worse traffic, and suddenly I'm down 10% from yesterday. Not that I'm complaining about 78, but I know 85 is possible. ;)

The tank's at 73.5 / 219 miles / 8 pips.
JimboK 04-26-2007, 12:13 PM Jim, you must have had a warm pocket of air around you this morning.
No, your figure is probably closer to what mine was. I didn't check the local TV stations for the current temp this morning, so that was based on the car's initial report of OAT. That's sometimes on the high side because of the EBH.

Yesterday was an interesting day, mainly on the good side. Many short trips brought the tank down nearly a full point to 72.5. When you have a 70+ tank, I'm coming to realize that short trips are an automatic, unavoidable catastrophe to your average. :). Well, that boosted an already present interest in reading about, purchasing, and installing yet another Prius toy........the EV button. Thanks YET AGAIN to all of the great information on this site re: the install and the effects. I can't wait to see it's impact.
In addition to handling short trips, it may prove extremely handy on my commute. I have a 60 foot drop from mile 0.4 to mile 1.2. Even with the EBH, the ICE is still warming up and running. The descent is enough that I can usually regen down, but the iMPG still shows 90-120 because of warmup. I can't wait to get to the top of the hill and shut that sucker down for 0.8 miles. 110 here we come! :)
I've been lamenting my lack of access to an outlet for my EBH at work, and I am still working on a solution. But that solution may not be so pressing for a while. Summer arrived yesterday, as we hit the 90s for the first time. Prius said 92 as I left. And wouldn't you know it........I noticed a much quicker warm up and stage progression. By the time it is 102 in July, an extra boost from an EBH may literally be just a few degrees and not worth the trouble. It kinda seems obvious now, but like most things in life the light bulb does not go "ding" as soon as one would like ;)
Oh yeah, another positive about my commute that recently hit me now that it is getting hotter? I go downhill to work and uphill from work. The opposite would be a problem. Why? I may never need AC in the morning ever, which means no AC hit on my long glide downhill. AC will be needed going back, but my frequent pulsing does a good job fighting the AC pack draw. Very fortunate.
Bruce 04-26-2007, 02:27 PM I've been lamenting my lack of access to an outlet for my EBH at work, and I am still working on a solution.
One solution might be to purchase a 12V cig lighter plug with leads, a rectifier diode, battery clamps, a deep-discharge 12V battery (e.g. Optima), an inverter, a wall outlet timer and an extension cord. Put the diode in line with one lead of the plug so that the battery is charged but not discharged by the cig lighter (on the positive side, the line on the diode is nearer the battery's lead) and attach the clamps. Attach the inverter to the battery, plug the wall timer into the inverter, plug the extension cord into the battery and plug the EBH into the extension cord.
Voila. The battery runs the EBH just before you're ready to leave work, and the car charges the battery while you're driving. You'd need to unplug the cig lighter when the EBH is used to prevent draining your starter battery.
Bonus points for running the extension through the firewall instead of a cracked window. That way, you can leave it plugged in all the time.
Not that I've tried it; caveat emptor.

I had a light day as far as miles driving goes. I had to go to my mechanic's after work so my wife and I drove seperately. I had a creaking-type noise coming from the back. It turns out that it was just the sway-bar bushings getting a little tired. I didn't have them fixed, for now. Most hypermilers shouldn't need sway-bars except maybe for the occasional death-turn.:D I did get a bit of sad news while I was there though. The owner sold his business. He was one of the very few mechanics that could be trusted. There were times when I would go in and tell him I needed something like a new muffler and he was able to repair the old one and save me some $$'s. The trip to my work was 53.3 for 5.9 miles. From my work to the mechanic was 64.1 over 13.3 miles. From there to home was 64.0 over 7.6 miles. The new mechanic took my car for a 2.5 mile test drive when he was diagnosing the problem but I don't know what his mpg was; I'm guessing it was significantly lower than mine.:D My average for the day was 55.1.

You mean you've been pumping out those 100s without the EV switch? I think you will be pleasantly surprised, and 110+ will be well within your reach with good EV usage. My primary use of it is in situations just as you describe above - when I haven't hit S3a (at >=35 MPH) or S4 yet but I'm in a spot where I would be ICE-off if I *was* in S4. That 0.8 mile downhill you have sounds like a perfect usage. :D
tarabell 04-26-2007, 11:31 PM In assisting your rehab you also want to make small letters with your ankles.
I've been meaning to say that these are not only great exercises for rehabbing ankles, but also good for keeping your 'hypermiler foot' in shape. You can do them while watching tv, and if you don't have marbles, throw an old towel on the floor and pick that up with your toes. Sometimes in the morning, the muscle in my foot starts to fatigue and trembles a little just when I'm trying to hold a glide steady. Feet benefit from exercise as much as the rest of us.
Bruce 04-27-2007, 05:58 AM Tanked up with the FI cleaner and some cheap gas right after work last night. I think I barely hit 550 miles, but I haven't made the log entry yet. Unfortunately, I forgot to register the fill with the SG until I was a few miles down the road...so I'll need to remember that I'm roughly .1 gallon short this tank.
Lots of traffic at the station (apparently, $2.739 is cheap these days) so I only managed 39 MPG for the ride home.
Pouring rain and 47°F this morning, but speeds were slower on the expressway so my aero losses were limited somewhat. 42 MPG for 15.4 miles, no wind.
My interfacility trip this morning will not be a good start to the tank...I'm expecting low 40s.
The flooding from the earlier rains has already closed some local tertiary roads, and this rain may start to affect some of the secondaries.

Oh man, am I salivating to get that CoastalTech package. It should arrive Monday. I watched warmup closely today to see if maybe there might be a downside later on in the commute after using the EV switch for that first downhill. Don't think there will be, as I will be in stage 3b and still able to "work".
Also, it may be a perfect solution for the worst part of my commute.....crossing the river and meandering through 7 blocks of downtown traffic.
My new religion may be "pack management". Extended glides may have to take a bit of a backseat in order to protect those bars.
Let's fill 'er up after the highway trip, install that sucker, and shoot for 75.......:bananapowerslide:
ericbecky 04-27-2007, 09:37 AM 94.4 mpg coming in to work today. No wind.
I just filled up yesterday. Best tank ever - 81.1 mpg for 728 miles.
I filled up earlier than usual. There were still 3 bars left on the gauge. Usually I wait until there are no bars on the gauge. ~9 gallons this fill up instead of the usual 10+ gallons
efusco 04-27-2007, 10:35 AM We had one cold day (hopefully the last until Fall) yesterday, but i still managed to get home from work with 93 miles on the tank and showing 68.0mpg. Surely something will come along to sabatage my potential for a 70mpg tank...it always does since the better the mileage the longer the tank lasts and the more likely I end up on the highway or interstate and the mileage takes a dive.
Bruce 04-27-2007, 12:52 PM Interfacility travel in the rain: 45 MPG on the way down, 44.5 on the way back. Tank's at 44.1 with around 11 gallons left.
I pulled a 65 to 15 MPH D-FAS at my exit and watched the trip FE climb from 44 to 44.9MPG after 30+ miles. :D
Right Lane Cruiser 04-27-2007, 05:27 PM So much for the +50mpg run... :(
Getting close, folks. I'm getting married tomorrow and today has been really REALLY hectic.
Drove my mother around on several of these. One of the trips I had her and my two sisters as well. Interesting, I got a little pay back as though it took more gas to accelerate the added mass helped out with glide times as well.
1) 42.5mpg for 10.8mi (Home to Jared's)
2) 41.3mpg for 4.4mi (Jared's to Wendy's to meet my folks)
3) 43.1mpg for 10.8mi (Wendy's to my house with my mother in the car)
4) 49.1mpg for 18.1mi (Home to the hotel where my folks are staying with mother still in the car)
5) 44.9mpg for 16.3mi (Hotel to Rosedale to pick up the tux with mother and 2 sisters)
6) 47.4mpg for 12.6mi (Rosedale to the barber's for a haircut -- just me but bad traffic)
7) 47.2mpg for 15.8mi (Barber's to Michaels for another pew bow clip -- more bad traffic)
8) 44.7mpg for 1.4mi (Michaels to home -- too short for anything better)
Temp right now is 73F.
Tank is at just below half -- 46.9mpg for 341.2mi so far. :D
JimboK 04-27-2007, 08:07 PM Congratulations, Sean! On the wedding, that is. You know, you would be forgiven if you paid a little less attention to your mileage today. :)
diamondlarry 04-27-2007, 08:30 PM Congratulations Sean! I hope all goes well for you and your new wife tomorrow. I think it's probably ok for you to reduce your level of concentration on FE tomorrow as well.:D
My day was pretty much average for me.
1) 55.0-5.8 miles
2) 52.8-9.6
3) 53.8-9.6
4) 53.6-6.3
I don't have an average for the whole day. It was raining today and I didn't go out at lunch to move the car so the SG sat long enough to start a new day. This morning's average was 53.5 and the afternoon average was 54.3.
psyshack 04-27-2007, 09:21 PM I guess I'm having my hypermiling male menopause week. I just cant get into my groove. Its either the car doesn't want to do a 50 mpg segment when it should be the real deal. Or its me and the car is willing. The tank has dropped down to 46 mpg with 450 miles at just under a half by gauge. I should be able to salvage it if I can just get back into my groove. I know part of it is Ive put the OEM fresh air intake back on. Some of the mornings have been coolish this week. So thats hurt. and the one day I had good temps and winds for the drive home, the Civic just didnt want to play. I guess that frustrated me. And that had me thinking of the nightmare this winter concerning the ECU.
I haven't had a true road rage moment in quite a while. But today there was one. A young man in a teg flipped me off and lipped FO while I was setting at a Starbucks waiting for traffic to clear and pull out on Harvard Ave! After this morning's panic and ordeal concerning a daughter of mine. I was in no mode what so ever! I reacted ,,, he freaked! A cop saw it. I got a FI and he went to jail for a used bong. Neither of us got a road rage ticket. I gave the cop my conceal and carry permit with my lic. and insurance. He thanked me for not over reacting. :) And the weapon was secured and then given back to me before I left.
The high point of the week was I received my cleanmpg.com lic. plate frame today. :) I will put it on this weekend and post a pic. Maybe it will help me get back in my groove.
OOOO today was good for 42 mpg :( Im glad my wife was with me today. I can be such a a-hole at times its not funny. But I almost maintain around her. I whine about how she drives and beats up cars and such. But just one look at her and I throttle back just enough to not ruin things. Bless her heart.
psy
sorry about the ramble
Hi Sean:
___Congratulations … I hope ;) AND I have to agree with what Jim said, it’s your weeding weekend. I think we can all forgive you for a few missteps given you are running a million miles a second trying to keep up with all the wedding plans. Have a great weekend and an even better honeymoon!
___Psy, sounds like you got a little lucky and your wife is indeed a sweetheart.
___46 - 50 degree temps and a 0 - 5 mph side/tailwind w/ intermediate heavy Friday night traffic. 53.3 into the parking lot.
___Good Luck
___Wayne
Right Lane Cruiser 04-27-2007, 11:47 PM Thanks, guys! It is tough to keep up the high numbers on the tank when I'm driving routes I've not optimized... and I'm so blitzed I can't remember what happened to me 5 minutes ago. I'm just elated that I've proven multiple times that the car is capable of +50mpg numbers -- just one week after getting the ScanGauge, too!
I've got one trip tomorrow morning to the reception hotel so I'll squeeze that one while trying to forget the stresses of the day (believe or not, driving is one of my stress relievers -- even when I'm pushing for higher mileage ;) ), then a drive home the next day. After that... nothing for two weeks while I'm in Europe for the honeymoon. :D
I won't be posting for a while... ;)
Thank you all for your support, tips, and well wishes! Here's hoping I make it through the big day tomorrow without mishap.
tarabell 04-27-2007, 11:49 PM My warmest congratulations Sean, and my best wishes for a long and happy life together!
:Banane35:
PapaMile 04-28-2007, 12:56 PM I have been fighting a computer virus all the week. So I was quiet here. However, My tank fill of yesterday morning gave me a 48.58mpg (4.85l/100km) for (760Km) 472 Miles. That's by best so far.
Pierre
Hi All:
___I bet Sean is glad half of the first day of a million more is coming to an end about now ;)
___66 – 70 degrees and a 10 – 15 mph side wind. Slept in the parking lot after work this morning before my trek which helped temp wise but traffic was tough. A ton of people on the Chicago Interstates today including 3 or 4 Prius’ doing 65 +. If only those Prius drivers knew what they were throwing away :( 53.4 into the drive.
___Good Luck
___Wayne
diamondlarry 04-28-2007, 09:47 PM I had the perfect combination for FE today: great temps(65-68F), no time constraints, and light traffic.:D Today's numbers:
1) 62.3-5.7 miles(because of the no time constraints I didn't have the EBH plugged in)
2) 59.2-8.8
3) 66.7-12.7
4) 62.1-9.2
Average for today: 62.6
Hi Larry:
___Hot d***! Let’s trade drives ;)
___53 - 60 degrees and 0 - 5 mph head winds. 55.7 into the lot. 790 miles out and still ¼ of a tank … Maybe another 54’er in the works?
___Good Luck

diamondlarry 04-29-2007, 06:10 AM Wayne, You ought to come down some Saturday and see what it's like to drive in Elkhart county IN. You may have to bring plenty of paper towels to wipe the drool off of the steering wheel though.:D
I'm a bit concerned for today's drive into church though. It's only 46F(weatherbug say's 45.6F):( but at least there is no significant wind.:)
CoasterToasterXB 04-29-2007, 11:55 AM 58 for 4.5 miles. My all time best segment. lots of coasting on this one. Up to the last block before my house it was actually at 60!
diamondlarry 04-29-2007, 12:03 PM I forgot to write down 2 of my segments but I got 70.7 on the way home from the gas station and had 56.6 for the day. I filled up with 5.866 gallons after 331 miles for 56.4 for the tank.
Hi All:
___69 - 75 degrees and a 5 - 10 mph side wind. 58.9 into the drive. Sun baked asphalt, day shift drives home, warmer temps and somewhat OK summer RFG w/ E10 are helping her back into the big leagues ;)
___Good Luck

locutus 04-29-2007, 03:32 PM Catch-up from friday:
70.4 / 7.0 miles / 57F getting caught by a lot of traffic & lights
65.6 / 8.9 miles / 52F
Some short trips in the much warmer weather today.
70.8 / 4.4 miles / 64F
68.9 / 2.4 miles / 81F
81.5 / 5.2 miles / 86F
69.0 / 5.2 miles / 84F
72.6 for 17.2 miles on the day, which is coincidentally right what the tank is at - 72.6 / 283 miles / 6 pips.
Bruce 04-29-2007, 06:26 PM 190 miles supporting a bike ride on Saturday, and a trip downtown today. All trips and the tank so far were around 43 MPG. I was surprised the trip downtown didn't take a serious hit from the city driving. Perhaps the last hill on Route 2 East gave quite a bit back...you can top it at 45, FAS, hit 65 on the way down and coast it out to 25-30 through decreasing speed limits, ending at a traffic signal.
Hi All:
___59 - 75 degrees F w/ 20 - 25 mph side/head winds and rain for ~ ½ the trip in tonight  The last 15 miles were after breaking through the back of the front with winds at 0, mist and only wet pavement. Saved the trip actually. 51.6 into the lot.
___Good Luck

JimboK 04-30-2007, 07:13 AM Catching up from the weekend ....
I had the cross-town commute Saturday, 80.1 MPG on the a.m. run. I had to run out to buy the gang lunch, and then made a couple of stops on the way home. Finished the day with 76.3 MPG.
Yesterday was a little off: 1.9 MPG. That was from moving her 50 feet in the driveway. I gave Prius her semi-annual Zaino treatment. :)
efusco 04-30-2007, 07:45 AM I don't do a lot of this daily grind weekly report stuff....but thought I'd give a "where I stand" report.
208 miles into this tank MPG shows 69.9mpg. Still got the upper grill block on, lower is removed. A LOT of rain forecast for the remainder of the week so that MGP will likely go down.
PaleMelanesian 04-30-2007, 08:13 AM We had a neighborhood joint garage sale Saturday. I went out and put up signs on all the street corners. At then end of the day, I went out and picked them all up. About 20 miles of neighborhood streets with stops and starts everywhere, not to mention shutting down for each sign.
Managed to pull 40mpg total over both of those segments. :) That pulled my tank down from 50 to 49.5.
Skwyre7 04-30-2007, 02:17 PM The wife and I took a trip up into the mountains this weekend. We stayed at a little B&B in Lexington, VA. Not only is Lexington about 1000' higher than Richmond, we had to cross two mountains! My tank went from 58.9 MPG to 54.1 MPG. The return trip brought it back up to 56.1 MPG. Not a good trip for FE, but a good trip for relaxation, which was the main reason for going.
Note: For previous weeks, look here, and for later weeks, look here.
Dan's much belated data dump.
