Just thought it was a bit mind blowing.

ksstathead 02-07-2012, 01:03 PM Way cool! Thanks, Kirk.
Go find your local astronomy club and visit one of their public star parties.. prepare to have your mind blown a bit more.
FXSTi 02-07-2012, 05:28 PM I can't do that, I'm afraid of heights.:eek::p

ItsNotAboutTheMoney 02-07-2012, 05:38 PM Thanks for link, it was very interesting.
SentraSE-R 02-07-2012, 07:37 PM My hobby is astronomy, so I know all that. It's a great link. Thanks.
Right Lane Cruiser 02-08-2012, 07:57 AM Did you zoom the other way, Darrell?
PaleMelanesian 02-08-2012, 08:09 AM It's amazing that even with all the kilo, giga, micro and nano extensions, we still run out at the small end of the scale. 0.00000000001 yoctometers? :eek: At the big end we start using bigger measures like light years and parsecs.
Wow, just amazing - thanks! :cool:
SentraSE-R 02-08-2012, 12:33 PM Did you zoom the other way, Darrell?
No, I didn't, Sean. I wasn't aware I could. Thanks!
FXSTi 02-08-2012, 04:46 PM I was showing this to my daughter and realized that each picture is click-able for more information too.

Here is an image of the Orion Nebula complex that I took back in 2000, a composite of 8 30 minute exposures on slide film. This is a naked eye object on a dark clear night.

FXSTi 02-08-2012, 08:45 PM Wow Herm, that is beautiful.
Kirk
Thanks Kirk, and the hard part is that it was done with film.. That is the fuzzyness you see around the sword of Orion, if you have good eyes and a dark night.. easily seen with binoculars.
jcp123 02-08-2012, 11:51 PM Herm, beautiful! Space has no equals for its beauty. My own current desktop wallpaper is of the Carina Nebula :)
My wife and I are both sci-fi nerds - she with Stargate, myself with Star Wars, and the both of us grew up on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Voyager. We record BBC re-runs of The Next Generation on our DVR :D. Needless to say, science, astronomy and physics intrigue us both. We just bought a little 100x telescope, hope to have some good photos someday - my sister-in-law and her husband have a similar telescope and recently shared some neat photos through it via facebook. We also always love to go to the planetarium. The local community college recently renovated theirs, we are waiting with baited breath to go see a show there. As many times as we hear these things, it's always in some way incomprehensible to imagine the vast scale of the universe, or even just our own solar system.
