Thought y'all might find this intriguing -- an oil company trying to sell less of their product:

Check out "driving a hybrid" -- they suggest the tried and true but not mainstream techniques of DWL and P&G.

You probably won't find Exxon Mobil giving that advice ;)

They may actually be trying to keep you buying the same amount of fuel. If prices get too high, people might cut back on the driving they do and Shell may not want that.

They also don't want you to buy efficient cars. Because once the car is on the road that is money lost in gas sales they will never recover.

Hi Tom:

___Heaven forbid they (Chevron) should allow a battery company (Ovonics) to fully develop their products (NiMH’s) so an EV would not have to use any fuel or lubricant at all?

___Bruce, Shell was one of the first oil companies to publicly recognize Global warming as well as sponsoring many fuel efficient challenges and engineering designs including the Michelin Bibendum and Shell Eco-Marathons. They also manufacture the synthetic Biomass derived Biodiesel for the Audi R10 TDI …

LONDON, April 4, 2006 -- After 78 days and 18,467 miles, John and Helen Taylor have set a Guinness World Record for Fuel Efficiency after successfully driving around the globe using only 24.4 tanks of Shell gasoline and averaging an impressive 52.1 miles per gallon.

___There isn’t a hypermiler here that could not eat these two and that TDI alive for that record ;)

The diesel-engined R10 - which will run on conventional derv in 2007 - will in future use a Shell-supplied Biomass to Liquid (BTL) fuel, synthesised from renewable plant sources. Audi says that since the plants needed to make the fuel absorb carbon dioxide, the R10 will effectively be carbon-neutral.

Actually, this is not the first time Shell has done something like this. During the "energy crisis" of the 1970's, they had the "Shell Answer-Man", who talked about FE in their TV-commercials, & you could get booklets with tips on how to improve your FE at their gas stations.

If memory serves, I think that was where I learned about what we here call "face-out" parking :)

(I still remember the outcry when gasoline prices rose above 30 cents/gal, & a lot of people said things like, "When gas gets to 50 cents/gal, I'm going to quit driving!" ;) )

Wayne--

After the Insight Marathon last summer, are you ready for the Round-the-World challenge you refer to above? Let's see, 18,467 miles / 150 mpg = about ten tanks in an Insight, right? On the other hand, 18,467 miles at the Insight Marathon's 18-mph average -- well, I would like to be the first to decline an invitation to participate. I can't take that much vacation... --RN

Hi HCHCIN:

___If I could get the time off (PAID of course), I would take a stab at it. I don’t think I would bother messing around with a sub 20 mph pace however ;)

___Good Luck
