Here we go again when you have total idiots all through government running your town you get news stories like this. BTW only my county out of 67 in the state of Pennsylvania has to go through a reassessment. Funny there are counties circling Allegheny that haven't had a property reassessment in decades.
The $287K parking space :(
BTW Property Taxes on that space would be over $10,000 per year.
KDKA story and video on the $287K parking space. (http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2011/12/30/mt-washington-parking-space-assessed-at-nearly-300000/)

Al, one party rule for so long has really screwed up Pittsburgh and Allegheny county. Considering what Fitzgerald just pulled, i don't see that getting any better.
What this state NEEDS is to get rid of the hideous, unfair, and anti american property tax and replace it with a revenue neutral graduated income and some type of consumption tax. Everyone needs to contribute, to do otherwise is unfair.
If anyone is under the illusion that you own your home, stop paying the property tax and see what happens.

I saw stuff similar to this when I was helping my great aunt sell her house in Wilkes-Barre in the late 90's. Her house (a 3 bedroom rambler with one bath) on a double city lot with a detached 2 car garage had over double the taxes that my parents paid on their 5 bedroom colonial on 5.5 acres outside of DC in Virginia. Pennsylvania's problem is that they taxed all of their industry to the point where the industry moved elsewhere. With the industry went the jobs. When the jobs left, the young people left. Now the state and local gov'ts have to find the money to operate by assessing property mostly owned by retired people on social security and pensions.

Government has a tendency to screw up, from what I've observed. That seems to be its natural state.
