Few can compete with a turbo diesel powered Ford ECOnetic!

Ford offered to make Christmas greener with a concept sleigh that would dramatically reduce Santa’s carbon footprint.

Santa’s new ride, packed with cutting-edge Ford technology, would allow Rudolph and friends to enjoy a well-deserved respite if not outright retirement while Santa makes his annual deliveries with style in an environmentally friendly new sleigh.

According to Ford’s calculations, Santa’s team of nine reindeer emits 214,670 tons of CO2 so something had to be done to reduce, reuse and recycle.

The benefits of switching to the ECOnetic powered concept sleigh mean saving not only emissions but also big $’s! Travelling almost 125 million miles, Santa currently spends in excess of $190 Million USD on carrots to fuel his reindeer each year. The impressive fuel efficiency of the 1.6L ECOnetic would reduce Santa’s fuel costs by over 90% to just $19 Million USD.

Mrs. Santa Claus:
“I am not looking forward to telling Donner and Blitzen the news, but the polar bears in the North Pole will certainly welcome the Ford ECOnetic powered sleigh. Delivering presents in a shorter amount of time to all the good children each year may even give Santa time to reconsider a few names on the naughty list.”
Innovative engineering means the new ECOnetic delivers performance to rival a traditional 1.6L gasoline powered engine but with significantly improved fuel efficiency at 62.8 mpgUS combined on the NEDC, approximately 51 mpgUS on our own EPA and CO2 emissions of just 95g/km.

The 1.6L ECOnetic delivers up to 104 HP and at least 162 lb-ft. of torque with short term overboost providing the most fuel efficient engine in Ford’s worldwide fleet.

The redesigned sleigh also incorporates other cutting edge Ford technologies including the following:
Ford Auto-Start-Stop system automatically shuts down the engine when the vehicle is at idle – at a traffic light and restarts the engine when the driver wants to move off, saving the fuel wasted while the vehicle is stationary.

Smart Regenerative Charging – The ECOnetic engine features an enhanced new version of this system, which increases the alternator output when the vehicle brakes or decelerates. This converts the kinetic energy of the vehicle into electric energy without having to use additional fuel. The ‘free’ electric current is used to recharge the battery, so that it can be used by the electrical systems at a later stage. An advanced battery management system continually monitors the charging status so that the regenerative charging feature can charge the battery in the optimal way.

Ford Eco Mode is a driver information system, which helps motorists to change their habits and adopt a more economical driving style, with potential fuel savings for many drivers of around 10 per cent. Sophisticated software – developed with the help of professional green driving tutors – monitors driving behaviour, and provides the driver with clear feedback about their eco-driving performance, along with simple tips about how to save more fuel. A simple flower graphic in the instrument cluster display allows drivers to track their progress in the three key areas of gear shifting, anticipation and speed.

Shift Indicator Light can be a major support for drivers prioritising economy. An indicator light, which is displayed in the instrument cluster, alerts drivers when they could reduce fuel consumption by shifting into a higher gear.
The Focus ECOnetic also features a number of other low-CO2 technologies which are standard items on most models in the new Focus line-up. These include:
Electric Power Assisted Steering
Low-friction engine and transmission oils
Low tension Front End Accessory Drive (FEAD)
Thermal Management Systems to optimize warm-up
The 1.6L ECOnetic Oil burner will help ensure the engine powering Santa’s sleigh is green, lean and mean.

Let's hope Santa doesn't try to bring his eco-diesel powered sleigh into U.S. airspace. The Imperial fighter jets will blast him to smithereens.

Hi Carcus:

He had temp EPA plates allowing for a 24-hour respite from the diesel NAZI's. Ford installed a CARB certified SCR CAT on the concept so he was good. The DEF tank was huge for last night’s activities however ;)

Santy Clause has the US covered too:

The muscle car-inspired, bright-red, concept sleigh is powered by a 1.0-liter EcoBoost
engine and boasts 125 horsepower, with 170Nm peak torque (with 200Nm overboost)--giving
it the highest power density of any Ford production engine to date.

Ford engineers apparently presented the concept sleigh design to Santa and Mrs. Claus,
along with its environmental and cost-saving advantages.
