Happy Patriot's Day...a beautiful marathon Monday to start the week. 56°F with wind-driven rain. The wind is amazing...I watched an uprooted bush blow across the parking lot while I was taking my stats.

The car wouldn't coast worth a darn with the head/side wind, and I was having to use more throttle on the expressway. The runners will be heading into it as well. In spite of it all, I managed segments of 30, 36 and 42 MPG for a 38.5 MPG result for my 15.4 miles. Tank's at 40.2 MPG for 435 miles, 2.2 gallons remaining.

I have a 70-mile trip this morning, so I'll probably fill up on the way back.

Strange morning. It's raining and blowing like mad and for some reason the ICE kept refusing to shut down. Not the first time I've heard of that happening in the rain but I can't imagine why. New tank is up to 54.2mpg @90mi, still working on that first pip.

Hi All:

___I feel for you guys out East right now. I hope the front clears out fast otherwise it will be a very tough and frustrating week for you all.

___0 - 10 mph tail wind, 31- 35 degrees F and 49.4 to show for the effort. 855 miles out with low fuel coming on about 30 miles back. Should touch 925 if I want to push it this afternoon … meaning for those in the Chicago area, if you see an Accord on the side of the road and guy walking down the Interstate heading North just ahead of it later on this afternoon, you know I came up a bit short :D

47 mpg, 40f, no wind.

Update:
Had to do some running around in Tulsa mid-morning. 50% city, 50% hwy. Was good for 46 mpg.

The drive home was not so good. With a head wind, only managed 44 mpg. Tank was at 45 mpg. :(

42ºF this morning and windy. I managed 58.9MPG on the way in to work. Hopefully I'll have a decent tailwind this afternoon, but the way my day is turning out, I doubt it. I'm having a serious case of the Mondays.

A morning interfacility trip...40.5 MPG going down, 49.5 with a nice tailwind on the way back...just feathering that throttle at 50-55 MPH. Filled up on the way back and came up with a 43.6 MPG tank, which is way better than the SG predicted (40.2). I gave the pump a few extra clicks to be sure, so it appears to be an honest fill. A pretty sweet tank, at least for me.

I unplugged the SG and it didn't reset, so I just adjusted it to a +0.3% fill and am planning to leave it there in the future.

Too bad I had so much left...I could've made 500 miles easy. C'est la vie.

My best guess between your ride and mine: I'm a little more hesititant go go from 55 to 45. I do have three significant climbs where faster speed would be justified.

Temps started at ~40F this morning and ended up at ~50F. It's pretty easy to see from the segments which ones had tail/side winds and which had head/side winds of 10-15 mph.
1) 49.0-5.8 miles
2) 54.7-9.6
3) 49.9-9.6
4) 56.3-6.3
Average for today: 52.1

64.7 MPG for the commute home. Could have been better, but it wasn't due to less than cooperative traffic, winds from the remnants of our nor'easter, and, frankly, less attention to driving than usual and more attention to the radio -- coverage of the Virginia Tech shootings.

Hi All:

___54 - 61 degrees F with 5 - 15 mph head winds. Traffic was trashed around O’Hare (construction again) as well as the Northbound Tri-State (I-94) from Lake Cook to Rt. 60 (it always is through that 5 - 7 mile stretch. Was sitting at 54.3 just before the O’Hare nightmare and she kept falling :( Pulled her back from a 51.9 low to 52.6 as I pulled into the Shell just down the road from home. With her 1.8 mpg negative offset in my favor, she allowed 50.1 for the tank. I am beginning to really like the days when we drive in the warmer temps :)

The SG averaged in my afternoon trip with this morning's, so I only captured the last 4 miles or so after stopping to pick up dinner...about 38.5 MPG. Tank's around 44. I had hoped the winds would help carry me home, but apparently not. As always, they're statistically less likely to help than hurt.

At the store, I backed into a spot next to an HCH...I noted a big sign taped across the top of the driver's airbag: "1. LIGHTS OFF? 2. ENGINE OFF? 3. KEYS OUT?"

Is this a user problem, or does the HCH make it easy to forget this stuff?

This morning At 56 mph, I did 34.9MPG for 24.8milles. Yes I have an Hybrid  ... in the rain and major upwind (gust 50mph).

Tonight, At 59mph, I made my best ride so far at 50mpg with the same gust but this time downwind. So if with a gust of 50mph in the ..., I do only 50mpg, I will never reach the 60mpg as I see everywhere in this site

Well I'm sure I got over 45mpg this morning to work. But that wasn't in my xB. Finally warm enough out to take the motorcycle out! I know it probably puts out more pollutants but it does have an integrated catylitic converter in the exhaust system so for a motorcycle that not modified I'm sure it's not bad. It is carburated though. Maybe I'll start hyper miling the Kawasaki ninja! Wonder if I can find epa ratings for it!

You guys are scary good!

I can't do exact measurements (yet!!) but throwing in my amateur attempts at FASing (had a couple last >30s), a bit of fumbling high speed pulse and glide and some NICE ON coasting (clutch pedal depressed -- should I be worrying about the throw-out bearing here?), I'm looking at what seems to be a very good tank!

Based purely on fuel gauge needle location and trip odometer reading, I believe I'm pulling right around 40 or so. :woot: I'm at about 202 right now and still over the 3/4 mark and the last time I was that high was 3 tanks ago with the 39mpg tank (which I think suffered on the last 1/4 due to passenger load and driving conditions). Too bad the fuel gauge isn't linear -- 800+ miles on a tank would be AWESOME.

Got the tire pressures up to 44 last night. Light wind at my back and relatively low speeds to work (about 3 mph or so slower than usual) due to lighter traffic. I got my once every two weeks honk this morning -- ironically I was accelerating faster than normal at the time!

Still on track for a good tank -- 225 and just below the 3/4 mark. Hoping to hit over 300 at the half mark...

75mpg or better at 55F.

Can't say for sure because on my Insight, occasionally the instant mpg will peg at 150 doing P&G, which it did for a mile or two.

Another funny thing: someone watched me do a high speed coast into the parking lot and asked why "I was on two wheels?" :D

My drive in this morning kind of stunk due to sustained but variable winds up to 75 or 85 MPH, with warnings of 100+ in isolated patterns. It will be even worse on the way home when I count on very limited drag for nearly 18.5 straight miles of pure DFCO and FAS.

The wind on the first big hill was a head wind and something totally silly happened...

I got stuck at light before the run to the crest of the hill along with not just 1 or 2 but *9* full-sized pickup trucks, 4 behind me and 5 in the left lane.

I did my usual light acceleration when we got the green but this apparently wasn't enough for the other folks because within a 1/2 mile of the light I had been passed by all 9 of them, tailpipes spewing visible emissions the whole time.

After a few minutes we crested this hill and began experiencing the full force of the high winds. While I noticed the increased drag and had to put about an extra 25% on the throttle to maintain the speed limit of 55 MPH in 5th gear I began to catch up to that line of pickup trucks.

Within another mile I had tooled my way to the head of the left lane column despite the noise from their engines under wide open throttle, the visible exhaust spewing from their tailpipes and that wonderful neolithic posture folks get when they hug their steering wheel and will their vehicle to go faster. The high wind was simply creaming their non-aerodynamic, square block profile vehicles while my Cd 0.29 Yaris was able to worm its way through without too much of a hassle.

I gave a little wave to the lead driver as I calmly and slowly moved a bit ahead of him just before the road closed down to one lane. :)

Hi Brian:

___75 - 100 mph winds? Holy smokes!!! I am surprised you even bothered driving through that nightmare scenario this morning. They shut down sections of the Interstates in the Midwest when the wind speed starts pushing into the high 40’s and I most certainly would not want to be driving through it either! I hope your trips over Mt. Rose in the future are a lot easier on both you and your Yaris …

I get that neolithic posture when I'm in a FAS at 18 MPH. :)

I'd definitely put money on a Yaris over a pickup at 130 MPH net airspeed. :)

Plenty of wind and rain, and lots of standing water to keep the tires cool, stiff and inefficient. 36 MPG for 15 miles at 41°F.

Wayne,

I've lived in a few parts of the country now and one thing that's held true no matter where I was is that people react to weather very differently according to their region.

In Colorado huge amounts of snowfall are so common that even on days where we had 2 feet of snowfall in a 24-hour period we still had school. North Texas shuts down when they get a dusting.

In Texas amazing electrical storms are so common that even the horses don't spook. In Reno the leading news story can be a thunderstorm.

In Reno hurricane force winds are so common that radio stations announce high profile vehicle prohibitions along with the local gossip. In Hawaii they call hurricane force winds by name.

Etc. :)

Anyway, my drive home was even worse than I anticipated. Not only were the 75MPH+ winds still going on but the temperature on Mount Rose had dropped below freezing and it was snowing above 6,500ft. despite no snow in the forecast The icing on the cake was having to deviate from one of my mile+ Fas sections to pick up a prescription for the wife.

I'm tellin' ya, the world was out to help me on my last tank but it's out to get me on this one.

There's a lot of that in Oklahoma...nothing out there to stop it.

I might've hit 41 if I hadn't pulsed into a green light that was red by the time I got there. :( Nobody was behind me, so it wasn't necessary, but I make bad decisions when I'm tired. Still on track for a great tank -- hit 282 this morning and I'm still over 3 needle widths over the half mark. Looks like I'm going to hit 300 without touching the half mark for the first time ever!! :woot:

I've been practicing FAS around my house (slow streets initially to get on my daily jaunt) with bump starts. I managed a nice smooth one on the way home yesterday at about 50mph, but all the rest have been too jerky for my tastes. I also got way more aggressive with NICE ON on the hills to work this morning -- they are mostly too small to FAS on but I use heavy DWL on them.

One of the biggest issues I have leaving work is that I have to almost immediately get on a steep ramp to the highway with a posted speed of 60. I usually get it up to about 50 or so as I'm merging and then work my way up to 55. There isn't usually enough time to warm the engine up before attacking that hill. :( There are some surface roads I can take over to a different ramp but there are lots of stop signs on the way there... Think I'll try that so I can at least get the engine warmed up under low load.

All this starting and stopping, gliding down the hills only to stop at the bottom, accelerating up the next hill from zero, nutjobs piling up behind me and freaking out because there's no place to go...enough! There has got to be a better way. I wouldn't enjoy this route even if fuel economy was my **last** priority.

Left it at 54.3mpg. Think I'll take one of my alternates home this afternoon.

A decent day today. The full time a.m. commute was 70.3 MPG. The commute home and a round trip to one of the part time sites tonight netted 78.2. (Don't have the individual segments. That's the daily MPG from the ScanGauge, which resets it during the almost 11 hours it sits in the lot during the day.)

Well, I got to my goal with a lot of effort on the way home today... Lots of traffic. I did take the stop sign route but then was in unfamiliar territory and it took me a while to get back to the highway.

Managed to squeeze 307 before the needle touched the half-way mark -- personal best there!

Got home and there was a BOX there! :D That box didn't stay in one piece very long... THANK YOU GARYG!

I plugged it in, got it set up and set about trying it out on the way to and from Church tonight... Got 44.1 mpg on the way down and 43.4 on the way back with the distance at 21.3 miles both ways :woot:

Still trying to decide what I want displayed for the 4 gauges, but I think I've settled for the TPS, MPH, MPG, and LOD...

Found out why I've been struggling to get over 40mpg on a tank, too. Looks like on a flat the best I can do at steady state in this car is 45mpg, though on even the slightest of descents I can nudge that to 50 (at about 47 mph). I'll have to keep playing with it because my route tonight really didn't have much that was flat and there was some wind in the mix...

Wayne -- how do you do it?? Battled two traffic jams and came out the other side with 50+mpg??? Do you have a higher steady state efficiency in your car? I know that Hyundai's aren't known for good fuel economy and I'm wondering just how much of a disadvantage I'm at with my car...

tbaleno
04-18-2007, 10:44 PM
On the flats, try to increase your top speed by 5mph and then bleeding off speed slowly to about 5mph or whatever you feel is good, then accelerate back up to speed and repeat. The bleeding will simulate going down that slight hill. It is kind of like pulse and glide. Use the Scangauge to find the optimal accelleration rate. You don't want to accelerate too slowly or to harshly.

Hi Psy:

___I don’t know what I would do with myself if I did not have any traffic to play in every #($ %#@( #@$)( $%(@!_$ day! And there you are punching out Hybrid like FE once again ;)

___Larry, you are going to have one heck of a summer, aren’t you :D

___Jim’s ho hum 70 + mpg tanks and its not even warm in VA. yet!

___Sean, when I received the SG-II, I installed it into the Accord and the numbers jumped 10 - 15% immediately with the superior feedback. The OEM NAVI and its basic FCD(s) is great for a steady state driver but I am anything but a steady state driver :( After a few tanks, I installed it into the Ranger and that thing shot itself out of a cannon. Her previous 2 best tanks were 41.x heading to and coming home from Florida with a load of relatives gear going one way and the return with another load of another relatives stuff coming back. That first tank w/ the SG-II installed was 45.x. The next was 47.x. In your case, you should see a similar jump as long as you take what the SG-II gives you to adjust your habits accordingly … I have to pass on a huge Kudo to Gary for sending his SG-I to you.

___In the case of my drive, it is so long that I can make up for the missteps of traffic or conditions with a more aggressive posture afterwards if needed. I set a target in my head before I leave given the temps and conditions. At various waypoints I check the real time progress and if I am behind my goal, I step it up a notch. If I am on top, I enjoy the ride. On warm days when I have a nice tail wind, I might decide to push just to see how far she can go. I missed a 67 mpg commute in her last fall on one of those days and I think she is worth a little more on the right day with the right traffic and the right mindset. Always a little more, just a little more :)

___This mornings drive home allowed a much more relaxed trip w/ no traffic to contend with. 39 - 42 degree F temps and a 5 - 10 mph head wind yielded a decent 49.2 into the drive …

___Good Luck

I, OTOH, have routes where I can avoid most traffic and consistently do as much as I can find every day to increase FE, but I'm limited a lot by the short length and warm-up hit.

33 MPG for the ride home with shopping in heavy traffic last night, then 40.8 for 18 miles on back roads with a warm engine. 41.8 this morning for 15.4 miles in the 40s F, light drizzle.

With the warmer temperatures, the throttle position is getting low enough on one of the slight downhills on the expressway that I may add another FAS there.

tbaleno -- Thanks for the tip! I'll give it a shot on the way home today but I think I might already have seen something like what you are describing on the way in this morning. :)

Wayne -- You must have a nice long commute! It seems my car might be a bit better than what I was thinking last night... I saw some segments where I was able to maintain 48+ on what appeared to be flats. Also discovered I can do about 60mpg if I stick around 37mph or so. Now I just have to figure out how to emulate your "anything but a steady state" driving!!

The trek in to work today was not bad, but I saw room for improvement in a few areas. I netted 43.8mpg over 25.6 miles at 36F :woot: Looks like a +40mpg tank is right around the corner! I'm up to 375miles with some tank left above the 1/4 mark.

___Just like yesterday, the usual 12 miles of Chicagoland construction nightmares on a day that should have been a lot better  51 - 59 degree F temps and a 10 mph tailwind yielded a 51.3 mpg into the parking lot … With the 53 actual and the 50 + after 50 + segments, she might allow the best tank of the year with the great temps heading into Chicago this weekend :)

Safely on the ground in beautiful Columbia. It's 75F and sunny with the smell of freshly cut grass wafting through my open hotel window. Of course I had to stop in and say howdy because, frankly, I just burned a ton of fuel to get here! At some point I'm going to have to figure out what the burn rate is on these Canadair Regional Jets that US Air has been flying me on all day. They **were** pretty full if that's worth anything.

Another day of huge winds yesterday, and I was just hosed. Of course it was a head wind again and this time I had nobody on the freeway to hide behind. Just a huge empty lane in front of me, and I can only squeeze out 60mpg for the day.

I’m noticing recently the freeways seem strangely empty. Is it because people are driving less, or because the spring breaks-Easter vacations are spread all over March and April? I’m becoming more convinced that light to medium traffic is much better for mileage than zero traffic. You have the sheltering effect of other cars around you, plus in the far right lane you have the built-in pulse and glide effect as cars merge in and exit out. So that lane of cars can be like a slowly expanding and contracting spring. Under ideal conditions (for me) that spring ranges between 25 and 55mph, with few complete stops.

But as I said lately I’m not seeing much of that effect, this morning there were a lot of drivers on my back or just blowing by me like bats out of hell. And it's colder, like 51F. So I was very happy to get 64mpg and I just hope it doesn’t sink back down again on the way home again.

Hi everybody,

This morning, wind 020(heading) @ 12knots, 53F
MPG Miles
36.8 : 2.8
49.5 : 22.1

47.7 : 24.9
I am actually happy. I had a full upwind. A funny thing appened this morning. I was following a truck at 55MPH. After maybe 4 miles, the truckers become very upset to see me there. He reduced his speed as low as 31MPH. I was not bussy, so I continued to follow him during another 2 miles. Finally, he flashed to go on the sideway so I passed beside him. The trucker returned to the WH and finally, he followed me at 55MPH. Drafting behind a truck is not something new. I don't understant his behavior. Anyways.

Tonight, wind 030 @ 14knots, 60F
MPG Miles
53.9 : 23.4
52.8 : 1.7

53.9 : 25.2
With a almost a full downwind.

The weather forecast is very good for the next week. I will likely make my first tank at 50MPG or higher.

60°F and finally dry this afternoon. I took off the removable portion of the grill block and was noticing considerably less loss in speed during my glides. Unfortunately, this means glides to a stop or set speed need to be started at lower speeds than at colder temperatures, which is more likely to be a nuisance for those following me.

Had to take the Worcester Turnpike home again tonight to get to an appointment, with the corresponding pulse and crawl/FE hit. 36 by the appointment, but I managed to bump it up to 37.x by the time I got home on more familiar roads. Tank's just under 40 MPG with the gage right at the 3/4 mark.

I have some interfacility travel scheduled for tomorrow, which should bump up the average a bit. I can go anytime, so perhaps I should put it off until the afternoon to bump up FE with the warmer temps. It should be around 60 tomorrow, so I'm hoping for around 45-47 MPG for the 70 miles.

3) 56.1-9.6(wife's work)
4) 58.8-6.3(home)

Break through!

Guys, I think I'm starting to get the hang of this pulse and glide thing. :D

1) 40.0mpg for 19.7mi (Work to Church -- terrible traffic)
2) 33.2mpg for 1.5mi (Church to Baker's Square for dinner)
3) 48.7mpg for 21.6mi (Baker's Square to Pep Boys for headlights) :bananajump: :Banane09:
4) 33.2mpg for 1.3mi (Pep Boys to home)

That nets me 43.2mpg for today!! Temp was 63F.

The #3 segment was the same route I took home last night -- did a bit of FASing but mostly pulse and glide with NICE ON between 60 and 45mph at a fairly aggressive 56LOD or so (at least that FELT aggressive to me!!). I actually had it up at 48.9mpg for a bit but had to stop on the off ramp and then do slow speed to Pep Boys.

On a side note, does anyone else's car eat headlights on a regular basis? I've had to replace mine every 8-9mo since I bought it...

Hi Akxb:

___If I didn’t know any better, I would say you live closer to Chicago then the North pole given the temps you are receiving this week!

___Tim, great to hear that you are on the ground and in the hunt … For a house that is ;) Make sure your first priority in terms of its location is the ability to hypermile from home to work and back :D

___Tarabell, 50 degree temps, strong head winds, highway drive and you pull in with a 60 + mpg segment? Nice!

___Pierre, you are starting to get the hang of it.

___Bruce, don’t give up, it will come.

___Larry, 55? ****!

___Right Lane Cruiser, great job yesterday and now that you have had a taste, it is time to start linking them together. I can see you have the scent so keep working that Elantra and you will have expert in the bag!

___Psy, head/side winds seem to affect your Civic more then the Accord. Is that how you see it too?

___Jared and Marc, those 100 mpg segments show you two are out of control :D

___39 - 46 degrees with 5 mph head winds tonight. 2 overnight road work sections brought traffic down into the 10 - 30 mph range for maybe 5 miles total which botched some of what she was capable of (I see all the Prius drivers just about drooling on themselves for that 10 - 30 mph highway section ;)) tonight but not to bad … 48.0 into the drive.

Yes Sir. The wind is not good for the Civic.

I almost always get lower numbers for the drive home. The powers to be saw fit to repave part of hwy 75 south with some very course asphalt in one area that was important to the number. Also in the evening, there is almost always the southern breeze or wind. It rarely blows in the morning.

I bet Ive put less than 25 miles on the Accord in the last 3 months. I hardly ever drive it anymore. Ive driven duh Ranger more than the Accord in the last 6 months. But we wont speak of the Rangers God awful mpg. Less I put it out of its misery. ( still have my brick ) :)

The second segment was crawling with cops taking pictures this morning, usually at the bottom of hills and I normally DWL over the speed limit to keep the TCC locked...so I had to cool it this morning. I managed to add another FAS on the last segment, but it was compensated for by an ill-timed light. Segments of 32/37/47 MPG for 41.5 MPG at 36°F for 15.4 miles.

The engine's been needing 4 instead of 3 revs to catch in the afternoons lately, so I may try a brand of gas with higher detergent content like Shell or Mobil on the next tank to see if that helps. Even if it's a 10c/gallon premium over the cheap stuff I normally use (ie. Gulf, Getty, Hess), that's still cheaper than a bottle of fuel injector cleaner for a 12-gallon fill. If it helps, I'd probably start using it every 2-4 tanks or so.

Hi Akxb:

___If I didn’t know any better, I would say you live closer to Chicago then the North pole given the temps you are receiving this week!

Temps came down a little last couple days. Only getting up to low to mid forties with all the cloud cover. It's still getting below freezing overnight. When the sun comes out though it warms up quick. We get allot of solar energy in the summer once we get long summer days of almost 20+ hours of light! I think we're up to 15hours of day light already now!

No reports today though, drove the motorcycle, it was 32F when I left and it's currently still only 38F. Thankfully the road are dry. Oh and I found out my bike has an integrated catalytic converter! So it's probably not as bad as I thought for pollution. ;)

I drove a Yaris Sedan today while my Prius was getting it's 60k service. It's a pretty nice little car. I drove it like, well let's just say I didn't drive it conservatively. No jack rabbit starts or hard stops at lights. I did FAS coming into red lights though. But for the most part, I drove 5mph over the speed limit with the A/C on. I drove it 37 miles and filled it up with 0.88 gallons of gas. That makes for a daily total of 42MPG! My driving was about 80% highway too! EPA for this is 34/39 (it was an automatic). Does that make me a hypermiler for today?

Cross-town part-time commute today. Frankly, I didn't look at the overall daily figure, but it was probably pretty good. The morning commute was disappointing at about 72 MPG, temps in the 40s. Disappointing because I've hit 80 in the recent past on the weekends in weather like this.

First, the car started out colder than normal. The initial block heater-induced temp was typical at about 130F, but after the thermos dump it dropped down into the 60s. It's never come close to that since the EBH install -- usually about 100 or so. Same cool down time overnight, same everything. Any of you Prius owners ever see anything like that?

To continue: Then the commute was more like a weekday than a weekend with light timing and traffic. The trip home was pretty good, with a short errand stop along the way. The segment before the stop, about 4 miles, was about 60 MPG. Afterward, 84.9 MPG, 24 miles, temps in the mid-70s.

Yay, even though I filled up recently, this tank will actually help my lifetime MPG, not pull it down farther! Yay!

All week is supposed to be 70's and then 60's. Whoo!!!

Also rather surprisingly, gas prices have dropped this week. Saw it for almost a dime cheaper than when I filled up last weekend; darn, I should've only gotten a few bucks and hoped prices fell instead of filling up. (It was the cheapest station by 5 cents at the time.)

I had an awesome day today! I drove up to Tom's this morning and from there, he let me drive his car up to the Oak Creek meeting. On the way to Tom's, my car got 56.7 over 127 miles. From Tom's to the meet I was able to push his car to 68.1. On the way back from the meet, into the headwinds that were in the far-norther IL/Chicago area, I managed 63.9 in the HCH. From Tom's to home, I hit stop and crawl almost imediately after getting on to I94 and it lasted, except for one stretch of about 2 miles, all the way to where I94 and I57 split off. In fact, I actually missed my turn and got onto I57 and had to get back on course at Halsted. Anyway, after that, I found a car carrier that had one Escalade right on the back and he was travelling 48-51 mph so I did a bit of drafting for the next 10-15 miles. By the time I got back to my regular gas station the SG was reading 57.1. Now here is where things get scary-good. When I filled up, I had travelled 260 miles and, after practicaly jumping up and down on the bumper, I was only able to squeeze in 4.13 gallons for a new personal best of 62.95 mpg :woot:

___Rich, I smell some mid-30’s coming up. Now go press up those Conti-Trak’s ;)

___10 mph tail wind in 56 - 60 degree temps. Had a 53.6 locked in until we hit O’Hare’s 1-lane, 2.5 mile, night time/weekend road work nightmare which pulled her all the way back to 51.5. Oh did I fight that last 20 miles to get that back. Pulled into the drive at 53.8. If the weather cooperates tomorrow night (expected T-Storms :(), she should allow an 07 best 52.5? SG-II shows 50.2 currently.

Hi All:

___Great temps of 74 - 82 degrees F but what started out as a 15 mph headwind turned into a 25 + mph headwind w/ higher gusts by the time I got to work. Talk about being out of synch. Strong headwinds during the early afternoon on the way in all week and light tailwinds heading home after midnight. And tonight for the drive home? T-Storms, rain, winds from all directions. To top it ff, I found my left rear at just 13.5 #’s this morning

___I touched 49 before I had pulled onto the Interstate. Never could quite hold onto that … 48.2 into the parking lot w/ a 51 mph average :(

Beautiful day today, WARM but windy. Made a route adjustment on my first segment that I think resulted in at least +10 MPG!! Hard to tell because of course warmer temps affected it. Basically instead of going down a relatively steep hill to a stoplight and a turn, I add one more stop but get a half-mile unimpeded glide and a more gradual downhill. :woot:

80.2 / 4.4 miles / 68F
88.9 / 7.0 miles / 82F
69.5 / 5.3 miles / 82F

Today's average was 79.6 / 16.7 miles.

The tank is at 73.3 / 176 miles / 9 pips.

Still trying to get back to the level I had 3 days ago on the way back from Church, but had a lot of rain to contend with... The way down was a little better than last time.

1) 44.8mpg for 20.8mi (Home to Church)
2) 34.9mpg for 2.0mi (Church to Culvers for lunch)
3) 45.7mpg for 22.4mi (Culvers to home)

Wayne, I'd love to break out my bike for the short stuff but I can only go about 34mph in top gear on a flat and I've got hills with +40mph limits on them... But I think I'm still on track for the best tank I've ever pulled! 480mi and still most of a quarter tank left. :D

Say, question for you guys about the configuration of tank size on the ScanGauge... I've got a 14.5 gallon tank but the ScanGauge only takes to the nearest full gallon. I've got it set at 14 right now... is that reasonable or should I set it up at 15 instead?

I just love those types of little discoveries. :) I had one today too, although I can't yet pin down how....haha. But SGII was a bit better than I usually expect on a certain segment.

Tank up 2 points to 73.3 / 344 miles / 5 pips after a morning trip with the boy to IHOP while the momma slept in.

The wifey mentioned that getting good mileage in her Toyota Highlander is not fun because she doesn't have any instrumentation toys. So after this tank I'm taking it out of the Prius and putting it into the Highlander (she agreed). It'll be fun to see if the numbers motivate her to go to work; she is a left-brained programmer like me, after all. Heck, maybe I'll drive it and start learning all of the techniques you gas-powered folks use.

Wayne - more SGII / Prius numbers, if you still need them:

The tank MPG is much more accurate this time, after my adjustment. It currently reads 72.3.....1.0 lower, and it has consistently been 1.0 lower the entire tank.

Segment MPG comparisons, however, have become annoyingly inconsistent. I've been occasionally tracking SGII vs. calculated commutes in, commutes out, and "today" statistics, and it is hard to pin down anything reliable or consistent.

Sometimes SGII is a couple mpgs higher than calculated, sometimes a couple mpgs lower, sometimes right on the money. Earlier, I thought they were consistently lower by a few mpgs, but that's not always the case. As a general rule, they now seem to be anywhere between 3-4% too high OR too low.

I'm gonna start tracking these numbers religiously in order to have a lot of data, if for no other reason than my own understanding & peace of mind :)

Hi Jered:

___I love to find those hidden gems every once in a while myself :)

___Right Lane, I know 50 is just around the corner now. Great job! I have a 17.2 gal tank that holds ~ 19.6 gallons. I set her up for 19 and input the actual fill like always. It still calc’s the tank off your input but it will let you know when you are really close to MT if you have a .6 gallon underage (.5 in your case) ;)

___Marc, I most certainly want the SG-II tank numbers given the Insight and HCH-I’s lean-burn ruins the FE data but the Prius’ input is very valuable to me.

Wayne, I don't think Marc so much lit a fire, but he and locutus have certainly inspired me.

The Prius has sat in the driveway after getting its 85.9 MPG yesterday. Finally, spring has sprung. M'lady and I have taken advantage of it on the new (old) motorcyle. First fillup on that was at 113 miles, 1.755 gallons, which calculates to 64.4 MPG. I've been calling the bike my gas guzzler, but if this result turns out to be typical, she might give Prius a run for her money. I've really not done anything out of the ordinary driving it -- just taking it easy. And that's been more out of an abundance of caution, rather than a deliberate attempt to maximize FE, after not having ridden a motorcycle regularly for 30 years.

Ahhh! Went out today, lovely weather 74, a bit windy though. Still, warm, sunny, so nice. I practically felt naked not having a coat on, and wearing shorts!

Anyway, up to 37.4 MPG when I came back home after running some errands. That's more like it!

Took a trip to Chicago area after making some work stops in Milwaukee, all in the Insight.
Totals for Friday thru Sunday - 331 miles, 83.6 MPG on 90% freeway driving. Weather was warm, had nice strong tailwind to end the trip. Am starting to feel comfortable in more driving conditions. This is a great car!

Only 44 mpg for the drive in this morning. We were running late. Yes we. The wife and I came in together in the Civic. She baited me with Starbucks after work. So i bit. Then just as we were leaving we got a call from one of our daugthers. She thought she had a truck loose its wheel and tear her car up on her drive into Tulsa. so we had to stop by her place and get her a change of cloths. Shes very goosey. So her body reacted in a none standard way when it happened. Wife and I tore up the hwy to aid her. Got there and he had just blown a tire. Then on to the wifes place of work then mine. Still made it to the office on time. But it cost me mpg. :(
