How the heck did they start the car if they're not able to drive a stick? I say there is something fishy about this story.

Perhaps they stepped on the clutch pedal thinking it was the brake?

I think the car was already running, so they didn't have to start it.
On an episode of "Bait Car" aired earlier this year, the Atlanta Police left a car in a parking lot - idling and door open - waiting for the thief to get in and drive off. The car was a stick. And the thief couldn't drive a stick. Since the bait car has cameras and audio, you could hear the kid trying to move the lever forward/backward, trying to figure out how to get to 'drive'.
