2006 HCH-II.

Q: We have a 2006 Honda Civic hybrid with carpool stickers. But the mileage is disappointing, in the 33-38 mpg range. This is whether I am driving or my husband, and although highway driving is a bit better, it comes nowhere near the 49-51 mpg sticker average.

I know that was inflated, but I had hoped to be getting in the low to mid-40s consistently. I have taken the car to Honda, and they just tell me that 49-51 aren't their numbers (although they were happy to tout them to get me to buy the car), and that they have no numbers to give me. They said it could be that I was running the air conditioning (I reminded them it was winter) and because of the new gas blend (I keep mileage records, and this has been an issue since we got the car). They checked the computer and said nothing was wrong and seemed to want me to just go away, which is not OK with me. We sold my wonderful 1996 Civic, which got almost the same mileage, to make this purchase. And while I am happy to do it for the environment, the car is not living up to our expectations. Can you ask other Civic hybrid drivers what their experiences are and what mileage they get?

Beth Mostovoy
Redwood City

A: Will do. When new federal mileage ratings come out for 2008 models, expect all estimates to fall for hybrids and gas-only vehicles.

Q: I wrote to you seven years ago about the chances that hybrids might be allowed in carpool lanes. You replied - rather snidely, I might add - that if politicians allowed that, our carpool lanes would be filled. I was overjoyed our politicians had more foresight than you when they allowed 85,000 hybrid owners to get carpool stickers. Six years later and carpool lanes still are not filled because of solo drivers in hybrids. It's also notable that you also jumped on the bandwagon and bought a Prius. My 2001 Prius now has more than 120,000 miles and I am also the proud owner of a 2006 Civic hybrid. I also plan to buy either an Altima or Camry hybrid in the near future, which would make us a three-hybrid family. Just wondering, are there many other multiple-hybrid owners out there?

Keith Muraoka
Gilroy

A: Oh, yes. And if the Legislature passes a bill to give owners of hybrids and other fuel-efficient vehicles a big tax credit, there may be more.

Q: As I was sitting in traffic getting aggravated by all the cars whizzing by in the carpool lane and the hybrid solo drivers taking advantage of the special lane that my tax dollars provided them and not me, I came to a sudden realization. All those gas-saving, sandal-wearing, tofu-eating, environmentalists and self-imposed elitists are doing me a huge service. They are saving gas and keeping the demand and prices down, so I can fill up my huge, gas-guzzling sport-utility vehicle more often and at an affordable price. So, to all of you out there and on behalf of the gas guzzlers of America, thank you!

Todd Wester
San Jose

A: As prices approach $3.30 a gallon, I bet you are thinking of wearing sandals, eating tofu and keeping your gas hog parked in the driveway.

Q: Blaney Avenue at Bollinger Avenue in West San Jose desperately needs left-turn signals. Every day cars barrel through on yellow or red lights and won't let cars making left turns exit the intersection. The intersection has a lot of pedestrians (elderly) and bicyclists (children) as well. Can we get left-turn lights?

Richard S.
San Jose

A: The city will study the intersection to determine whether left-turn signals are needed, but this will take a few months. In the meantime, they checked the area and found some defective loops that took away some green time for cars on Blaney. They've been repaired, and engineers added more green time for traffic going north and south on Blaney.

Q: To Quintin Boe (Roadshow, Feb. 27), who charged that you "crossed the line to become an extension of the Man" when you reported that the California Highway Patrol wanted readers to tell you when they saw drivers speeding on the Dumbarton Bridge: Gary works for us, the motoring public, as do the cops on the bridge. Thank you for helping to protect us from the likes of Boe. ... Seems like Boe thinks things on the road are a game to be played by, oh, maybe children who don't know what laws are all about. I say you are paid to protect our safety. Please keep us all informed how we may assist police in enforcing laws until we can get the number of police officers increased.

Thom Mayer, Ray Crump and more

A: Will do.

Well it sounds like to me that this is a example of one reason if not the most important reason for the New FE/MPG Ratings that the EPA is or has already put into place for all vehicles including the Hybrids.

My 2006 HCH II is getting 39-41 MPG daily use and that is just driving it in a very normal manner. 70-80 MPH on interstate and the speed limit on the 2-lane roads.

If anyone owns a Hybrid or not a Hybrid the way one drives is going to show in your FE/MPG Numbers. That is just the way it is.

Point, do not Blame the Vehicle, you have to slow up, Period.

Of course this is just my "Opinion" as usual. But I have owned my HCH II for over a Year. If you want mileage like the older EPA Numbers on the Window Sticker then you have No-Choice but to drive for Mileage, Not the way you want to drive. Slow=Up and take off in a (Very Slow Steady) manner from Stops.

I might mention here that I have No-Complaints at all period with this HCH II:

Do you really get 70-80 MPG on the interstate? Or do you mean 70-80 MPG.

If people would learn to time lights, which I know you can't do if you've never taken that route before, and to coast up to lights, that you'd get very near the EPA estimates.

Hell, I get over the EPA estimates and I drive the speed limit. Looks like all you **** speeders have a reason to obey the law now. Can't say speeding in an SUV or the likes really affects your MPG too much though. Might lower it by 1-2 MPG unless you really floor it, but no more than that.

Sorry, :o as you guessed that figure was Driving-Speed on the Interestate, 70-80 MPH:

My reason for mentioning speed driven was to show the Hybrid will still get Great FE IMHO. :D If one wants better, then the choice is to Slow-Up: :)

I will still stick with the Hybrid, it delivers for me in all driving situations:

My Boo-Boo

Not very resouceful person. With one evening of search on internet I had found many answers to such questions and read the tarabell's user guide.

But, if the answer is good, the fact that the answer goes on a general public site instead of a specialized site like cleanmpg may help.

PM, I would really like to read what "Exactly" your "2nd Paragraph" means. I am not sure I am getting the (Full-Picture) from your comments.

It sounds like you are saying that this Thread does not "Belong" here on CleanMPG and that it should be on another "Forum". Reason the Thread and comments are not FE/MPG for a site like CleanMPG. Is this correct or I have I just really {Missed} your point ????

...you are saying that this Thread does not "Belong" here on CleanMPG...

Before anything, before to use the red, you should maybe wait to see the color of my answer.

First, I'am not english native, so some subtilities might not have been rendered well, sorry if it's the case.

Now, I am saying that in the community on CleanMPG I belong to, we all know why she not do well in term of mpg. The usual readers in this site are kind of specialized about fuel saving and for many of us about environmental consciousness. Two months ago, before I bought the hybrid, I did'nt know the existence of this site and the existence of the word or concept "hypermiling", even if I was a pretty good hypermiler at that time for the car I had. This to say, the readers in this site are specialized.

I'am saying that this women, obviously never made a search in the internet to see how she could do better with her car. She asked her question on a general site having nothing to do with hybrid (unless I'am wrong). If the guy give an intelligent answer like "in order to learn to be more efficient, you should go on site such cleanmpg" and if the answers is read by a lot of none-sepcialized person, it will make the promotion of the hybrid cars and the probotion of this site. None-specilized person will learn that there is many persons existing on this planet being or felling concerned by the fuel saving in individual car, which is just one of many solution existing to reduce the greenglass gasses impacts.

Most (read all) of us on this site know that what is coming with the global warming will not be funny at all but, by exchanging it on this site, we just talk together, between persons already "informed". When the information about hybrid, about other paradigms in term of transportation, about global warming, goes to other none-specialized group, this help.

At lease, I hope.

So I hope, dear Terry, you will recover your green color and have a good day.

Terry,
I think what he is saying is that it is good that the thread is here, but it will do more good when people respond on more mainstream sites as a lot of people don't go to niche sites like ours to find answers.

Yes, Terry, what I want to say is that it is good that the thread is here, but it will do more good when people respond on more mainstream sites as a lot of people don't go to niche sites like ours to find answers.

It's so easy with some help :not_ripe:

Pierre,

I just new that I must have "Missed" what your (True-Meaning) was and that is why I was hoping you might make a further comment/comments.

Tom B. also said exactly what you were saying. If one does not ask, then how are you going to know what the Poster really meant to say.

Thanks for the further comments. Very Appreciated. :D

Just a comment here Pierre to you. I hope you are really enjoying the www.CleanMPG.com (http://www.CleanMPG.com) Forum. It certainly reads like you are and it is nice to read comments from other Countries and Members like yourself. Certainly hope you will continue to drop by here often and add your suggestions/comments for us to view.

Have a Great-Day !!!! :flag:
