Chevrolet finally got the gear ratios down with the 1.4LTurbo and the six speed MT.

Obviously that is going to be the fuel mileage set up in the LT and LTZ. :)

When will the 1.4 turbo with AT arrive?

The 1.4T with automatic says "late availability", according to Chevy, and elsewhere I am seeing predictions of "early next year". Extrapolating from the numbers for the Cruze Eco, I am not holding out hope for the 6AT matching the 29/40 rating of the turbo with the six speed stick.

The hatch is 14" shorter??
Folks buy the hatch because they want carrying volume-a mini SW or mini SUV.Home depot capable.
Why make it less capable?

CharlieUnfortunately manufacturers always make the hatch shorter, rather than offering a true wagon. After all, why sell a wagon with real utility when most people who want that utility are willing to spend $5k more on a small SUV?

I guess it is a style thing- a long overhang tall roofline looks too much like a station wagon-since it is a sw.
Guess folks buy with their eyes.
I just looked at the Prius- it has very little overhang-18" from the rear of the back tire.

Have you ever owned a hatch?
The advantage of a hatchback is the flexibility of the space, not the overall length. You can get bigger things into it, and its easier to load. If you have a million little things, you might be able to cram it into a sedan, but even with the folding rear seat, the pass thru is too intrusive to be able to carry bulky things. The shorter length is also an advantage because it usually translates to lower weight, and ease of parking in areas where an unattractive strip mall sea-of-parking landscape is not the norm.

Waynes earlier post re: the Sonic and cargo capacity also misses the point. He cites the inability of being able to load full-sized suitcases, then goes on to say the sedan would be better for "everyday" cargo capacity. Who carries 2 or 3 full-sized suitcases during their "everyday" daily drive?

About the sedan vs. hatchback discussion ... I've had sedans, and I've had a hatchback. For my purposes, a hatchback is a far better compromise, despite some drawbacks. As Wayne noted, in effect, the official EPA methods of measuring sedan and hatchback cargo volumes give a bit of an unfair advantage to hatchbacks.

I don't agree that "manufacturers always make the hatch shorter." Often they do, but not always. Hatchback models from several manufacturers have been the same (or near the same) length as otherwise similar sedans. I can't think of any current examples, but we don't have to go very far back to find some. Those longer hatchbacks obviously tended to have more cargo space than the chopped-off kind, along with the usual hatchback advantages over sedans.

One reason manufacturers shorten hatchbacks is to limit weight. Sedan-length hatchbacks tend to be significantly heavier in the rear than corresponding sedans, unless structural stiffness of the body is compromised. Even many of our more common chopped-off hatchbacks are a little heavier than corresonding sedans, although the Sonic, with its large difference in length, appears to be an exception.

I agree with aca2983's description of hatchback advantages, except the "usually translates to lower weight" part.
