"I believe strongly in American technology. And I think in the end it will be technology that will ultimately save Detroit." (http://www.detroitnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070412/AUTO01/704120343/1148)

Fix it or you won’t be baaaccckkk.

WASHINGTON - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger pulled no punches Wednesday in telling Detroit automakers to "get off your butt" and increase the fuel efficiency of their cars and trucks, saying they are "still lagging behind."

Schwarzenegger's comments came as he responded to a billboard that went up last month along Interstate 75 in Detroit that criticized him for mandating vehicle emission caps in California that will be costly for Detroit automakers to meet.

The billboard, from U.S. Rep Joe Knollenberg, R-Bloomfield Hills, reads: "Arnold to Michigan: Drop Dead." It features Schwarzenegger's photo and drew widespread attention.

"Now, there's a billboard in Michigan that accuses me of costing the car industry $85 billion," Schwarzenegger said at a speech in Washington. "The billboard says, 'Arnold to Michigan: Drop dead.' The fact of the matter is what I'm saying is, Arnold to Michigan: Get off your butt. Get off your butt and join us."

In 2002, California ordered its air resources board to adopt caps to dramatically reduce carbon dioxide emissions and force more than a 30 percent improvement in fuel economy over the next decade. The auto industry has filed suits to block the regulations. Schwarzenegger said the rules would help the industry.

"What we are doing is we are pushing them to make changes, to make the changes so they can sell their cars in California," he said. "And we all know -- let's be honest -- that if they don't change, someone will. The Japanese will. The Chinese will. The South Koreans will. The Germans will."

Schwarzenegger spoke at the Global Environment Conference at Georgetown University. He said he is optimistic about the future of Detroit automakers, all struggling to compete against foreign rivals grabbing ever more U.S. auto sales.

"I want them to sell the cars in California," Schwarzenegger said. "I believe strongly in American technology. And I think in the end it will be technology that will ultimately save Detroit."

General Motors Corp. and DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group agreed with the governor's emphasis on technology, but took issue with other aspects of his comments.

"Technology is the solution, but it's not government mandates that are not based on science or on what consumers want or need," GM spokesman Greg Martin said.

GM is aggressively pursuing technologies to improve fuel economy, Martin said, and has more 30-mpg models on the road than any automaker.

Chrysler spokesman Jason Vines said U.S. auto companies have led environmental advances, including the development of the catalytic converter.

Knollenberg spokesman Trent Wisecop said Schwarzenegger "is dead wrong on this issue. The mandates that are coming out of California would devastate the manufacturing sector of the American economy."

Maybe we should take a poll on what the AHnuld would drive in a remake of T1:

a bio-Hummer
a Prius
a Chevy Volt
I'd want him to crash in a Volt and electicute everybody :D

Priceless!

Detroit has a long history of resisting change. Basic safety improvements were implemented only after long campains by Nader. In the 70's smaller cars only came about from Japanese competition.

I hope Arnold's message sinks in. Global oil resources are not increasing, and pressure from India and China are going to make a serious impact on prices soon.

i don't see how detroit can miss the message that if we don't improve mileage, people won't be able to afford their cars. so it's kind of moot about the damage to be done to the economy. they need to look past the end of their noses......

if i am getting 55mpg with my car, and can get by with 10 gallons a week for the 400 miles i drive to work, i may output $30 weekly for gas. in the same scenario, someone with a GM truck that gets 13 mpg will be paying 4 times as much.

The level of panic must be increasing due to the Vermont hearings this week.

According to the NYT, the latest salvo is "more fuel-efficient cars could be dangerous because they will be cheaper to drive and lead people to drive more and potentially have more accidents."

You heard right -- Detroit is saying it’s a bad idea for everybody to drive more.

Wow, Detriot is getting real desperate with comments like that. I for one support AHnold's endeavors against Cyberdine.

Hmm,I guess the impact of a disruption in supply of oil from the middle east must not be as significant as I thought. You go AHnold!

Isn't this the same Arnold that has been trying to sell the idea of fuel cells for a decade? It sure is.

Let's not pat him on the back too hard. His heart may be in the right place but his end-point decision making needs work.

Hi,
How much are the "big three" spending on lawsuits to stop progress ? Might be better spent on R&D.
How many Hummers does our govenator own ?? He COULD lead by example. Interesting psychological problem for him. He would LOOK bigger in a Prius than a hummer.

No, he would look bigger in a FEH.

The billboard went up some time ago, and made big news here. It was amazing the street reaction, instead of anger towards Ahnold, it was support, since we're tired too of having the big 3 whine instead of doing something. Then, when they do something, we get absurdity like the Ford Hy-wire. Or the Volt, which looks great, but doesn't exist.

No, the Big 3 have cotton in their ears, there can be no doubt of that.

Just desubsidize (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22true+cost+of+gasoline%22) gasoline. Then everyone would demand more fuel-efficient cars.

Hi All:

___The item Lutz doesn’t get is the mandates and legislation are not even in force yet and he is screaming the world has ended. WTF did a doubling of gasoline do to his as well as F and DCX these past 2 years. They (CEO’s of the domestics) are not connecting the dots. Large P/U’s and SUV’s with gasoline at $3.00 + are not flying off the lot because many of those that had purchased them in the past see their fuel bill costing almost as much as the car payment if they drive any kind of distance. This is why they are looking at automobiles like the Prius, Corolla and Yaris let alone the domestic quality issues that appear to be a bit over emphasized …

___Either way, the Big 2.5 lost $Billions these past 2 years because of real world fuel pricing, not because of mandates or legislation. If they choose not to start pointing in the right direction, they will be bankrupt that much sooner then later …

___Good Luck

Detroit management and the people that insist on buying gas guzzlers...as GWB said...are addicted. So far they can't be reasoned with - they want what they want so badly they live in denial. If the rest of the country did not have to suffer for their stupidity, I'd say let them crash all the harder.
