View Full Version : My first trip with the ScanGauge II

I finally received my SG II today and have been playing with it in my Yaris. As I knew ahead of time I cannot use it for accurate MPG or fuel longevity tracking due to it not being able to recognize a fuel cutoff (which I use extensively on my mountain commute) but at least it's showing me a few other useful data points.

I've already learned that I've been head-tripping over using 5th gear on some of the smaller uphill grades of a percentage point or two: it turns out it's more efficient for me to use 4th gear through those sections. My worst nightmare was confirmed about some of the 2nd/3rd gear hairpin-into-a-steep-climb sections which show I really am at my heaviest engine load (96) and worst mileage (14) in those areas.

It's also shown me to get out of 3rd gear and into 4th as soon as is practical on the mountain as it is definitely better for climbing than maintaining a speed. This will help me in one spot that I usually held onto 3rd for an extended period for the extra torque.

This is also the first time that I've had a tachometer since I got the Yaris on 02/21. I discovered that I have not been getting above 2,650 RPM in normal driving. There are a few spots on the mountain that I'll get higher than that out of necessity and I can certainly rev higher than that in a fuel cut-off, but other than that I am definitely in the lower RPM range.

It's time for some fine tuning. :)

BailOut, If I could ask what does the scangauge display when in fuel cutoff for instantaneous fuel economy? I assume when you say it won't report accurate mpg it is the trip mpg? Been thinking of getting a scangauge but I thought both of these functions would work.
Thanks

In my Yaris a DFCO (Deceleration Fuel Cutoff) looks like this on the SG II:

1) LOD (Engine Load) will drop well below a reading at idle. My 5MT Yaris shows an LOD of 43 at idle but only 34 in DFCO.
2) GPH/LPH (fuel rate) will bottom out at 0.2 - 0.4 GPH or 0.75 - 1.5 LPH.
3) LP (fuel system loop) will be solidly Open.
4) MPG/LHK will go to the high side (it will take a few seconds but it will go quite high, i.e. 100+ MPG).

Hi BailOut:

___Your iFCD reading from the SG-II in Fuel Cut is dependent on speed but at 60 +, you should be well into the mid 240 + mpg range w/ the 1.5L? The Accord with the 2.4 in Fuel Cut at 60 shows ~ 150 mpg and fuel consumption is based on Stoich and ICE size w/ the ever present F/A ratio draw. As speed falls, Fuel cut - mpg readings will as well. Let us know what she reads at those kinds of speeds although I am very interested in the huge offset you will build in from your thousands of feet potential bleed on the downhill leg. I wish there was a way through the OBD-II port to grab a Fuel Cut parameter so as to remove that non-accurate fuel consumption :(

___.3 GPH is what the Accord draws at idle and it has a large effect vs. 0 GPH under a FAS. I thought your 1.5 would show .2 GPH almost exclusively once warmed up?

___I do have a question about your Yaris’ BUS. Does the Yaris use a CAN or ISO Bus reading through the Auto Detect of your SG-II?

___Good Luck

Hey bail, whats the lowest speed we can use 5th in?

@Wayne:

Yes, I actually see lots of 200+ MPG readings when in DFCO, but I was trying to show what DFCO would look like in any vehicle on an SG II. Some vehicles will only see readings in the 100-200 range.

The Yaris draws 0.2 GPH at idle once warmed up but the SG II can read as high as 0.4 when in DFCO because it uses LOD as part of its calculations. The SG II seems incapable or recognizing the difference between a fuel-based and fuel-less engine braking engine load.

As to CAN vs. ISO, how can I find out?

@Armavir:

On level or downhill ground I use 5th as low as 25 MPH to maintain a speed. If you need to accelerate at all in 5th (again on level or downhill ground) then 35 MPH will be the bare minimum.
