View Full Version : Replaced Broken Lawn Mower with Electric
Delta Flyer 04-03-2007, 08:57 AM Had an electric lawn mower with a mulch bag, but made the mistake of abruptly attempting to roll over a very thick patch of grass - burned out the engine. :(
Replaced it was a gas mower a couple of years ago - it's not starting.
A friend knew someone with an electric mower (http://www.powerequipmentwarehouse.com/images/BD%20842849.jpg) she was trying to sell, so last night I got it. Only wish it had a mulch bag.
PaleMelanesian 04-03-2007, 11:13 AM Could you somehow combine the old and new mowers? Call it a hybrid!
I have 3 acres to mow. It's a Craftsman 48" tractor with 3 blades and a 24hp v-twin engine. I have needed the power, too. The grass gets so thick, even this machine bogs down and dies. It uses about a gallon per acre. :o
Delta Flyer 04-03-2007, 11:22 AM In my vision of the near future, the grass clippings would be the ethanol to fuel future movings.

As long as we keep a small yard (we're under 1/8 acre) I am sold on electric mowers. We got one from my wife's grandmother and as long as you watch the cord it's perfect for a small yard. It was a little weird the first time I started it as it sounds just like a vacuum cleaner, but it's lightweight and quiet and doesn't pollute. Sold. --RN
BailOut 04-03-2007, 11:45 AM I miss my electric mower. :(
My situation isn't as extreme as PaleMelanesian's by any means but the last 2 homes we've owned have had yards at .25 and .20 acre (not including when I do the neighbor's yards for them, too) so I've gone beyond just a gas mower straight to the riding kind. It's a 40" 12hp tractor with a cup holder and DRL. It's right in-line with PaleMelanesian's tractor at 0.5 gallons/acre at exactly 1/2 the hp.
It's not the cleanest device in the world but it's kind of nice mowing the lawn around sunset on a summer day with an adult beverage in the cup holder and nothing but a pair of shorts on.

I have been using a Black and Decker CMM-625 for roughly 11 years and could not be happier. I've actually gotten several neighboors to buy into the cordless mulchin mowers fad since then, and they too, don't miss the maintenance worries and priming times they spent with the old gas powered ones.
We've also gotten the $50 solar charging kits that place a full charge in the mowers in two days... just in time for the next trim. They can almost 1/2 acre per charge.
Clean, quieter and inexpensive ownership, I highly recommend them.
Cheers;

tbaleno 04-03-2007, 01:28 PM Delta Flyer, care to write up a review of your new mower in the Reviews section?

Delta Flyer 04-03-2007, 01:44 PM The ultimate lawn mover would be an automated Israeli one that came out over five years ago. I'd need my lawn leveled better to let one loose, but the cordless mower would pace the lawn, mulching the grass, "learning" the landscape. Just add a doghouse for it to go and recharge after it's done. :D
msantos 04-03-2007, 02:05 PM Indeed. We actually had a demonstration by LawnBot a couple of years ago. I believe they got a local dealer - just don't know whether it is a "sustainable business" or not :). Pretty nifty though.

congrats on the new mower, ive been thinking about an electric mower myself, my reel mower is kinda tough to use on my lawn (zoysia grass... its really dense)

BailOut 04-14-2007, 12:55 PM I just went back to an electric mower. I went to mow the lawn for the first time this year and realized just what a PITA my riding mower is at this new house. Between the smell and noise of it, the inability to get it close to the fence in the front yard, having to tweak it to get it through the gate and its lack of a catch bag (which costs $400 and would make it impossible to get it through the gate at all), I'd had enough.
I bought a Homelite 20" corded electric: http://www.homelite.com/products/mowers/ut13120/productdisplay.htm
... and I already love it. :) It's so light and easy to maneuver, it's much quieter than the riding mower by far, and now I realize just how much I've missed having a catch bag for the last few years.
