View Full Version : Maint. Day
psyshack 04-01-2007, 12:23 AM I just did maint. on our two Hondas today. Rotated the tires. Full inspection. Replaced air intake and cabin filters. Changed the oil and filter. Used M1 5w-20 with pure one filters. Changed tranny fluid and filter in the AT Accord and the MT fluid in the Civic.
I kinda forgot about the poor Accord. I let the oil go 15406 miles,,, whoops. It was a blend of M1 0w-20 and 5w-20. The Civic was at the 9k mile mark. I normally go 10k mile oil changes on both cars.
The Accord was down about a half qt. Not bad for a 15+k mile oci. Didn't look like the Civic used a drop.

BailOut 04-01-2007, 09:53 AM I applaud you for doing your own maintenance, especially as it's not the easiest thing to do anymore. Everything keeps getting more complex, smaller and tighter.
Please be sure to recycle all of the old fluids at an appropriate place. Most auto parts stores will collect engine and gear oils, if not then perhaps your city has a collection point.

As of the last few years I do take the used oil to a wal-Mart or a auto parts store for recycle. I will tell you,,, this doesn't make me happy. I would much prefer to edge fence's or side walks with it for weed control. I don't support curb side recycling as it cost me money. And when I dump 9 quarts of M1 in a tank somebody else is going to make very good money off of. It ticks me off. I do hold back my quart/jug drippings and such for lawn mower and chain saw bar lube. So when I throw out containers they are dry. I drip dry oil filters and even cut them open at times to see what they are holding that the engine dosent want me to know about. They go in the standard trash when Im done with them.
I prefer to do all my own work on my cars and can do or have done machine work thru friends or family. Once a car is out of warranty a dealer will never touch it again. NEVER!!!! I don't care how involved the repair is. I will do it or the car is gone. Even tight little tech cars are easy over all to work on if you look at the issues at hand. Sure the control systems are more complex.... but the fact is your desktop or laptop computer has more processing and instruction set power than any car ever built. Those are component replacements. Take the ECU failure on my Civic. Hondas diagnostic system wouldn't peg it down. I knew it was the ECU. After proving voltages, grounds and any possible harmonics,,, I had to get a lawyer to address the issue. when the new ECU was plugged in my car was back. I feel it had been bad from almost the start. Again it was just a component replacement. The tech in a modern car shouldn't scare anybody. Esp. anybody thats savvy with a computer. Or understands the basics of 12v dc.
So with gods grace I will wear out another 9 qt's of M1. :)

Chuck 04-02-2007, 07:54 AM Reminds me I need to rotate my tires and do the oil.
bear15 04-07-2007, 08:52 AM Well stated!! We try to do all our work also. Just a quick question. Do you find any problems mixing oil grades (0w-20 and 5w-20)?

Bear I have no issues or problems blending or mixing oil at all. I wont be running 0w-20 in my cars anymore. Unless I can find it in 5 qt. jugs. Here its almost 6 bucks a qt. It isn't worth it IMO. A 5 qt. jug of 5w-20 is 21 dollars. I would prefer M1 0w-30. but I cant find it anymore.

In my 5MT Civic I run Mobil 1 5w-20 motor oil right now.
In the Accords 5AT Mobil 1 ATF.
I don't recommend this for everybody. But it has worked well for me.

Harold 04-08-2007, 10:29 AM Sorry, I thought you had a 06 Civic with the CVT.

Nope Harold,,, Its a EX 5MT. If Honda had seen fit to build the HCHII the way I wanted it there would be one in the drive way right now. That being a 5 or 6MT, rear disc brakes and no auto climate control. In other words,,, My EX with IMA. Or LX with the rear drum brakes. ( shuddering ) I might have bitten on.

Harold 04-12-2007, 08:43 PM Psy: I have the 2006 hch, which I like, but have not owned a early model to compare it with. The brakes do the job and I really like the feel of the CVT. Very smooth. I don't know what Honda's reasoning would be for using drum brakes on the hch, maybe wieght? or to keep the price down! It is a great little car in my estimation. Have a good day.
