I came to this site via "metrompg" (which I love). I currently have two metro XFI's (93 and 94) two extra XFI motors and trans. and a 2000 Toyota Echo. I also have a 87 Toyota 4wd van, which I can pull 24mpg from on long slow trips. I orig. discovered the XFI on accident. Last summer I was out hiking in Montana, I needed a way back to Michigan (and having a dog, that rules out buses and trains) So I jumped on Craigslist and found a 91 metro XFi for $300. I had no idea what "XFI meant (still don't, other than what makes them an XFI) It didn't look like much, and had over 200k on it. But I still managed to get 58mpg on the way home. I once got 60mpg driving at 57mph! Amazing cars. I bought the Echo just a few weeks ago, 2-door 5-speed. I've been getting 48-50mpg on long trips at 60mph with that. another amazing car. I look forward to learning a whole lot more about my mpg obsession here. Thanks!

60 mpg at 57 mph...way to go!
I'll be interested to hear about how things go with the Echo. It always seemed like a car that would get some good mpg when driven with some attention.
I look forward to learning a whole lot more about my mpg obsession here.
The fact that you admit it is an obsession is a good thing as far as most people around here are concerned. Welcome aboard!

Welcome to CleanMPG! From the sound of things already, it sounds like we'll learn as much from you as you do from us. I have a brother that lives in the UP. He lives about 30 miles east of Marquette in a little berg called Eben Junction.

Welcome - Those are some real good numbers. My sister had an echo. she loved that car until a drunk driver totaled it. I have it on tape and show it to my students about drunk driving. Anyway, welcome:D

Thanks for the hails! Good to find like minded folks.
I have been amazed by the Echo no doubt. Since they started out fairly cheap to begin with, you can find a good used one for $4000, or sometimes less. I once saw a 2002 with body damage (cosmetic only) for $1100. I should have bought it, but I was busy messing with metros. I've been reading up on the Echo a bit, the stripped 2-door weighs in at just under 2000 pounds. I was prepared for a gutless wonder (the XFI trained me well) but that certainly isn't the case. The Echo is a peppy little car when it (you) want it to be. It's also very tall geared, it's the first car I've owned in a while that I worry about getting pulled over for speeding. It will do 75mph before you know or feel it. It's too bad they didn't sell a hatchback model in the US (Though I believe they were in Europe) After the novalty wears off some, I might do some drastic mods to it, like make my own HB!
My ultimate dream is to build my own XFI powered two seater, extremely light, aerodynamic, utilitarian, pure MPG motivated. I search out XFI parts everywhere I go. I'll have a garage full soon. My girl-friend rolls her eyes whenever she hears "XFI"...:)
Thanks again for the warm welcome!
