View Full Version : Is anyone having problems with the google map? tbaleno 03-26-2007, 04:33 PM There have been reports that the icons aren't showing up on it for some users. www.cleanmpg.com/google/ brick 03-26-2007, 04:38 PM Works for me. Dan 03-26-2007, 04:55 PM Works for me, but I'm listed "skilled hypermiler". Don't think I've been knighted yet, but I'll take the promotion. 11011011 mparrish 03-26-2007, 05:16 PM It works for me, although there do appear to be a few oddities. When not P&Ging in his 2004 Prius, krousdb spends his time liberating his native Kashmir from Indian rule. The Great China Wall allows for some excellent driving with load opportunities for b-man & BailOut Fredness appears to be the "Manchurian candidate" hypermiler. There may be a few coordinates off for these guys :) Or maybe something odd is happening with my browser. I still live in Austin :) basjoos 03-26-2007, 07:27 PM It shows my "Farm Truck", but not my "Aerocivic". tbaleno 03-26-2007, 09:47 PM Okay, all those that were visiting asia should now be closer to home. I also added a little fluff to the zipcode database so people living in areas with multiple zipcodes close together have a little more spacing. This means tarabell should be able to find herself if she zooms in close enough. ;) Basjoos, zoom in really close and you will see your other car hidden. hobbit 03-27-2007, 12:54 AM First, "/google" immediately redirects to "/google/", so using the right link would save a little bandwidth. . When I hit it with a GUI browser, I see three tiny gas-gauge pictures and a little text around it, and that's it. . _H* tbaleno 03-27-2007, 01:59 AM Is javascript enabled on your browser? Chuck 03-27-2007, 12:11 PM Until I saw the Google Map, I did not know krousedb was outsourced. :D tarabell 03-29-2007, 09:28 AM I also added a little fluff to the zipcode database so people living in areas with multiple zipcodes close together have a little more spacing. I’ve figured out my office PC is blocking out the icons somehow—they only show up at home. But even at home I’m still not showing up. There’s only 4 pins around LA and I’ve zoomed way, way in so no overlapping, but I’m not any of them. I should be right between b-man and jkash. Zip code is correct in the database. Am I only invisible to myself? Too metaphysical for this early in a.m..... tbaleno 03-29-2007, 09:49 AM You are just west of Los Angeles Harbor College and Harbor Park. You have to zoom into about level 4 to see you. You are under jkash and baddriver Skwyre7 03-29-2007, 10:12 AM Still haven't 'found myself' ;) . But I still have issues ;) . I don't live here--my zipcode is 20 miles north. And something looks odd about 5 people all in a line with 2 living inside a golf course. Skwyre7 03-29-2007, 12:39 PM That 12th hole is REALLY difficult! :D tbaleno 03-29-2007, 01:27 PM Heh. I'd like to mention the locations are approximate. I obviously had to mess around with the lat and long cooridinates to spread people out since people in the same zipcode would be in the exact same location. Heck, even people with different zipcodes could end up at the same spot if they were in the same general area. When you see people lined up in a row like that it means their zipcodes were either identical or that the lat and long reported for that zipcode was identical. This map isn't made to give people exact street locations as I'm sure people would prefer that it didn't, and even if they wanted people to know exactly where they live the maps resolution is only as good as where the zipcode is generaly located. It should only be used to get a general idea of who is around you. Don't try to drive to a spot and see someones house there ;) Secon hobbit 04-01-2007, 07:28 PM Javascript? Bah, what do you take me for... of course not. As I point out to all and sundry, javascript is an OPTIONAL EXTENSION and not a w3c standard, besides being a security nightmare. With the seething hell of browser exploits coupled with massive identity theft going on out there in the real world today, it behooves any webmaster to make things work without dependence on scripting features -- it isn't hard to do, and ensures universal browser compatibility. . Please take that seriously, as you go on to design other web projects. This is going to become a much larger problem as things progress. Just google for "disable javascript" to hear it from sources other than me. . _H* tbaleno 04-01-2007, 08:00 PM I also have javascript disabled for most sites. I enable it on a site by site bases. Unfortunatly I believe the google api requires javascript. I do hesitate using it, but unfortunately lots of times there really isn't a choice. hobbit 04-02-2007, 08:28 AM Well, there is a choice. Just like you would advocate more economical vehicles to drivers, we can pipe up and tell the webmasters at misguided sites that they are encouraging risky behavior and they should rethink their designs. Right now I might be a mostly lone voice crying in the script-driven wilderness, but to knuckle under and say "well, you just have to lower your own standards" is the same kind of complacency that keeps people buying SUVs. So get out there and SAY SOMETHING. Even if it seems hopeless because Google is a big company now. The more people start saying "you will not tell me how to run my browser", the more these organizations might have to listen. . _H* tbaleno 04-02-2007, 09:16 AM Good point. vBulletin® v3.6.7, Copyright ©2000-2013, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
