MaxxMPG 05-28-2011, 02:58 PM Congrats! That interior looks strangely familar, as though I have seen it somewhere before... :)
36mpg to start is great, isn't it? You're already at about double what the average sedan passing you in the next lane is getting.
2RR2NV 05-28-2011, 03:11 PM LOL. yeah, i imagine everyone is probably bored with seeing the same pics of the same kind of car, buuutt, since someone is gonna post that it ain't real without pics, i figure i better nip that in the butt right off. :)
and yes, i showed the wife the gauges and she was quite surprised with seeing 36mpg for a brand new car. i imagine it will go down a bit since i'll be doing more city driving than the dealer did, to get the car to me. not complaining one bit. never owned a car that got that great of mileage. now to find some excuses to go driving. ;)
msirach 05-28-2011, 03:54 PM Congrats! I'm sure that wasn't you that blew by me this morning traveling to Indy. I know it wasn't getting 36mpg. It was the same color as yours and it caught my eye. Very nice!
Right Lane Cruiser 05-28-2011, 07:02 PM Now that is drool worthy! :D
2RR2NV 05-28-2011, 08:02 PM thanks ya all. naw, i was nowhere near Indy, but maybe the dealer's driver took an out of the way trip to get it to the dealership. :)
got to take a short trip to the local Rib Crib for sup sup, not sure on miles, maybe 5-6 miles, and i only dropped .4 MPG. lots of hills. only 1/4 to 1/2 mile of flat stretch the whole trip. and it pulls amazingly well up the steeper hills in town. thought it would be a dog, but not unhappy one bit.
can't wait to take it out on the highway.
yeah, the ride is a bit stiff, but doesn't bother me. seats are comfy. to me, it feels very point n shoot. obviously , i'm not a pro test driver that expects a certain level for a certain $$...yada yada yada... just how i feel about the car.

2RR2NV 05-28-2011, 08:07 PM i sooooooooooo need to wash n wax my Honey's ride. positively terrible. and she is not happy. mileage is definitely gonna slow on the van. :)

Yes, wait until you take it out on the highway. It will hold 6th down to the low 40mph range, if you have a light foot. As you will find out, the throttle is very touchy, so be prepared to spend some time finding the right spot for a given speed.
The point-n-shoot feeling is the electric steering. You'll get used to it and after a while, it feels like a fun little slot-car - low and hugs the road. You won't need to use the brakes in corners.
The ride is amazing for a small light car, considering they didn't soften the springs to the point where the car porpoises down the road or loses composure on rough surfaces.
Color me impressed*.
* - If you can't find 'impressed' in the Crayola box, used Burnt Umber or other obscure hue.
2RR2NV 05-29-2011, 07:10 AM yeah, i love the Point n shoot feeling. i'd rather not porpoise down the road. yep, definitely got a touchy throttle, but i'll get used to it. no biggie.
this ride is definitely "cherry" in my book. LOL.
WriConsult 05-29-2011, 11:10 AM Looks REALLY good in that color!
2RR2NV 05-29-2011, 11:14 AM thanks WriConsult. wife is tickled pink cause it matches her van. it looks like it has a hint of copper in the paint (could be wrong since i don't have the best eyes), tho.
2RR2NV 05-29-2011, 07:47 PM just an updated pic with the Boss's ride cleaned up too. ...

Hi 2RRNV:
I’m jealous too! I had to give up the 11 Elantra 3-days early because the Press Fleet company took off with the keys when at the MAMA Spring Rally this past week. I miss the 11 Elantra GLS I was driving :ccry:

carrmann 05-29-2011, 08:50 PM thats a sharp lookin set of cars in the driveway!!
2RR2NV 05-30-2011, 06:32 AM thank you all. yeah, NEVER figured i would be driving a Hyundai and ENJOY it. years ago, when i was turning wrenches, i swore off Korean POSs like nobody's business. but, they've come a long way. I'm thoroughly impressed. My wife still can't believe i bought one. she considers it "that's one SEXY ride!"
now, onto being a better driver and seeing if i can beat EPA commuting to work. one of these days, i want to get a Satellite pic with the 2 choices for commuting and see what you guys think. i'm betting i should take the way that goes 55mph, but it has some HELLACIOUS hills. the other way, it's 65mph, and has some hills with lots of flat spots. i know i don't want to get into NICE-off stuff for a long time. i'd rather stick with the NEWB skills for awhile.
great site and a ton of info...
thank you.

Right Lane Cruiser 05-30-2011, 09:01 AM Don't do engine off in your automatic transmission Elantra if you are rolling!! It will damage the transmission.

oh yeah, i know all about that. used to turn wrenches for a few years. i guess i should have clarified the NICE off as being at stops.
SD3_Driver 05-30-2011, 11:31 PM Congrats!!!!!!!!! looking good...:)
2RR2NV 05-31-2011, 07:08 AM thanks. drove it for the first time over 40 today goin to work. she drives/rides really nice. i see where some road noise can be intrusive, but not enough to bother me (I used to drive ole MOPARS so road noise is nothing new). I LOVE IT!! it pulls better than the minivan up some of the hills. of course, that kills MPG, but i was trying to feather it and it didn't have to shift down NEAR as much. Even with my paltry skills, i'm still getting 34 avg with all those hills. i am a happy camper. like McD's.... I'm lovin it!

2RR2NV 05-31-2011, 04:52 PM i am totally amazed by this car. Here's a pic i took after driving home from work (13 miles w/ a ton of hills). i'm a total newb and this is the results....(mind you, this is with 3-4 miles of city driving included in the 13 mile trip)

PaleMelanesian 05-31-2011, 04:55 PM Excellent! 40 in your first week with an automatic.
It looks fantastic! I take it you like red? ;)
MaxxMPG 05-31-2011, 05:22 PM That 40.x is only the beginning. Other Elantra owners are reporting that the aFCD in the dash tends to be 4 or 5% high. Even if that over-report is correct, you're still in the 38-40mpg range in a car that is rated as midsize by the EPA.
Pay special attention to throttle application. I find that changes in pedal position that are so slight you can only see them on a TPS scan gage readout can make the difference between an iFCD number of 36 vs 46mpg. And with a little creative footwork, I can send the instant number way over 50. Without a gage of some sort, the best you can do is to keep lifting off the throttle - very very slightly - until speed starts to fall, and then add just enough throttle to maintain speed. Reading an exact TPS, I can see that I can hold the pedal steady, and yet the computer is changing either valve timing or ignition timing as it settles into that particular load/speed and then I find the car slowly gaining speed. So what I decided to do on my last trip out was to move the pedal until it showed a certain TPS value and then left the pedal there and let the engine "catch up".
I've driven about 50 miles so far and the fuel level is still pegged on full, so either the dealer stuffed the tank prior to delivery, or I'm getting some crazy fuel economy results. :D From what you're posting here, you appear to be in the same shape - and also getting that grin on your face when you look at the aFCD.
2RR2NV 05-31-2011, 06:43 PM Pale: i know the number is optimistic, but still, to me, it's impressive.
i like red, but mainly cause the Boss loves it. if i was the only one driving it, i'd go Titanium Grey.
Maxx: yeah, i agree about the high number, but compared to other vehicles in the past, i am not complaining one bit :) as far as throttle control, i'm at the mercy of the car displays. i will have to wait til X-mas to get a SGII. :( BUUUT, i will definitely be using your insight/experience to get better MPG. I'm not looking for Expert status, but at least EPA numbers. i think i may be able to get my number to go up even more cause it was still goin up well until i pulled into driveway and had to shutdown. we shall see... more to come... thank you for the advice. :)
Ophbalance 05-31-2011, 07:35 PM Pay special attention to throttle application. I find that changes in pedal position that are so slight you can only see them on a TPS scan gage readout can make the difference between an iFCD number of 36 vs 46mpg.
This, more than anything else, has made me truly miss having a dedicated scan/ultragauge in the Sedona. With a TPS of 23%, you see in the mid 20s iMPG. With a TPS of 20-21 you see iMPG in the 30s. And it's not really even apparent until you start hitting some hills and start into the incline portion. Though I guess I shouldn't complain, of the 15 drivers on fueleconomy.gov for the 06 Sedona, they're averaging 15.x MPG :(. I never noticed that it "only" allows for 23 MPG highway before, but yeesh. No wonder it's so bloody hard to get anything above aMPG of 21 without a gauge.
