View Full Version : Scangauge on FFH - Can't read SOC?

I took my trusty Scangauge from my recently sold FEH and installed it in my new FFH and I can't get it to read battery SOC. What gives? That is the most useful bit of data!

I tried resetting back to defaults and setting it up again. I tried plugging and un plugging, etc. No dice. Anyone else have this issue?

Also, the manual says the FFH tank is 17.5 gallons. How do you set that on the Scangauge? I can only get gallons in whole numbers.

Thanks in advance.

Setting tank size is only for the scanguage to keep track of miles to empty. You can try switching to metric units (liters) and that might get you closer.

I'm guessing the FFH is much newer than your FEH was -- and I don't know of many specific XGauges for that vehicle yet. If you manage to get it working I'd love to see the programming because I may yet get one in my wife's car.

92.2mpg over 1.4mi to Home Depot this afternoon in her car. 49.4mpg back over 1.2mi because of a rather steep hill on that route (not the same as the one I took going there).

did you get anywhere with this - could it be the FFH is newer than your SG - has Linear tested on a FFH ?

Like Mike said the SG only uses tank size for distance to empty. It really doesn't matter what you put it at. Most people round down so they don't accidentally run out or something like that.

No luck so far getting a Soc reading. I bought the Scangauge in March of 2010 I believe so it's not older than my 2010 Fusion hybrid.

Has anyone gotten a Scangauge to work on a FFH?

Wait, the SGII does not work on a FFH???

There web site says works on all 2010's and 2011's except the Chevy Cruze ...

The SG will work -- he's just saying that the XGauge indicating SoC will not work in the FFH. That XGauge code was developed for the FEH and will need to be modified to work in the Fusion.

I haven't had a chance to hook up to my sister's FFH yet, but I should be able to next weekend. It appears that for 2010 and newer hybrids that Ford switched from following the old SAE J2190 protocol for enhanced data to the newer ISO 14229 format. I think that xgauges should still be possible but they won't look the same as the 2009 and earlier stuff. A suspicious mind might believe that this was intentional on Ford's part to deny access to SG and similar devices, but I'll wait to see what's what with the 2011 FFH before I make my judgement....

Hi Carl

I've been monitoring this thread on GH and Hybridcars hoping you could give some information. Indeed, the '09 FEH gives the same battery SoC as earlier models, but the '10 has a different battery and programming.

Notice, I no longer recommend the newer FEH or FFH.

Hey GeryG, tnx for all you;ve done, why do you no longer recommend the FEH & FFH cause of the ISO 14229 format (not sure if thats true but have no reason to doubt it):eek:

Well, my sister and brother-in-law seem to like their FFH. But the electric A/C in the 2010 I test drove 2 years ago really drained the battery FAST. 'Course there are few places like Phoenix in June to test an A/C system...

At any rate, thanks to some web sites in the Far East and eastern Europe I have discovered some things that maybe can be tried out before I can get my hands on the 2011 FFH:

Battery Energy Control Module apparently is now at an address of $7E4 instead of the $745 in the 09 and earlier FEH's. It looks like SoC is now $4801 instead of $4923. An interesting DID is Battery Age, $4810. I didn't find the full spec for ISO 14229, but it looks like mode $22 is for data by identifier for 14229 just like 2190.

If someone with an FFH can go to CMNDS and enter 224801 into a memory and hit send, perhaps the FFH will reply....

EDIT:

If the above doesn't work, it may be that a command to start a diagnostic session may be required.

A possibility is to send $10 $81 to initiate a diagnostic session (not sure, maybe could be $10 $01)

That would mean enter 1081 (or 1001) in a CMNDS memory and hit send. Or it may require addressing to the specific module which would have to be done with an xgauge. Hopefully I can talk to someone at LL this week before heading out to NC.

OK, maybe this will work but maybe not. I am hopefully going to get my SG upgraded to the latest software this week before travelling back east. With the new software and a 2011 FFH maybe I can uncover some interesting xgauges for the newer Ford Hybrids.

Even though no one else has confirmed the SoC xgauge, it seems to work fine in the 2011. Also got HV battery voltage and temp, max charge and discharge power also work. Battery current is unfortunately in scaled 2's complement format which means it won't display properly.

No, as long as you have xgauge capability they will work.

Tried the SoC and HV bat temp. and they seem to work... getting readings on SoC and it looks almost the same as the Smart Gauge so that one is good,:) on the bat temp don't know but it stayed between 93f and 99f...:)

Thank You Carl D ...!!!!! :)
They all work on my 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hbrid...
I am so happy , because these codes are so hard to get...
If you have more let us know.
I will be glad to check them on my MKZh, which is the same as the Fusion.
Thanks Again...!!!! :flag:

Here is an xgauge that can be checked to see if the FEH is in a battery re-balance state if odd behavior is noticed:

RXF: 046215480618
RXD: 3008
MTH: 000100010000

This table shows what the display means for this xgauge:

01 Rebalance in progress
02 Rebalance completed successfully
03 Rebalance aborted - battery fault
04 Rebalance initializing
05 Rebalance aborted by vehicle
06 Rebalance aborted upon request
07 Rebalance aborted due to battery temp out of range
08 Rebalance can't be started due to battery fault
09 Rebalance can't be started - vehicle did not allow
0A Rebalance can't be started due to battery temp out of range
0B Rebalance suspended
0C Rebalance can't be started - maintenance mode in progress
0D Rebalance can't be started - too many attempts
0E Rebalance aborted - tester no longer present
