Well... To add to a wonderful Friday the 13th, iTunes deleted my iPhone's images. Awesome... So I had to break out the SLR.

Here we go...

So I was just exiting an active school zone, when I noticed some jack-hole tailgating me. 'Pft whatever', I thought. Then he proceeded to use the middle turn lane in order to pass me. He just so happened to like my side mirror so much that he wanted to take it with him.

So he skids to a stop, gets out, and while I'm getting out - iPhone in-hand - he's yelling at me. All the while I'm taking pictures of the scene, about two minutes of verbal abuse, and he decides to jump in his car and take off... with his two kids in the car.

I get back in and follow him. He's not getting far with all the traffic and no more middle turn lane. So I follow him for two blocks and he stops at a Jacksons. I've been on the phone with dispatch. He stops and I'm still on the phone, he gets out and proceeds to yell at me, saying he left his phone at home, so he came here to call the police. Right, buddy...

We wait about 45 minutes and an officer drives by and says he has one last call before us. The offender decides to call dispatch to complain. He calls me over and goes to hand me his phone, saying, "Hey, dispatch says they can't send anyone out cause they're swamped, so I need your ID and insurance." He hands me his phone (a Samsung running Android OS with a black and white silicon case btw) and the dispatcher says, "Sir, that is not what I said. Let me re-explain." She explains that we can leave before the officer arrives, if we'd like. I decided to go this route, as I had to get back to work, and I had enough evidence against him (how in heck else would someone get their mirror taken off on a road with three lanes, two going opposite directions, one middle turn lane?).

While I'm writing down my info for him, I hear him telling someone he'd like to "kick my ass" and says, "but I can't do that, cause the cop might show up any moment." When I handed him my info, I told him I'd make sure to include his verbal abuse in my report to our insurance agencies. His rebuttal; "Man, this is only gonna be worse for you. You'll end up with a ticket and jail time. I'll sue you and see you in court!" I had to say it, guys... "Sir, this has happened to me before. I know how this works. First of all, I won't get a ticket. Nor will you, probably, so you should thank me. Second of all, our insurance companies will duke it out since there won't be a police officer's report or a citation to base claims off of. And finally, I won't see your face ever again, because this won't go to court."

Anyways, I'm going in tomorrow to pick up paperwork to file an accident report. I've got my pictures (or will once I go back to the "scene" tomorrow with my camera).

I have received plenty of rude remarks and glares because of my economical driving habits, but really? And with your kids in the car? Big man...

that really sucks man. Sorry to hear/see about it. NO one messes with me when Im in my truck. Probably because its about 6000lbs of metal and its old hahahah. The sonata is another story.

So why didnt you have the cops do a report etc. to clear your name, and hopefully get him a ticket and/or more?

Well, I work with developmentally disabled adults, and they were with me. They were pretty shaken up, so I decided that since I had enough evidence against him, I had to take the guys back home.

I may have waited for the cops since he left the scene of an accident. I figure if he is going to be that rude about it might as well make him pay.

Edit: After reading you last post, I understand why you left. I imagined you were by yourself.

Re-reading it. I am confused on what he was going to sue you over. Maybe just his default statement when someone does something he doesn't like.

I think you almost got it right. It's pretty clear this guy was trying to bully the OP. In his mind suing is the verbal equivalent of threatening ass kicking that you resort to if you know the cops are coming.

If the DD passengers were traumatized by the bullying behavior the OP should be sure to document this to the other driver's insurance company on the reports. Bullying the developmentally disabled after an accident could be something that would cause his insurance to be dropped.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your side mirror.

On the bright side he helped improve your cars aerodynamics.

I had to LOL at this! Oh man, good one!

He said he wanted to sue me because he said I swerved to hit him. o.O

I'm a little weary about mentioning that I was at work because it is possible that my insurance company does not cover on-the-job incidents. I am not sure. "/ Stupid that I am not sure, I know. And who knows if they will find him at fault. It's always possible that they won't. *shrug*

But yes, I really wanted to wait around for the police. Unfortunately, it was not in the best interest of my clients. "/

Now, if only I could figure out how to get the mirror off...

I worry about this happening to me all the time. I can see myself slamming on the brakes for a dog or deer and getting rear-ended cause of some person with no patience. It doesn't matter how fast or slow you drive, there will always be those idiots that push safety aside to shave a few seconds.

BTW, mirrors are usually easy to get off. May be able to pull the triangle trim piece off on the inside of the door and remove a few nuts. Electric mirrors usually have the connector behind the main door panel, so you will have to remove that also if that is the case, which it looks to be.

I'm sorry to hear that this happened to you. It is amazing how hostile people are when behind the wheel.

As for the police, in my area, they won't even show up for an accident unless there is an injury.

Ya, couldn't get it off. Could not detach the wire connector for some reason. It's a tight squeeze and doesn't like to come apart... I know I don't have to leave it on there for the insurance adjustor, so I'd like to get it off ASAP. *shrug*

I got the mirror off. If only it came with instructions that say all you have to do is slice your finger open and jab your hand open, then it wouldn't have taken so long.

sorry to hear that. that is most uncool. flippin people. sometimes, that's why i like to drive my ram. ain't gonna bully that, unless you are in something much bigger. anyways, i've been driving much slower, which has had my wife start doing it too (trying todo better than I - Kudos to her). buuuuuttttt, just the other day, we were heading to base to get the truck (on lemon lot) and my previous Squadron Commander (in his VW TDI) waits to pass until we have Double Yellow, between 2 hills... WTF??? and we had the 2 youngins with us. Wife was quite irate and was all ready to go follow him, but i got her diverted. there would have been no point cause he went to base too, and the local po-po don't bother goin there unless it's something big.

Glad you didn't have something worse happen. BTDT.
