Welcome to another week in the Grind!

After touching a high of $4.01 last week, the national average for a gallon of regular gas is back down to $3.97.

I had planned to come into today but my boss's father is in the Mayo Clinic so I need to cover one of his late afternoon meetings -- the one that occurs when I'm normally on my way home. Please keep him in your prayers!

Keep your good work Scott

Andrew, did you have fun last week ?

After a few though about my driving, I realized that I changed my driving during the previous tank. Now with the hotter temps and the new air filter, I'm :

using DWL at lowest speed on all uphills, even the one with a small inclination. Before I was pulsing on these small inclination uphills.
up-shifting as soon as the engine allows it. I can shift up to 5th at 50km/h (31mph) even on small inclination uphills.

As my last two tanks got same result and my current tank seamed to aim to the same result, I decided to :

pulse again on small inclination uphills and
up-shift to nth gear at 11*n km/h (6.84*n mph) instead of 10*n km/h (6.22*n mph), ie 5th at 55km/h instead of 50 (34mph instead of 31). I remember Andrew saying such a change was making him save a few mpg. Definitively this one is making my accelerations much faster.

It seams that since Wednesday the gauge needle is lowering more slowly. At least I'm having a better result as I'm at 1577.7km and the idiot light is always off, which means 71+mpg  last being 70, but always far from the 74 needed to beat Andrew :(

Have fun,

Denis.

Morning all.

I just got my Ultragauge on Saturday and used it for the first time this morning. I haven't customized it yet except to get rid of TTE and replaced it with % engine load. I also haven't filled up yet, so it isn't calibrated.

Unfortunately I'm still not in the habit of keeping track of my mileage each morning and afternoon when I get home. It was in the 42-ish range.

Do you guys keep the daily numbers written down in a log? Or just post them here?

I had an appointment at teh eye doctor so i took trhe escort to give it a lil run and now back home. no number casue the SG is in Syvlie now.

gds: on our insights (Sean, Larry and Me) we have 3 seperate trip logs in our dash we can use. I use the segment for daily and trip a for my tank numbers. I keep a lil notepad to write down my daily numbers to post here.

Welcome back Andrew! Gonna trade in the honda for a fiesta now? :p

PaleMelanesian
05-09-2011, 10:39 AM
Probably not trading in the Civic, at least for a Fiesta. It's ... cozy. It's a B-class compared to my C-class. Cars in general have gotten bigger, so it's maybe a 1/2 size smaller. Still enough to be cramped for my 6'2" frame. At least the headroom is decent, even in the back. The left front seat is definitely the best of the bunch, though. The most notable dimensional squeeze is the width.

MPG is not quite up to the standard either. Best segment of the trip was ~75 or so mpg. I handily matched that on my drive home from the airport, including a 1/2 hour stop and crawl through Dallas downtown.

The guessgauge is playing with me...

Yesterday evening I parked the car at home @1626.6km with the idiot light off :)
The cool thing is I passed 1000mi before the idiot light switches on, ie 52L = 13.74gal :)
This morning I started the car but the idiot light stayed on :( When I parked it at work @1664.9km the idiot light was off :) During all my morning commute it switched on/off...

With 1626.6km the tank is @3.197L/100 = 73.6MPG
With 1664.9km the tank is @3.123L/100 = 75.3MPG = my all time record (@74.918MPG)
With the average, ie 1645.75km the tank is @3.160L/100 = 74.4MPG

To stay at the safe side, I should simply take 1626.6km, extrapolate to 60L and drive at most 1876.8km = 1166.5mi
But... :o
My last tank was 61.09L which @3.197L/100 would be 1910.9km = 1187.6mi
Wayne's diesel record is 1174.6mi (@84.291MPG), while mine is 1182.2mi (@74.918MPG)... So tempting... :o
During the end of last tank several times the car rev up @2000rpm instead of 1100 while idle. It may be a signal to indicate the tank is nearly empty.
I repeat to me that my 2nd best is 1134.4mi @72.347MPG and I will beat it, I'm so temped to beat my best...

Morning commute was partly bad as people are back from holidays and there was also more trucks, which are making me drive faster to their PSL when I see they can't pass me.

One thing is certain : this evening I have to put the jerrycan back into the trunk.

Have fun,

Denis.

Filled up for the first time with the Ultragauge, that's the first part of calibrating it.

According to my un-calibrated UG, this morning's commute was:
40.1 miles at 47.8 MPG.

Last tank was slightly less than the previous one, I came in at 38.2 vs. the 38.6 for the previous tank. I'm thinking that the difference could be the "top off." This time the 2nd click came almost immediately, last time it ran for a couple seconds before clicking off.

Verification... OK, the gasoline jerrycan is near to the lawn mower and I don't remember having a third jerrycan :)

I have to calculate how to reach the 1880-1900km from here to Ze gas station with my next long/short commutes to minimize the distance to Ze gas station when I'll reach the danger zone.
Searching... not very OK, I have to take the shortest commute only, which is the one with the more traffic so I will have to leave home and work sooner in the morning and evening :( but beating its own record in April-May is priceless :p

I'm not in the mindset yet to track each trip, so for now will stick with the tank mileage.

According to my non-calibrated UG, the current tank is sitting at 44.0 mpg after 169 miles. That's down from my morning commute yesterday. But that's because the first 10 miles in the morning are windy hills and I filled up after those yesterday. I should be filling up early next week and calibrate the UG.

05-11-2011, 07:56 AM
Hi, Greg -- go at your own pace but remember that the real improvements occur when you track what works and doesn't work on a trip by trip basis. If you don't, the numbers vary less and less as you accumulate miles and you really aren't much better off than you were without a gauge in the first place.

I'm working from home again as my boss is still dealing with his father's treatments. It doesn't sound as though things are going very well so keep the prayers coming!

Drive to work this morning without "high rev at idle" moment :)

As yesterday I left home 10 minutes sooner and got higher traffic through the short commute than through the longer one I use. In fact this may have helped me as the traffic was slower but made me downshift to 4th only a few times. I got longer glides also because I pumped up the tires to 4 bars from 3.7 (58 psi from 54) Wednesday :)

as odo @1862km, guesstimate of consumption is @3.28L/100 = 71.8mpg = 232% :)

Even if I don't go up to 1903km = 1183mi, at least I will have left the sub 70 mpg and validated that :

I shouldn't shift up so soon. 55km/h seams better than 50km/h (34 / 31mph) to shift up to 5th
I shouldn't dwl on light incline uphills. Pulsing on the uphills seams better when I know that dwl wouldn't make the car accelerate frankly at the top of that hill.

I want now to be over 75mpg soon, then 3.0L/100 (78.4mpg and 2000km = 1243mi tank) and 83.3mpg (equiv to a kilotank with a 12 gal tank) this summer.

Have fun,

When I have shifted up to 5th at 50km/h, I must be at around 1100rpm as for other gears. While I can accelerate from 850rpm in 2nd very easily, in 5th @1100rpm it's more tricky.
Usual eco-driving tips says to shift up @2000rpm for a diesel. The single time I heard another thing is to shift up so in the new gear the engine is @1250rpm, not under.

Very interesting results today. Today was my higher speed/time crunch day to get my daughter to voice lessons on time. Temps ranged from 60F this morning to 87F this afternoon. Winds were SSW@ 5-10 mph with gusts to 20 mph. The trip home from work was @ 55 mph and I was only able to manage 67.4 mpg. The trip to voice lessons was @ 55-60 with a peak speed of 63 for a brief time on the US-20 Bypass where the PSL is 65. That trip yielded a surprising 86.0 mpg for that speed. Then, the trip home on country/county roads yielded a disappointing 80.7 mpg. I think this was partially due to some unruly traffic and the headwind.:(

I'm glad they are feeling better!

I'm working from home again as I was up until about 2AM this morning working on a high profile data extract and interpretation requested by top of the IT chain of command. I had a full morning and have just now eaten...

My boss' father is in pretty good condition right now considering what he had to go through but they've still got to get him down to Chicago for the experimental treatment that is pretty much his last hope for life expectancy measured in years.

well we tried using the stick from the civic pack no dice. i cleared the ima light but came right back on so we shut it down and did some head scratching. i asked and he told me it had bene sitting about 5-6 week, so now we need to get a charge into it. would the sticks still show being charged? when we check they was all about 7.5 Volts 1-2 was maybe 7.2-7.3 V

The bcm is unplugged and car running on 12V only now. My brother says "now it's not a hybrid" :( the 12v started sound funny so now gonan chance it with f.a.s'ing any so number down to around tank average.

74- 7.1 mile to work

80.3- 6.0 miles home. weather helped here also. There are 2 big red light i always end up at but today the timign was right and caught both going red as i coming up so i was happy for that.

Tank sitting at 75.2- 395 miles 11-12 bars on fuel guage.

Mike, that pack needs a nice long charging session to get all the cells topped up and balanced. Swapping sticks is always a tricky business… especially without proper equipment to test capacity. The voltage can show normal but just like lead acid batteries they can quickly drop to nothing under load.

Today was a bit better for FE in the Insight.:) Temps ranged from 62F this morning to 85F this afternoon. I didn't have as much of a time crunch this afternoon so the numbers were a little better than they have been. The morning numbers seem to be steadily improving too.:)
99.1 9.2(to work)
90.4 9.2(back home)
Day Total: 94.6mpg over 18.4mi

After a 4 day hiatus I rode to work again (I'm on holiday but I was called back for this one night...).

In the meantime I accidentally got a GPS. I tried to test Teresa's tripmeter accuracy, but it's a fail for now, the software I downloaded for my new phone (the earlier is practically dead, it was 6 years old) literally leaks distance... so it measured the 25+km way as 13.6km. Then, after I took off my gloves and helmet, it showed 12.1...
So I went ~ minus one mile while I was standing in a parking lot. Brilliant. I need some other software...
