I buy this home off an estate of the original owners last month.
Last week I had a local kitchen remodeling company in to look at updating and doing a new layout of the old kitchen. A week goes by and they call to have me come on in and show me what they came up with. I don't know how I didn't laugh at them yesterday when they showed me their work and the price of the kitchen.
They wanted to take a ceiling bulkhead down and replace the existing cabinets with longer ones and swap out the old exhaust hood for a microwave/exhaust fan combo above the range.
Remove 10 cabinets and 9 ft of counter
Remove a 13" X 15" X 17 ft bulkhead above the wall cabinets.
Remove old ceramic floor.
Install a new ceramic floor about 90 square feet.
Install 11 of cheapest cabinets they offered.
Install new Formica counter
New stainless steel sink and faucet set
Install the Microwave / exhaust fan
They never changed one thing in the layout other than the dishwasher is moved 12" closer to the sink.
Final cost $18,500
Oh they did tell me they would take $600 off the bill if I took up the floor and remove the old cabinets, counter and disposed it for them.
Retail cost of cabinets, floor, counter and microwave/exhaust fan hood is around $4,000
I just spent three hours on IKEA's web site playing with their FREE online kitchen planning software. I'm probably 80% done, and have another hour or so of work to do to get it exactly the way I want it laid out. You may not want IKEA's cabinetry but their software makes it real nice that you can know the exact dimensions of every cabinet, and appliance you have planned for your kitchen. :)
