View Full Version : Best segment yet!
Kilo Delta 04-25-2011, 09:36 PM Sunday I drove back from West, Tx. to Dallas, some 83 miles. I bought gas at the Check Stop in West, and got in I35 north with Cruise Control set to 56mph. It was 89F and I had a good tail wind, you could see the grass bending. I had the windows cracked 1 inch each side. The drive was 97% hyw with only the last two miles to home on city streets. I achieved 60.7mpg with cc on the whole way! wow! A great start to a tank and my best segment yet. :)
It rained today, but I managed to keep the tank at 59.1mpg after going to work and back.
Whew!

Right Lane Cruiser 04-25-2011, 11:56 PM Fantastic!!! That's what we love to see. :D :woot:
LinuxGold 04-26-2011, 07:37 AM Good job!! A crack to greater opportunities out there!
Kilo Delta 04-26-2011, 07:53 PM Thanks.
Today I achieved a personal best, work to home segment of 60+mpg, first time past 60mpg coming from work. My tank is still at 58.6 mpg.
I have noticed considerable improvement since going to 51 psi. Also, I am becoming more familiar with my route.
I have started using a new technique. When in light traffic, after accelerating from a stop and achieving PSL, I initiate a roll in neutral, equal to the distance I accelerated for, to gain back the mpg's lost in the acceleration, and then gently back to psl.
Here is my logic:
accelerate 0 to 35mph for 500 feet at average of say 25 mpg.
roll for 500 feet at 100+mpg.
average FE for 1000 feet = 100mpg+25mpg/2=62.5mpg
I guess it is P&G.

uabcar 04-26-2011, 08:05 PM How many miles to/from work? Is it mostly highway?
Right Lane Cruiser 04-26-2011, 08:25 PM KD, you have the right idea with P&G, but your math is off. The inverse relationship messes up the way the numbers work.
Use this method instead (using distances of 1mi for simplicity of units):
(Total distance)/(Total fuel used) = 2mi/(1mi/25mpg + 1mi/100mpg) = 2mi/(5mi/100mpg) = (200/5)mpg = 40mpg
As you can see, the lower fuel economy is weighted much more heavily in the "average" and this shows why it is so hard to maintain a high fuel economy -- it doesn't take many low FE episodes to really reduce the total by a lot.
Kilo Delta 04-26-2011, 08:57 PM Thanks Sean. Your math makes better sense.
uabcar, Work to home is 23mi all city. I use mostly a non major street, psl is 35. There are a few spots on the route where there is a long slight decline and I can just roll and roll and roll..... did I mention 51 psi? more roll, roll, roll... :)
I could use a 50% hyw route but traffic is horrible, I find my mpg is better on the other route. I use this hyw route some mornings with lighter traffic but can not crack 60.

uabcar 04-26-2011, 09:31 PM Thanks for the reply. I've VERY interested in picking up a CRZ- but thus far have been somewhat underwhelmed by the MPG reports I'm seeing on CRZForum.com.
Most MT owners over there seem to be in the upper 30's to low 40's. I'm getting low-mid 40's with my regular 08 civic now so these reports are not very compelling.
Your reports are encouraging though. If a 'non-Wayne' (ie. Me) can get 55-60mpg along my typical route to work (which sounds like yours only shorter @ 9miles) then it would be worth the challenge.
No way if makes financial sense- but for me its more about the new challenge than then $ savings.
Please keep up posted as you continue to drive the car. btw- how many miles do you have on it now?
Kilo Delta 04-26-2011, 10:16 PM about 8000 mi. I think it is finally breaking in. When I bought the car I joined this forum. I have been steadily improving, and managed mid 40's even in the Dallas winter. I have never had a tank less than 40 mpg in this car, worst tank 41.24 mpg. Now with 51 psi I can get 50 mpg in the city for a tank.
I think it is a great car. I am very happy with it.
I have been to crzform too, and those guys seem more interested in bolt on turbos and hp than mpg, but it is a good place for info on the car.
I considered posting pic of my current tank average at 58.6 with 175 mi just to see the reaction, but I like it here better. :)

Seraph 05-06-2011, 07:13 AM Aaawww **** a manual hybrid, a hypermiler's dream xD
Good job, i hope the manual transmission never dies!

I'd still suggest posting there. They might be mainly modders but it's still somewhere CR-Z owners might go out of interest. Even if they don't stay there it can act as the a pointer to here.
At PriusChat there's an eclectic mix of "just drive it", "mod it", "sensible" and "hypermiler". Many of us Prius owners here post there too.
uabcar 05-06-2011, 07:59 AM I agree. Additionally, I'll note that the CRZ-forum is comprised of a very civil and congenial bunch. There is none of the useless childish banter I have to wade through on the civic forums.
My two favorite car forums in fact are this one and crzforum.com (ecomodder is very good as well- just not enough time in the day....). I spend very little time on 8thcivic these days.
Kilo Delta 05-08-2011, 01:57 PM OK, the tank is done. The rest of it was spent on commuting to work and back. It ended at 9.83 gal for 543mi with 55.23mpg. Best one yet! :)
As a further bonus I can now get 60+ on my return from work to home regularly.
I went to ecomodder too, it's a cool site, but now I'm thinking of wheel skirts and perhaps an alternate to the passenger mirror!?!?!?
