Welcome back to the last week of April!! I hope everyone had a Happy Easter!

I'm working from home again today so no numbers.

The national price for a gallon of regular gas is up another 3 cents from this time last week.

Go get 'em, folks!! Time to save some fuel. :)

not too bad driving with no ima, but i miss autostop. besides that my number aren't that bad considering.

70.9- 5.1 to work. had to go to the second level of the garage and that prolly cost me a mpg or two.

72.8- 5.1 miles home. made my usual left turn and was mosying along at 34-35 mph when i saw a car coming closer and closer. How Cose you ask? he was so close i could see his headlighhts through the glass in the bottom of the hatch.i signaled well before my street and as i turn and as he zoomed past I heard this " f-you your f'ing treehugger"

tank sitting at 74.0- 145 miles and still 20 bars on the fuel guage. I figure another day or so and that first bar will fall.

Traveled in wife's scenic this week-end.

Got 59.1mpg @50.4mph avg Saturday with family and full cargo.
Got 58.0mpg @48.5mph avg Monday with wife and half cargo.

In fact Yesterday I switched on the wipers 2 mi before the final toll and 2 mi after the toll, ie 6mi before home, everybody slowed down as the rain was so strong. Several motorcycle were stopped under each bridge. The last part of the road is in my daily commute, but never saw the road with so much water on it. I was happy to not be on the highway at that moment. These last 6mi were driven @25mph max and killed my result :( before the last toll I certainly had higher mpg & mph.
At least this week my wife and I are a just married couple without child ;)

The last insult I received is "full of hairs" from a bus driver that was trying to take my place in my lane (at very slow speed).

Fun : I'm listening f*ck U by Lily Allen on the radio now :)

I'm sorry you had to hear that, Mike. :( Not cool.

I had some pretty terrible driving conditions today. :p

46F (41F windchill), 11mph cross/tailwind from the NE, raining with lots of standing water on the roads:

96.8mpg for 15.0mi (Home to work)

The tank is now down to 104.3mpg over 292.1mi

The conditions won't be any better on the way back home and that wind will be right into my passenger front quarterpanel. :(

79.4 / 10.5 home last night.
70.1 / 12.8 this morning.

I had a guy in a truck roar past me on a 35mph residential, up to the stop sign. He stopped and got out and ranted at me about the "thirty #@$%#@$ five limit". I was going about 30, he was going at least 40. If he was in such a hurry, why did he take the time to stop and get out?

Tank is at 76.3 mpg / 49 miles.

I've noticed a lot of people being far more aggressive. Of course it could be that I was one of those people 2 weeks ago.

Not here.

May be because the CEO of Total (biggest French petroleum company) told 2 weeks ago that gasoline will be at 2€/L (10.6$/gal) "soon" when it went over 1.5€/L lately. People are happy that they could have to pay more and so continue to spend more and more...

I have the feeling more and more people are driving slowly and more often I'm slowed down by people going more slowly than I'm :) But fast people are always as fast so the difference between slow and fast is increasing :(

Weather stunk today!:( I had my appointment at the temp agency this morning. The temperature was 60F and wind was SSW@ 20-25 mph with gusts to 35 mph. On the way there, I had primarily a tailwind and, not being familiar with where I was going and missing a turn that required a turn-around, I blew a potential 100 mpg and ended with 94.0 over 17.7 miles. Then on the way home, the fun started.:p I not only had the headwind, Mother Nature decided to be mean and added light to moderate rain and wet roads.:( That, coupled with a short 3 mile segment in the rain for the weld test, I ended the day with a weak 80.1 over 37.7 miles for the day.:o

when i had my lil incident it was on a 2 lane road coming up to my street. it was less than a half a mile to my street. I'm still waiting for someone at work to ask me what kind of mileage i am getting. :D

todays numbers

71.4- 5.2 miles to work. still running on the 12 volt battery. had a lil scare when i was sitting at a light and i shut down and it wouldn't restart:eek: i put my flashers on and waved car in back around me. it' did eventualy catch but i was like Oh man now what?!

Even when it does start with the 12volt battery it buzzes first then turns over.

73- 5.1 miles home. hot out and was hoping that would help me some.

I came home and reconnected the bcm to see what kind of numbers i can get now.

Oh and check this out too!! The guy got the title in finaly from his bank and asked how the lil "go cart" was doing :p I told him about the light and he was kinda shocked and generaly concerned. He said he would help me out and make things right. :woot:

Right now the soc is at a full 20 bars. when i got the cod read the ground wire got pulled out. I climbed underneath and reconnected it and now can keep assit locked out untill i am in third gear.

Sean or Larry: what is your normal bettery soc? right now i have 20 bars showing and i guess since so high i get no regen on decel or braking.

diamondlarry
04-26-2011, 04:38 PM
Mike, lost of the time, I'm at 19-20 bars. Today as I pulled into the drive I was at 20. There are times when it drops to 18 but that is usually if I've forgotten to disable assist with the CalPod switch before 3rd gear.:o I too have had instances of the 12-volt starter not wanting to engage when I experimented with turning the pack off at the breaker.

Right Lane Cruiser

My numbers going home were just as bad as I had feared they would be. A heavy headwind coupled with traffic and lots of standing water made slogging through ridiculously difficult. It was bad enough that I decided to just take the shorter, more congested route through Anoka the last 3 miles to minimize the impact to my day average (my normal bypass adds a good 0.4mi or so).

43F (35F windchill), 17-23mph headwind from the N, wet roads and raining:

81.7mpg for 14.9mi (Work to home :ccry:)

The tank is now down to 102.9mpg over 307.0mi

Day Total: 88.5mpg over 30.0mi

Mike and Larry, my SoC is normally around 19 bars when I have a lot of headlights/wiper action and 20 when I can get away from that and use key FAS instead of my FAS button. If your starter doesn't engage immediately you might have a weak 12V battery -- which can cause other issues with the car.

Mike, if you go far enough into the 20th bar it won't allow regen. Do you still get assist? If the IMA light is on the computers may disallow assist/regen. When mine went on that's what happened for me, though it would still start using the high voltage battery.

lxmike
04-26-2011, 06:19 PM
When i diconnected the bcm i got a check engine light and the ima light. now that i reconencted it they are both out. I took a drive and it started out lil above half and there was 4 bars of steady regen as i drove and slowly would pick up a bar or 2 then kept going till was at 20. regen dropped out once it picked up a few bars.

Windchill?? geesh Sean! we're getting close to turning on the ac down here!! :p

I wondered about that when my starter was acting goofy but my battery is supposed to be less than 2 years old according to the meticulous dealer records the owner kept. What other types of issues will it cause? I may need to look into the possibility the 12-volt aged prematurely in the Arizona heat before I got it.

Hi, Larry -- if the battery is marginal the DC-DC converter will run more often to try to top it up. This will cause lower FE because the high voltage battery will need charging more often. If the 12V gets marginal enough you can start having spurious engine codes... right up and including an IMA light. Odd and intermittent issues have many times been traced to a so so 12V battery.

diamondlarry
04-26-2011, 08:52 PM
Hmm, sounds like I may want to go through those receipts and check the date on that battery and maybe take it to my son's shop and have it tested. Maybe an Optima is in order?:)

Right Lane Cruiser
04-27-2011, 12:11 AM
I've heard that the car's electronics are tuned to the 12V chemistry to an extent so I've been hesitant to just though a big Yellow Top in there like I did with the Elantra. It may have more capacity but it will also require more from the DC-DC converter to fill it. That's why I stuck with a standard battery (well, not that tiny one the car came with -- a Civic battery) and added the FAS button with DC-DC enable. A good initial charge and then using the FAS button when I want to coast in conditions that would drag the 12V down has kept mine in good shape.

Guessgauge is @3/4 which I interpret as 20L used. Trip odo is @633.3km. This gives 3.16L/100 = 74.5MPG = 240% which is my record. This is certainly optimistic...
21L for 633.3km is 3.32L/100 = 70.9MPG = 229% which is my last tank.

Current week and next one are holidays, so lighter traffic :) I hope to be able to do my best.

Anyway as Ludo (my son) is with his grandpa this week, I don't need the rear seats and I removed them at noon. Sad I didn't thought about it Yesterday... Next week he is at home, but will stay with his grandma, so I will not have to put the rear seats soon :) This little help will be welcome as I'll have to beat my record to equal Andrew's current POE. The glides are a little bit shorter, but the pulses are faster : I have to be more precise with my right foot to have a better control of accelerations and steady speeds.

Have fun,

Tank is 66mpg @ 414 miles (hairline below half of tank)

Yesterday I was talking with two of my co workers about my mpg -- they were in disbelief when I told them I went 92 mpg to wawa. One of them owns Civic, still wouldn't believe that I went 60 mpg+ on my Civic. They think I drive too slow, ok so be it, I thought.

Anyway one of them lives near where I live in Elkton, this morning she approached behind me when I was GLIDING down from 45mph delta 10. Here is my opportunity to show my hypermiling skill, I decided to switch to High speed P&G, going up to 55 delta 10 (psl was 50). After I went over the bridge, I turned right around and under bridge into shorter route, went 45 max with delta of 10, she went straight, accelerated up to how fast she can possibly go. I eventually pulled up in FRONT of her, she approached me very very fast, and I resumed my high speed P&G all the way until we both got to Middletown, so she decided to follow me.

I turned right behind Walmart (25 psl), she went ahead all the way around because psl was 45 there. She got ahead of me, of course, and went to stop light fast, of course. When she stopped, I turned right and glided ALL THE WAY up to her car WHILE red light was turning green, I didn't touch the brakes at all approached so close to her car, she just jolted off up to the psl of 40 work. I switched to 40mph delta 15 all the way to work. :Banane27:

She was getting out of her van when I parked behind her. I showed her my Scangauge -- she was amazed on how we can save gas and still go pretty fast.

I am picking on her all the day LONG about this. ;)

What does she think about having to follow someone doing P&G ?

Here slower people are accepted if there is potential to bypass, but people doing P&G aren't accepted as much. May be because people doesn't see more far than what they can avoid by braking hard and someone doing P&G is entering, leaving, entering, leaving... their field of view.

Denis,

I sent her an email about this, I'll let you know as soon as I receive her reply.

But at same time on that highway at a lot of times, they tend to tailgate then flashed the headlights at me. The highway is 2 way lane (one way each side), so there is no bypass, just a shoulder with wake-up ripples (ugh).

That is why I am currently looking for different route, so far found good alternatives. The biggest problem is the highway from Elkton to that bridge in Chesapeake City, there is no other way around.

Tried a couple times to restart it but couldn't

Even I'm having fun again. I got an alignment last Friday which was sorely needed. It has been pushing 80 the past couple of days and I'm seeing 58mpg on the MFD, even after a couple of segments that should have been lousy thanks to traffic and failure to time most of the lights. This is a promising start to the driving season. I'm starting to think that at 80,000mi this car might finally be breaking-in. :D

Good timing, too. My next fillup is likely to be my first ever at over $4.00/gal.

I have at least a temporary job where my wife works. In preparation for that, I went and filled up the Insight tonight as it has been on 3 bars for a couple of days. When I went, it started to lightly sprinkle on the way then, an unexpected detour due to road construction forced me onto about 2 miles of city streets and added about that much to my route. I ended up with 87.8 over 10.8 miles. On the way home, I went a different route that still had some city streets but, due to starting with a warmer engine and, the FE bump from filling up for the first few miles, I ended up with 106.9 mpg by the time I traveled the 9 miles back to my driveway but lost 1 mpg while backing in the drive.:( Tank is at 105.9 over 9 miles.

Here is her reply to my email that I sent yesterday.

Scott,
It’s a bit frustrating driving behind you because you speed up & sustain the speed just long enough for me to think that we’re going good/ I set my cruise control…. Then you start to slow down & coast which means by the time I notice means I’m stepping on the break instead of coasting right along w/ you. I worry when I see you coasting on the side of the road because merging back in can be so dangerous, but on rt.213 traffic does travel in packs so maybe it’s not so bad.

I think this form of driving works on back roads where there’s not too much traffic, but on I-95 it would be a different story. Do any of your hypermiler friends have success w/ a highway commute & saving gas??

We are only about an hour apart -- yeah, nasty weather...

I drive down to the Columbia area each day from North of Bel Air. My kids' school was locked down this morning for a tornado warning.

Whoa, an hour drive away! How do you hypermile through those crazy highways?

Well, I'm really new to it. I think I'm doing ok. My morning commute isn't bad, I'm at work by 6:30. The afternoon one can be pretty bad. Morning is usually around 50 minutes, afternoon is usually 1:10 but has been horrible at times.

I am sure you will figure this one out. I drove from Elkton, MD to Hagerstown on I-70 and managed to do 145% of EPA on my now-retired 1993 Toyota Camry V-6 Auto.

It would be nice to have Toyota Prius -- it excels with heavy traffic at low speeds and a lot of stops too.

Yesterday afternoon, driving to sitters and back home, 87 degrees, crosswind S 15, G28-32
51.7 MPG / 20.3 mi

This morning, several severe thunderstorm warnings and a tornado warning later (tornado spotted 10 miles away, near my sitter's home, on an elementary school soccer field)
More of the storm damage was north and south of my home and the center of town/FSU campus area, thankfully, but nothing like Alabama yesterday :ccry:

73 calm winds, clear skies, traffic was up this morning, families in town for graduation that don't know their way around town, driving erratically and stopping randomly

44.7 MPG / 6.4 mi

Scott, a number of us have good success on the highway. I use P&G there, too -- timed to coincide with traffic waves, carefully timed lane changes to find gaps, hills to help maintain speed a little more consistently while still gliding long distances, and an average speed low enough that most people simply switch lanes to go around me well before reaching my position.

National average for a gallon of regular gas today is $3.91 and rising!

I've got the day off today.

I hate working the 11:30-8 shift! I have to make a left turn out of my street to get to work. I go right and take a loop around the block and that what the extra distance is sometimes. still learning what works for me and my short trips.

70.2 - 7.4 to work. temp was 85 degrees when i left for work. had to climb to second level of parking garage and that almost kept me in the 69mpg zone. :p

you know your a hypermiler when you complain you only could manage 69 mpg. :D

coming home was different story. i got a nice roll and could coast all the way to the guard shack to tuern in the kitchen keys. fcd was maxed out at 150mpg for the 1/4 mile i coasted. had some traffic behind me but they never got close enough to worry if i was holding them up.

78.7 - 5.1 miles home. working the fas techinique. sometime i rush it and key back on too quick and the engine restarts. :o oh well at least now i can fas and not worry about an auto tranny now. :D

Indeed it does Scott. A few years ago, I was on my way home to Wakarusa, IN from Wayne's house north of Chicago in my Prius. As I approached the city limits, I was at an even 70 mpg on...the highway. I then encountered a fairly nasty traffic jam that lasted until well after the ball park in The Loop(several miles). As I got to to where I-57 splits from I-94, I had increased to 72.8 mpg. I love my Insight for open highway mileage but, in a traffic jam, the Prius will eat the Insight's lunch and pop the bag.:p:D

Only if it includes full stops with almost no glide distances between. I often punch my numbers up another 5-8mpg in congestion.

To home yesterday
70F 3SW (cross/tail) RAIN:

72.2/19.2 miles (.26 Gallon)

To work
55F 4W (cross/tail) clear:

63.4/18.5 miles (.29 Gallon)

Found alternative route to use -- skipped ~3 STEEP hills, and 3 to 4 miles less too!

Tank is 66.4 mpg @ 512 miles (1/4 left on the gauge)

Have you tried Baltimore/Washington highway during rush hours?

Hi, Scott -- no I haven't but I have been on I-94 between St. Cloud and Minneapolis during rush hour... something I hope I never have to do again. The posted limit there is 70mph for part of the distance but the traffic was all traveling a minimum of 84mph... and cutting me off with inches to spare. The last time I saw that behavior was the DC beltway. It was so bad that when I tried to ridge ride they actually used half of my lane while passing and trying to take my bumper off.

In some situations you really do have to abandon all pretense of efficiency for the sake of safety (what little can be eked out in circumstances like that, anyway ). I should note though that this particular experience is one of only two in my years of hypermiling that forced me to give up all techniques completely. If it isn't safe, DON'T DO IT.

I'm working from home today after staying up late to receive Mike Sefton at my house for a brief rest before taking him to the airport for that F-150 drive across the US. The punch drunk feeling will go away eventually, I think. :p

yesterday was not to bad :D

25.8 / 13.4 miles
26.5 / 13.0 miles
total was 26.1 / 26.4 miles

today with nasty head winds on the way home
24.9 / 13.2 miles
25.4 / 13.2 miles (S@25 gusting to 35)
total was 25.1 / 26.4 miles

Tank is down to 1/8 on the gauge (18% left) and 433.2 miles (guessing around 23.9 for tank MPG)

I had the Insight out for a little cruise last night. My daughter needed a ride to her friend's house and, the trip was on mostly county roads.:) Due to a couple of hiccups withing the first 2 blocks, I ended up with 97.7 for the 8.5 miles there. The trip back was much better despite a very mild headwind (approx. 5 mph). I had 105.2 for 8.5 miles(more FAS time;) ) back. The temperature was 62F. Overall, I had 101.3 over 16.9 miles. Today's weather is looking pretty good with low 70's but could be a bit on the breezy side.

I told my son last night that if I can learn to drive my Insight with the same regard to tailgaters and the like, I would be able to approach Sean-like levels of FE.:p:D

Thanks Sean. I just noticed that I messed up on the length of the trip home. Should have been 8.4 miles instead of 8.5. Got to get a FAS switch someday.;) Would be nice if it could be done as simply as it was on my son's Saturn.

Readjusted scangauge.

Will put in last two tanks in mileage log tonight since I am reporting from droid 2 now. Driving long distance too.

oh saturday not so good!:( had a negatibe recal going to work and been fighting it since then. dropepd down to 4 bars and had the 4 bars of constant regen to work against me.

saturdays's numbers

63.2- 5.1 to work. <sigh>

67.3 - 7.4 miles home. took lil longer route to get a lil charge in the ole battery.

sundays numbers

83.4 - 7.2 miles to work. got enough back into the battery pack to stop the constant regen and that helped me break 80 :p

83.6- 10.0 miles home.

again I took a lil longer route during the daylight hours to get some back into the battery pack. sitting at 15 bars of soc.

Tank currently sitting at 73.5 - 233.2 miles 17 bars on the fuel guage

Mike, I'm sorry to hear about your IMA troubles. :( I'm going to send you a little info in PM that might be helpful. Other than that, I recommend letting the negative recal do its thing down to the lowest level, then use the Calpod switch to disable the regen except for when you want to slow down. The switch should be effective on the upswing once you've re-attained 4 bars SoC.

05-01-2011, 06:05 PM
Sean, I'll have to remember that if i get another recal. I was doing like i always do and keep it turned on till 3rd gear the turn off so the battery could get some charge back in there.
