View Full Version : Gas pumps
MAJORWINK 04-21-2011, 12:08 AM Shell, chevron, qt, arco, etc. Is there ANY difference in quality i'm getting? I've heard ARCO sucks but then some people say that ARCO stations are just fine. The ARizona department of weights and measures does the inspections on gas stations to see that we are getting accurate gas pumping. So is arco bad???? Shell is VERY expensive so does that make it better than arco???
oddity96 04-21-2011, 10:01 AM I fill up at QT but all major brands are pretty much the same. Arco is a BP company and they use the lowest grade gas at those stations and the price listed is cash only price. the price for debit or credit is about the same as the rest. The reason i use QT is they usually have the lowest price (in the east valley) and they get their gas from the same place as the major brands with the same detergent
FSUspectra 04-21-2011, 10:57 AM In most cases, there is one refinery and distributor that provides the gas for every station in an area or region. Everyone gets the same gas, and additives are added at the truck or station level.
SentraSE-R 04-21-2011, 11:10 AM ^^^ What Brandon said. When I lived in Alaska, there was only one (Tesoro) refinery in the state, so all the oil companies sold Tesoro gas, with their own blend of additives. There's no other difference between brands.
I boycott Exxon/Mobil and BP/ARCO/Amoco for their spills, but I also boycott Shell for its human rights violations, and Chevron for its environmental policies. They're all snakes, and I apologize to snakes for that slur.
Toyotahyper88 04-26-2011, 11:14 AM Can anyone recommend good gas stations in Southern California?
CPLTECH 04-26-2011, 12:03 PM Shell is VERY expensive
I applaud all who make every attempt to make every drop of gasoline count, but don’t overlook the discount some brands give. I know some may have a grudge against certain brands or find that a certain brand in their area gives better MPG’s. But if one can control their spending when using a credit card and avoid paying interest on that month’s purchases, Shell, BP, & some others offer a 5% rebate. That figures out as 20¢ on $4 gallon. $1 on a $20 purchase (certainly not a fill-up at today’s prices). These two give a prepaid gas card when the rebate gets to at least the $25 mark (or apply it to the bill). If I happen to see a slightly higher price at Shell, I quickly calculate the price “after rebate” and Shell comes out the winner.
WARNING: Fail to pay the card off in full each month… They win
Pay the card off in full… You win !!!
My friend works near a CostCo and that membership saves him like 15¢ gal. As for Sam’s Club, it never saved me much, if any.
PaleMelanesian 04-26-2011, 12:43 PM Drive for Five
New Shell Drive for Five Card cardholders have the opportunity to earn a savings of 5 cents per gallon on all three grades of Shell Nitrogen Enriched gasoline as well as Shell diesel when they purchase at least 45 gallons each month, up to 100 gallons.
I've only bought 47 gallons so far this year. :p
ItsNotAboutTheMoney 04-26-2011, 01:10 PM I've only bought 47 gallons so far this year. :p
20000mi/(50mpg*12mo) = 33.3r gal/mo
LinuxGold 04-26-2011, 01:23 PM I've only bought 47 gallons so far this year. :p
On the Civic alone, or including Odyssey?
:p
CPLTECH 04-26-2011, 06:55 PM I've only bought 47 gallons so far this year. :p
Yes, I see where it will take you a while to get the min rebate, which can be a good thing.
You can put other items on the card to earn rebates faster. Since Shell Citi recently reduced the rate to ½ % it has become my [Shell] gas only card. But the BP [Chase] card gives 1% on other stuff, 0% on competitor’s fuel.
Just trying to stay one step ahead, but near almost impossible.
laurieaw 04-26-2011, 09:35 PM I've only bought 47 gallons so far this year. :p
hmmm, that's about what i'm using, too.
Right Lane Cruiser 04-27-2011, 12:14 AM Hm. I'm at 23.7g purchased so far this year for my car. I don't know what has been put into the FFH but I'm sure it is way less than what would have gone into that Escape the wife used to drive!
SentraSE-R 04-27-2011, 02:23 AM I just filled my tank last week, and am at 59 gallons purchased this year, but that includes an 1100 mile highway trip to SoCal.
PaleMelanesian 04-27-2011, 09:57 AM That's not including the Odyssey. :o There's a lot more going into that beast.
The shell card gives you the rebate if you buy 45 gallons per month. Even with both cars together I would fall short of that mark many months = no reward.
exbrit 05-04-2011, 09:39 PM Look for Larger Chain stores that also sell gas. I took out a credit card with a major retailer and if I use the card to buy gas at their locations, it automatically deducts 5 cents off the posted price.
Pay your credit card off in the correct time period and you got a genuine savings of 5 cents a gallon, not to be sneezed at!:)

EVuser 05-04-2011, 10:47 PM With gas at about 4.25 per gal it doesn't pay to go much out of the way burning it to save a penny or two per gallon. But the rebate cards are a good idea, especially the percentage ones.
I don't buy much fuel but when it is going up I fill the tank often and when it is going down I let it get much lower. Sort of my micro fuel hedging effort.
On "vacation" trips it pays to plan fuel stops via the internet pricing sites and hypermile to the least costly refueling plan if your into getting the most miles per dollar and not simply fill up all the time. BTW never fill up in Humboldt County, CA unless your staying there, always pricey.
I've never found much difference in fuel performance/brands, except for the addition of ethanol and MTBE, they all burn about the same for me. :flag:
greenrider 05-08-2011, 10:35 AM I've only bought 47 gallons so far this year. :p
Nice!!
greenrider 05-08-2011, 10:37 AM Perhaps someone can answer this--I'm headed to the Williamsburg, VA and outer banks of North Carolina areas in 10 days for vacation with the I2. Is non-E10 gas available anywhere down there?
livinlargeinthesun 05-11-2011, 01:37 PM I go with BP or quicktrip. I have never had a problem with their gas.
Phantom 05-12-2011, 02:19 PM GreenRider check out http://pure-gas.org/ for real gas.
tusky 05-16-2011, 10:43 AM You guys are lucky with your gas/petrol prices because over here in England the price keeps rising every week.
oldlar 05-17-2011, 12:56 PM http://pure-gas.org/ is a site that lists ethanol free gas. The issue I have is that the station nearest to me charhes about $0.50 more per gallon. It is 91 octane, but I haven't see that great of mpg improvement to justify the high cost.
