View Full Version : Suggestions to Mileage Logs
Thanks for everything first off.
Few suggestions for Mileage Logs.
- A way to link to a drivers vBGarage entry on a car from his mileage logs.
- A way to link to a drivers mileage log from his vBGarage.
- A link to a drivers mileage log and vBGarage from his public profile.
- A link to a drivers mileage log and vBGarage from the dropdown menu that happens when you click on their name header at the top of a post.
- Increase the character limit for "driving stratagy" on tank entries... just found out mine are trunkating.
Few suggestions for the site:
- FAQ (did I miss it?)- The FAQ on the bar above the flags seems more vBulliten based and less CleanMPG based. Some rules and regs about the site, history and mission, as well as a read this first, and how to get hypermiler status.
- A paypal button to donate to cleanmpg, call it "bribe your moderator".

Hi Dan:
___All I can add is that Tom eats comments like yours up and I have no doubt he is already contriving ways to make half of what you asked happen! If you could see him in person after a list of suggestions like yours was passed on, it would compare to me giving a quick table top clinic in full hypermiler mode after being asked how to improve somebody else’s FE! A certain type of passion arises I guess :)

tbaleno 03-21-2007, 05:56 PM Except I often forget what I'm supposed to do next so things get dropped ;)
I have in the past thought about how to better integrate the vbgarage with the mileage logs. Someday that will probably happen.
Also, linking your cars/mileage logs in the drop down is something I have thought of as well.
Keep suggesting and reminding me. We want to keep making this site better and suggests of what people want is more important than what Wayne and I want.
PaleMelanesian 03-23-2007, 05:36 PM What about removing or somehow separating the active entries from the inactive? Maybe after a year of no activity or something, they could be put into a separate category. I'm not sure what that would look like, but it's just an idea. Or maybe if it's less than 5000 miles and also inactive for some time... or something. That would keep Little Red Beauty on the list. ;)
How about encouraging users to make their signature image into a link to the garage? Mine is, and it's not too hard to do. Or you could add that to the dropdown list when you click the user's name.
tbaleno 03-23-2007, 05:57 PM Seperating retired vehicles from the rest is a good idea. I think it would be very cumbersome to do though. I'll put that in the back of my mind as I work on the database.
How about encouraging users to make their signature image into a link to the garage?
Brilliant! Done. Click my sig pic and you get to my Garage, click the link in my garage and you get to my mileage log... I like it.
Good suggestion, thanks.
PaleMelanesian 03-25-2007, 10:18 PM Oh! That's great! I had mine linked to the mileage log. Changed to the Garage, which links to the log. As you said, Brilliant!
efusco 04-23-2007, 10:31 AM Would it be possible to add an option where instead of listing the number of miles on a tank (ie. 500 miles) we could enter the total ODO miles as an option an then have the system calculate the tank miles by subtracting the prior ODO entry?
The reason I ask is b/c I'm too lazy to look at the prior ODO entry and subtract it from the current tank ODO reading...and about every 3rd tank or so I end up a mile off by entering the tank distance from the MFD.
IOW, when I enter the mfd miles every once in a while I notice that my total miles is off and I have to go in and edit a tank to correct the error and by entering my ODO reading that issue would go away.
tbaleno 04-23-2007, 10:50 AM Humm. What about just having the odometer reading somewhere on the tank entry page?
brucepick 04-23-2007, 11:00 AM How about showing the car's % gain over EPA Combined on the Mileage Log page?
We owners of vehicles that are EPA rated at under 30-40 mpg often take great pride in whatever we can achieve above EPA.
I'd actually prefer to see the Mileage Log default-sorted by "% gain over EPA" but I'd be glad to see it as a column on the screen.
tbaleno 04-23-2007, 11:14 AM I'll put it on my list.
efusco 04-23-2007, 04:12 PM I'll put it on my list.
To do item number 9958!!! I'll look for it next summer!
Thanks for considering it, This is clearly a fine/tuning tweak much more so than a problem.
tbaleno 04-23-2007, 04:14 PM Pretty much.
cuchulain 04-23-2007, 10:30 PM Dear Tom
Any chance of correcting %electricity used to Wh rather than W/h.
Thanks Andrew
tbaleno 04-23-2007, 10:52 PM That was an easy one. Should be fixed.
cuchulain 04-23-2007, 11:18 PM Thanks Tom
Its fixed. Great service.
Andrew
Right Lane Cruiser 04-24-2007, 06:05 PM Tom, I was just noticing that when I try to sort my mileage logs by any of the columns available it tells me "This Profile has no Tanks" and no other data...
Is this something that hasn't been implemented yet? I'm not desperate for it (of course!!) but it would be nice to have...
tbaleno 04-24-2007, 08:01 PM Try it now.
Right Lane Cruiser 04-24-2007, 11:48 PM VERY nice. Thank you!:)

Just a bump-reminder. I really like this idea.
SSixty 08-09-2007, 03:22 PM I went back and updated my avgTemps in my mileage logs (as per HCHCIN's thread re wunderground.com) and it ended up being rather tedious. Click my car's log, Click tank, make change, Click Save, and repeat.
Not a big deal, and not a problem for me now, but for anyone else wishing to edit several tanks - perhaps. Would you consider adding another button next to 'Add another tank' maybe called 'Edit another tank' which simply brings you right back to the car's log to select another tank to edit?
Joe
tbaleno 08-09-2007, 04:00 PM Sounds like a good idea.
Shiba3420 09-11-2007, 04:37 PM Its already been said and 2nd, but I'd like to add a 3rd....%EPA MPG so that the list can be more competitive for those who like that sort of thing.
Hm, well a couple of things: I've just now noticed that clicking on a person's ID takes you to the 'profile' page... I've uploaded a couple of pics but can't seem to make heads or tails of the rest of the blocks. I wanted to link the 'mileage retriever' to my mileage but couldn't find the car's ID anywhere. In the end I found it in the URL when you click on the car in the Mileage logs. Kind of user-un-friendly :(
Also, when I first joined up and added my car to the mileage logs, I chose L/100 Km as the default view. I'd like to change it to MPG but can't find where to change this, I have to select it every time I go to the mileage logs...
desdemona 09-12-2007, 11:15 PM Ok, this has more to do with looking at the files but it would be cool to be able to sort them. For instance, sort by transmission type, liter engine, brand/model, etc.

I've posted a few threads on the CO2 cost (absolutely worse possible case coal scenario) of a kWh of electricity. I figure it comes out to somewhere between 2-10 oz of gasoline GHG-wise. There are wildly varying cost analysis of earth-to-outlet GHG emmisions for 1 kWh as well as cost analysis of well-to-wheel GHG emissions for a gallon of gas.
Suffice to say that 1 kWh = ? oz of petroleum CHG-wise (where ? is between 2-10).
I think it cool would be if we could put in kWh consumed (already there) and a conversion factor (not yet there) so that we can calculate MPG equivalent. As more and more people get a PHEV, it would be nice to have a way to compare efficiencies.
An example would be if I burned 10gal of gas and 50 kWh of electricity over a span of 1500 miles my MPG would be 150 MPG, but if I factored in the 50 kWh using a conversion factor of ? = 10 then it would be closer to 107 MPG. That way my numbers don't skew as badly if I get lots of plug in trips.

Hi Dan:
___A bit OT … Oh how any of us would die to drive a mid-sized 4-door at 107 all-in or 150 mpg the old fashion way minus the electricity costs ;) No matter how we slice it, the PHEV’s are going to kick all our @$$’es and thank goodness they will too!

You can do that already. If it doesn't work then it is broke, but in theory it should work. Have you tried it? It converts electricity to mpg using the same calculation as the government does I believe. (It has been over a year since I wrote that bit of code so I don't remember the details).
MnFocus 11-17-2007, 11:28 AM I was wondering if the column 'headers' could be made user selectable? ie I drive a gas powered vehicle but yet all the ev vehicle info has to be waded through to make/read an entry. It may be something simple such as allowing a user to toggle the headers.

I don't think I'd die ...but I would be in my own lil heaven with such a choice .

I intend on doing it that way. If anyone is familiar with the standings page on www.mlb.com, what they do/did is what I have always planned on. Toggle off and on which columns you want to see.
MnFocus 11-19-2007, 09:22 PM :) Good deal then ...I'm glad to not be alone with that thought. I'll be patient ;)
Devinator 02-01-2008, 03:16 PM Hi, I am kind of new here and have only logged a few tanks in the mileage logs. It looks like the system calculates the combined EPA estimate by averaging the city and highway estimates which is not always the same as the combined EPA estimate. For example my car gets 18 city and 24 highway which the mileage logs calculate to be 21, but the EPA combined estimate is 20. So instead of saying 128.22% of combined EPA, my signature should say 134.63%. Maybe you could change it so members could manually enter the combined EPA estimate when they add their car to the garage.
Thank you
Hi Devinator:
___What shows up in your sig s the 85-07 EPA city/highway but we calc your actual FE as a % against a 50/50 mix vs. the EPA’s 45/55% mix. When looking at the real world, there is no way to actually come up with a mix as every singe persons commute is different from the EPA’s mix even if (2) members were neighbors and worked at the same building for the same company. The vehicles will never follow the same path as one goes to get grocery’s or the HW store and the other drives to pick up videos. Tom and I were having discussions about this before the Mileage DBase was built and decided to make it simple for everyone by using a 50/50 split vs. the actual to calculate your %’s.
___You can enter in whatever EPA numbers you want as it can be overridden but please enter in the 85 – 07 other then those owning the 08’s for now as we have two separate criteria for the older models vs. the 08’s and later.
___Good Luck

Devinator 02-01-2008, 04:36 PM That makes sense. Thanks Wayne
PaleMelanesian 03-03-2008, 05:27 PM About the much-requested "sort by %epa" feature, what about just making the Status column sortable? El(ite) comes before Ex(pert) comes before S(killed). That should be a quick change to implement, right?
nhbubba 03-18-2008, 10:00 AM Forgive me if this has been asked and answered already, but I am striking out w/ the search feature. Quite frankly I'm not even sure what terms to use when searching.
I am meticulous about keeping a fuel log for my vehicles. I have a log of nearly every drop of fuel run through my current vehicles as well as over 2 years of data for my previous vehicle. I keep a pen and paper log in each vehicle that is updated at each fill-up. Periodically I manually enter this data into an MS Excel spreadsheet. I would like to contribute this data to the cleanmpg.com database, however I have literally several hundred tank entries. Is there a way to import or enter a large number of 'tanks' at a time?
In my pen & paper log I keep date, total cost of fill-up, total volume of fuel pumped, and current odometer reading. From this I can calculate (and export) date, volume, change in mileage, and cost/volume of the fuel.
Thanks..
Hi Nhbubba:
___I wish I had better news. Tom built a conversion for some types of web based data but not a straight up spreadsheet and into the DBase unfortunately :( It is back to the manual entry method for now.

nd4speed7 03-19-2008, 05:55 PM Could the EPA standards be calculated on the % city/highway driving? My last tank was completely city so it makes my mileage look worse since I couldn't make it to my cars average.
Hi Nd4speed7:
___If we were to include that adjustment, nobody could be compared to anybody. Even the EPA locks down the combined at 45/55% split whereas we lock it down to 50/50. In the city you should achieve higher FE than on the highway as long as it is not miles and miles of stop and crawl from light to light type stuff as can be found in many areas of Chicago, LA, San Francisco, New York City etc. That one will more than likely not be changed as we all hold ourselves and each other accountable to our car’s EPA combined.

fitmpg 03-19-2008, 08:59 PM I often wish there was an area where one could define the type of driving most often done with their vehicle- I'm a good example: I drive my vehicle exclusively (almost) for work purposes and very nearly all my miles are of the highway and secondary road variety (and the terrain I drive is most often gently rolling hills and flat surfaces), therefore, my totals may be substantially higher than someone driving the same vehicle in other-than-optimal conditions. I guess one could put that information in the box provided for an individual tank too...
Thank you,
brian:woot:
Hi Brian:
___I include notes with most of my tanks in the space provided. You cannot write a book but there is enough space for details to sort out what is going on in most cases. More work on your part however if the % city/highway is not enough.

lamebums 03-20-2008, 09:07 PM Is it possible to make MPG a sortable column the same way date or city driving is? That way with the click of a button you could quickly find someone's (or your own) best and worst tanks.
Import capability.
If http://www.fueleconomy.gov/ surely we can do it as well. I also noticed a few years ago that the kWh didn't seem to function when calculating MPG. Does it give a kWh to Gal equivalency?

nerys 04-26-2008, 03:47 AM Is there a limit of 2 Vehicles? I tried adding my Jeep and it will not let me. IE I click send and it goes to the page I expect but NO jeep? I see my other two but not the jeep I tried adding it again No joy???
Right Lane Cruiser 04-26-2008, 12:02 PM There shouldn't be a limit. There are several people around here with 3 separate logs for vehicles...

11011011I'm with Dan. I use a tracking software and can export. That's the only place I do individual log entries (other than my paper log).
nerys 04-29-2008, 12:55 AM Really odd when I got home it let me add the third vehicle either it was just being goofy it it was FF3 Beta being goofy :-)
mintsk8er 05-04-2008, 07:11 AM Been said before, but as a reminder, I'd like to see an easy way to links to a member's mileage logs for each of their vehicles in their profile. It's tedious to search through the mileage logs for a particular person's vehicle.
Vooch 05-04-2008, 10:06 AM 1) inactive (say after 12 mths) moved to different table - this will become significant because, CleanMPG is getting lots of press and in 12 months is likely to have 5-6,000 members
2) have a fourth category (elite w/ oak leaves ? ) which would kick in after, say, 50,000 miles. This would grant those 140%+ long term drivers the special status they deserve.
