Further evidence that intermediate technology is not always trivial. --Ed.

Nobody, it seems, can be perfect.

Take those who buy the Chevrolet Volt. Even the greenest of green drivers can't make it run without gasoline.

Stay within the car's electric-only range each day. Be as light as possible on the accelerator.

You'll still burn fossil fuel.

It's a simple fact of chemical and mechanical life.

If you fill a car with gasoline and then let the stuff sit in the tank for a long time, moisture and oxygen will degrade it.

The gasoline will also evaporate. Conventional gas tanks deal with this by capturing the vapours in a charcoal filter and sending them on to the engine. But in the Volt, there's nowhere to send this material if the engine doesn't run.

And if you don't use an internal-combustion engine for months, chances are it won't run well when you eventually need it.... http://www.thestar.com/wheels/article/956091--electric-car-tech-sparks-quirky-problems-and-remedies
