View Full Version : Stop Safely Now
councilman 02-28-2011, 11:21 AM I have a 2007 Ford Escape hybrid with 48900 miles.
Went on a road trip and got about 30 miles away from my almost 400 mile destination and received the Stop Safely Now. Stopped the vehicle and restarted a few times and made it to our destination. It sat overnight and the rest of the time at my destination I had no problems. I changed the air filter for the battery cooling system and headed back home. 300 miles into my return trip I again received the Stop Safely Now. I would stop for a while restart the vehicle and would make it for a little while and get the Stop Safely Now again.
It seemed when I put the rear windows down and air was flowing through the car that I would not get the stop safely now. Coincidental?
As a side note Ford bought back our 2005 FEH because they couldnt fix it with the same Stop Safely Now error. I feel like and idiot.
Right Lane Cruiser 02-28-2011, 12:11 PM That is odd! What ambient temperatures were you dealing with?
Hi Councilman:
We have an individual that owns an 07 IIRC that had that indication come up and it was the Electric Water Pump both times. His did not come up until well beyond the warranty for the first and after another 100,000 for the second just recently. It was not an inexpensive repair unfortunately either :(
While I do not know if that is what you are experiencing exactly, the symptoms sure do match what Jesse has experienced a number of times. His just started doing it again about 3-weeks ago and the Ford garage said it’s the electric water pump again. The second time, not the third. He is still driving it while his non-Ford mechanic tries to source a cheaper replacement than the $800 job that Ford provides.
Good Luck

Here in California its been unseasonably cold.

So the fact the the red triangle with the exclamation point in the middle comes on tells me in the manual that it is a the hybrid portion of the vehicle. The water pump your refering to is part of the hybrid system?
msirach 02-28-2011, 01:05 PM You might try going to an Autozone or similar auto parts store and have them read the code. Their reader may not give the proper definition. Let us know what that code is and that could reveal the problem. It could be something minor.
It's very strange that you have gotten the same code on two different Escapes.
Do you have blankets, towel, toolboxes or anything else stored in the storage or rear seat area?
Do you have any sort of pest problem like mice, chipmunks or ground squirrels?
Hi Councilman:
Yes, the electric water pump is indeed part of the Hybrid system and unfortunately very expensive to replace. Jesse will be by to tell you all about his experience. In fact, I think he already did in a past a week or two ago describing this exact situation.
In any case, take it into Ford and have them diagnose.

councilman 02-28-2011, 05:29 PM Anyone think it could be the blend door actuator. It seems as though it has something to do with the HV Battery cooling system. Just a guess. I'm working on getting the codes.
I've been driving the car around town today with no problems. Like I wrote earlier only after driving hundreds of miles did the indicator come on.
councilman 02-28-2011, 06:13 PM Just drove around a bit and seems like the radiator fan is on constantly. Can anyone explain to me about the HV battery cooling system? From what I've read on different forums the blend door closes when the battery temp hits 85 and then the A/C thats specifically for the HV battery kicks in and the door remains closed. Would any of the cooling of the HV battery cause the radiator fan to continue to blow?
councilman 02-28-2011, 06:24 PM msirach
Yes we had luggage in back on the way there. I put luggage in back seat on way back and and took carpet off battery to make sure. Also the battery a/c filter was dirty I had the service wrench light go off. I changed the filter at our destination. Havnt seen service wrench light except for that one time right before we left.
councilman 02-28-2011, 06:26 PM Just ordered the scangauge II should have by end of the week. AutoZone in my area dosnt do codes.
councilman 02-28-2011, 06:49 PM Can someone also tell me whats NOT included in the hybrid portion of the 8 year 80,000 mile warranty. I've been reading were ford is not covering certain parts of the hybrid portion of the vehicle.
msirach 02-28-2011, 07:32 PM Is it possible that you had some of the venting covered by luggage? That has been an issue in Honda's before.
Hi Councilman and Mike:
This is not an issue to be guessing what it could be. If it is that dreaded electric water pump and many have failed on Ford Escape Hybrids in the past (see Jesse's story from a week or two back), you are sitting on a vehicle that can and eventually will go dead. Guessing or waiting for it to happen again is something to be avoided as the next time, it may be finished for good.

GaryG 02-28-2011, 08:06 PM There are two electric pumps under the radiator, one is the larger MEC pump which sounds like the problem. The other is a smaller heater pump which operates when you're in EV because the belt driven water pump is off with the engine. I've read post that the dealer changed the wrong pump so make sure you get the pump that cools the eCVT and DC/DC converter. First check to see if the MEC pump is not running while parked in EV.
If my MEC pump goes bad, I'd order one from a site like this: http://www.fastoemparts.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=214455 and install it myself and save a lot of money. There are two bolts that hold the pump on and two hose clamps. Just unplug the electrical harness, drain the coolant at the hoses, bolt on the new pump, refill the coolant and plug the harness back. If you can't check the pump or install a new pump if bad, find someone who can just change the parts much cheaper than the stealerships.
When this pump stops working the eCVT electric motors get hot and shut off in the failed safe mode. Also, the engine overheats after a while because of the electric motor assist stops.

councilman 03-02-2011, 08:43 PM Ok. Think I may have just messed up. Im able to drive around town and I got a flat tire so I replaced two tires and they cleared the indicator. Does that mean I lost the codes that I need to get for my stop safely now? My scanguage II dosnt arrive until next tues.
Thanks GaryG! Do you think that pump wouldnt give me a problem until 300 miles into a trip? Twice!? Wierd. Your help is MUCH appreciated.
300kmileprius 03-04-2011, 11:28 AM I suspect the people at Ford or at least your dealer are complete fu$%&*g morons. Wayne is probably right that it is the electric water pump. This happened to my 2005 FEH at about 100k like Wayne said and again around 205k. The second time I went to an independent mechanic and paid only 450 instead of nearly twice that at ford. Ford has been FU%$^ng people from day one on this. I know of many other instances where this has happened before 100k. Example, I tested a 2005 FEH for my friend's dad and the triangle came on and stop safely now. They determined it was the electric water pump and it was replaced before the purchase took place at 77k miles. I will never buy another ford as my 05 FEH with 208k now is not nearly as reliable as my 2005 prius with 258.5k. I have not done any repairs to that car at all. The FEH was puchased at 86,800 miles and the prius was purchased shortly later at 84,354 miles. An interesting experiment but ford has a long long way to go. Full comparison story coming soon.

Who cleared the codes? Did they try to read them before clearing them?
councilman 03-04-2011, 08:07 PM Got my ScanGauge II today! Can someone point me to what I need to do with it in regards to this thread?
@CarlD Not sure the codes were cleared. The indictor regarding the tire that you can read on the dash was cleared. Wasnt sure if that meant the codes were cleared as well.
I've been reading a bunch of stuff on this Stop Safely Now all over the internet and the only thing that seems to be different in my case is the length of time it takes to get the warning. Does this make since to anyone? Why would it take so long around 300 miles of highway driving, to get this error? And now I can drive with no Stop Safely Now.
CarlD 03-04-2011, 11:43 PM This thread has info on getting the module-specific DTCs that the SCAN function won't find:
http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21291
I doubt any codes were cleared unless they had a fairly high-level scan tool or a properly set-up scan gauge...

councilman 03-05-2011, 02:30 PM Update:
Have driven a total of 10 mile today with no problems. No "Stop Safely Now" and everything seems fine. No problems since we have been back from our road trip last sunday. I'm just nervous to take it on any long trips now.
CarlD
Thanks for the link
When i hit scan It says "No Codes Found -Ready-"
Ok playing with the scangauge II went to the link you sent me CarlD. Created the xgauge. I went back to main menu went to gauge, scrolled through and see the gauge I created, just not sure what to do now.
msirach 03-05-2011, 02:45 PM On the Scan Gauge, Choose: More, then choose: Scan

Can you post what DTC related xgauges you programmed and what was displayed? Should be able to figure out what's going on from that.

What does this display? It is coded to display the number (how many) of stored and pending DTCs from the HV battery computer. If it reads zero then there are no codes. Any non-zero number means codes to pull out with another xgauge.
councilman 03-06-2011, 12:20 AM Heres a picture. Does this mean there are no codes under the xgauge I created called ted (renamed ted to 745) using the perameters you gave me? I created the xgauge then went back to the main menu and hit gauge then hit the top right button until I come up with the xgauge I created. I'm just not sure if im doing this correctly because I can also hit the bottom right button and see the xgauge I created. Not sure if I'm looking in the right place for the display number for stored DTCs. I named one xgauge 745. When I go into gauge in the main menu and I see 0745 that means no codes exist?
Also posted link to video.
Also I noticed as I've been driving what sounds and looks like the radiator fan blowing. More so than before.

When I look at the guage and scroll through I see 0745. Not exactly sure I'm looking in the right area on the scangauge that your referring to having a zero that signifies no codes.
I also created these xgauges
0720 - Instrument cluster NAM:720
0730 - Power Steering Module NAM:730
0760 - ABS module NAM:760
All these also have zeros in front of them.
How long do codes remain? Could the guys that changed my tires wiped out the codes?
The vehicle is acting similar to the 05 FEH we had that Ford was forced to buy back. That one too would take a long drive for the STOP SAFELY NOW indicator to come on.
msirach 03-07-2011, 02:50 PM Can't see it. Sorry, the page (or document) you have requested is not available Over on the right upper corner where your name is, click on: Share then: Sharing Settings and choose public
CarlD 03-07-2011, 03:23 PM Working on getting video and pics uploaded but the best I can explain is with the xguages I created I'm seeing a 0 in front of them. For example I created

If you're seeing a 0 then that means no codes. If it was blank (no display next to the 745 or 760, etc) then that would mean an incorrectly coded xgauge or a module that wasn't responding. In my experience any time there is a red triangle or yellow exclamation, the codes remain long after the warning indicator is gone, sometimes for several days. Their status changes but you would still see a 1 or 2 or whatever instead of a 0 on the gauges you have coded. Either your codes were cleared or they cleared themselves remarkably quickly.
councilman 03-07-2011, 05:39 PM From the time I recieved the Stop Safely Now to the time I ran the xguage was 6 days. Is that too long CarlD?
If I cant pull the codes does anyone have any suggestions as what to do now? At this point when I drive the car for a while I get a fan noise that seems louder than normal. No light. No warnings and no Stop Safely Now. As a reminder I only recieved the Stop Safely Now after driving over 300 straight highway miles.

Heres another attempt at link for video. I guess google is having trouble with this feature. I did test and it seems to work.

From the video you have no stored or pending codes. Perhaps 6 days was enough to clear or there never was a fault long enough to store a code. If the fans that are running are in the battery, I suspect either the blend door or a temp sensor may be intermittently failing. If it is the radiator fans I would suspect the motor electronics pump or perhaps the engine water pump.
The reason the other gauges are blank is due to the fact that for most revs of the Scangauge firmware you can only use a message for 1 xgauge at a time. I wouldn't worry about the instrument cluster xgauge but if you change the rxfs for the various modules to the following, you should be able to get a reading (which will be zero per the video) for every xgauge that you select with the four white buttons.
for the 745 xgauge, change rxf to:
RXF: 024D04620502
for the 760 xgauge, change rxf to:
RXF: 026804620502
for the 730 xgauge, change rxf to:
RXF: 023804620502
for the 720 xgauge, change rxf to:
RXF: 022804620502
You could then pull up all 4 gauges so your scangauge would look like:
_______________
| 0745 0720 |
| 0760 0730 |
_______________
Now if any of these give you something other than zero in front of the 7xx, then you have stored or pending codes and you can then pull them with another xgauge.

councilman 03-16-2011, 06:41 PM Anyone want to have a go at the codes that I posted above? Anyone think I did the wrong thing by having the pump changed. I've read about relays and the blend door as well.
I also read on this forum about the battery harness they checked the vin number and said it didnt come up on my vehicle I ask if they could verify and his comment was that they would have to take out the whole battery to do that.

It looks to me like they checked for the motor and generator overheat codes but didn't find them. I don't see any harm in having them do this if it was at no charge.
You can code up a motor electronics temp xgauge if you want to monitor it in the future.
councilman 03-17-2011, 12:50 PM It was no charge under the powertrain warranty. Don't know why it wasn't under the hybrid portion of the warranty.
Can anyone tell me what the codes that they did pull up mean?

According to the invoice you posted, they were trying to pull P0A3C and P0A3E codes but they weren't set. P0A3C is motor inverter over temp and P0A3E is generator inverter over temp. I'm kinda surprised they replaced the pump without any codes.
councilman 04-03-2011, 03:08 PM So might I expect the same problem of getting the stop safely now indicator after driving over 300 miles?
CarlD 04-04-2011, 01:13 PM So might I expect the same problem of getting the stop safely now indicator after driving over 300 miles?
Not if it was the MEC pump that was causing the problem; a new pump should fix that. However, since the generator inverter and motor inverter over temp DTCs weren't set, it is possible that it was something else, perhaps HV battery related. The blend door motor or the fans inside the battery could cause this behavior intermittently. Since you have a scangauge you could monitor the MEC temp and the average battery temp (Tav) xgauges and see if they ever start going up beyond what one would expect. Tav shouldn't get above 88F or so when driving if the A/C is working. I haven't looked at MEC temp enough to get a feel for a normal range. Also, Phoenix is not the best place to try to understand 'normal' temps to begin with.... but even when it is 118F out if I am on the freeway the Tav will eventually get down to 71.6F from the A/C being on continuously. MEC temp should stay low also at freeway speeds due to the large amount of airflow over the radiator.
