Having lunch in Sellwood recently, I spotted former Gov. Barbara Roberts springing out of her shiny, champagne-colored hybrid car – parked, incidentally, haphazardly over the curb. She cheerily waved and said, “I don’t think I’ll get a ticket.”
While driving a Toyota Prius offers no guarantee of leeway with the parking police, it is gratifying to see such a famous face making a quiet yet important statement for the environment just by driving around town.
As the season turns to spring, there will be plenty of opportunities to make differences both big and small for sustainability, whether it’s buying green tags to offset your spring break trip, dumping your computer at Free Geek rather than in the garbage, choosing to frequent the many local farmers markets for the bulk of your household’s produce or even growing your own.
