What are we going to do about this? Roll everything back to the new updated numbers. Stay with the old ones?

Hi Psy:

___I was leaning to a tougher 125/150/175% above EPA combined for the 08’s forward but with the EPA having an estimator, I would like to convert everything to the new estimates matching the 08 schedules once a few 08’s show up. Tom wants to do something completely different however. We will work it out soon enough.

Canada has yet to updated their EPA figures... determining if your doing really good or bad will be a tough one to decipher since every country pretty much has their own numbers... good or bad mileage will never be the same!

My concern was the base numbers. Do I change my current EPA numbers to the new standard or keep the old at which my cars were made under.

The Civic is the same car. The Accord on the other hand had a tuning change in 06. The truck ,,, well it would serve better as beer cans. So I don't care about its numbers. Not even going to log it anymore and am going to drive it like I stole it.

I have no interest in what the sites leadership does with the stats % for hypermiler, expert, elite and such. Without direction on the base numbers. The % numbers mean nothing.

Keep the old numbers.

Basiclly what I think I will do if Wayne agrees is keep hypermiler the same. Anyone beating what ever the EPA is for that model year will be a hypermiler. Obviously just being a hypermiler with the new numbers won't mean much because it should be expected. thats why they changed the numbers. Anyone not a hypermiler with the 08 numbers is doing poorly by epa standards.

What will change is an additional 25% or 30%(still to be deterimined) added to the existing figures for expert and elite.

I haven't coded anything yet so If anyone wants to pipe in with their comments please do it here.

That sounds like a fair plan.

Do you propose additional 25% or 30% for Expert/Elite regardless of model year?

How about a factor of maybe 20-25% to be added to the EPA #s for all cars '08 and newer?
Would that be cumbersome to code or to maintain?

I think a level playing field is important. Leaving Hypermiler status as-is essentially grants that status to anyone buying a new vehicle if they put in even modest effort towards FE. OTOH, raising the bar for Expert and Elite regardless of the car's year makes it much tougher for anyone driving a pre-'08 car but roughly equivalent to the current challenge level for buyers of new cars.

Hi Brucepick:

___Tom and I have will work something out in the future. Allowing even hypermiler status for those that drive poorly with a car based on the 08 schedules is not an acceptable practice. I would have to make everybody a hypermiler with the bar lowered that far and that just is not feasible for the Congratulations Hypermiler thread or fair for those that have had to really work to receive EPA combined. 01 – 07 Prius drivers with any kind of highway in particular have it really really tough while an 08 driver of anything can slide into the category without improving upon anything.

___With regards to Expert and Elite, there will be a healthy adjustment made for the 08’s looking forward as well but I am just not sure just what that will be just yet?

___Good Luck

Wayne,

Thanks. This looks reasonable to me.

What about if we rename the basic level from hypermiler to skilled hypermiler. And add the same percentages as the other levels.

Since the defination of hypermiler is someone that beats the EPA we realy should keep it that way.

So instead of hypermiler it show sup as Skilled hypermiler.

pre 08 drivers would get skilled hypermiler when they beat epa
post 07 drivers would get skilled hypermiler at 20% over epa.

Does that sound reasonable to everyone?

This makes sense to me.

Though I'd be quite happy with plain "Hypermiler" - speaking only for myself of course. I'd estimate that with the ~20% increase for '08 and later cars, the challenge is roughly equal to what it's been till now.

I asked some questions in another thread about these labels and Delta pointed me here. Over there I made the suggestion that those who are members here be labeled as "prospective hypermilers"...at least if they're within say 10% of reaching the EPA numbers. I think that would be a bit more encouraging for those working and trying. If the purpose of the site is to encourage better FE through driving techniques then it's important, IMO, to present an air of encouragement.

For instance, even though I'm within 1.2mpg of the EPA's 55mpg combined average I will probably not achieve that for at least a year or more due to the fact that I have nearly 60k miles on my car...despite the fact that I routinely get 60mpg tanks these days and haven't had a tank below 55mpg for ages (maybe one this winter?).

This is an excellent suggestion. {thumbs up}
