Hi Chuck:

___That story should make Eric and all in the area very proud indeed. I think you have heard me say this in the past but Wisconsinites have a different mindset then most just across the border in Illinois. It is hard to put a finger on but they are just nicer and more open people for some reason???

___They way they structured Madison is just another example of how the citizenry of the state act together to form a more friendly environment for all … I have seen this time and time again at their Auto shows, their ball games, and even at the group meets. There are nut jobs there just like everywhere else but overall, I have to hand it to the local city and state government(s) of Wisconsin for doing the best with what they have.

___Good Luck

This seems to be the urban/rural atmosphere. I think of a couple of times driving into Oregon and realizing it's not California. Same kind of comparison with the Piney Woods of East Texas vs. D/FW.

Funny... The first thought I had when I saw the title was... "Austin, TX" Then I regained my senses and figured that there have got to be better places.

I did a lot of walking in Austin, and if Madison is the only place in the US easier for walking, we have some troubles.

You can walk pretty well around Austin when I was there (Marc jump in if I'm off), but I recall you really had to be near Zylker park or that general area (give or take 10-15 miles) for it to really work for you.

Last I heard UT cleared out the college getto, so I couldn't afford property there to save my life. Ohh well... Dang pertty city though. Really enjoyed my time there.

There is no way these studies are objective, but there is little doubt Madison and Austin are pedestrian-friendly.

Russ Feingold was down here a few years ago, and mentioned that he felt completely at home in Austin. Austin (probably) = Madison in many, many ways. Well, except that Madison is completely uninhabitable. :)

Austin has historically been both pedestrian & bike friendly, but Dallas/Houston-like growth has begun to pit the burbs against the old timers. You here locals say "ain't like it used to be a lot". But if you live & work near downtown, it's a GREAT place to give up that car & walk.

Dan, I imagine Houston ain't bad if you live around Rice/UT MD Anderson/University Park. If you got the money :)
