According to the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP), the consensus of most scientists worldwide is that increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases will lead to significant climate warming.

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. House is expected to approve the formation of a special committee on climate change today -- a move some suggested was an effort to sidestep John Dingell, the powerful chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee and an ally to the auto industry.

Dingell, D-Dearborn, and other powerful committee chairmen struck a deal last month and agreed to the formation of the committee -- called the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Climate Change. The formation requires a vote of the full House.

The 15-member committee, to be headed by U.S. Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., will have nine Democrats and six Republicans and a budget of about $1 million.

Some congressional aides have suggested the budget could be as high as $1.3 million.

There is growing pressure to act on reducing greenhouse gases. President Bush has called on Congress to give the administration authority to rewrite and raise fuel economy mandates for passenger cars.
