Global automobile sales may exceed 80 million in 2012 and 118 million in 2020, said Jeff Schuster, director of forecasting for researcher J.D. Power and Associates.
Worldwide deliveries will set a record of about 71.8 million this year, Schuster said today in slides for a conference in Ypsilanti, Mich. The previous record was 70.3 million in 2007.
J.D. Power estimates U.S. sales will be 12.8 million next year, Schuster said. Deliveries will exceed 15 million in 2012 and 16 million in 2014, he said.
Most of these cars will be Internal combustion based. The transition off of gasoline will need to be in the taillights by 2020.
