College football is unlike any other sport in they don't have a real playoff system to declare a champion. Instead, a couple of polls and a program in the BS - I mean the BCS system picks which two play for the title. Or something like that - they tweak it almost every year as the credibility is suspect.
Because western schools like Boise and TCU play "nobody", TCU in Fort Worth is joining the Big East Conference so they will have a sporting chance to win a national championship. TV ratings along with the money that drives it are motivating such moves. Strangely, money motivates universities to hang on to bowl games....it inflates the number of perceived "champions".
If the top 16 in the polls were selected in a playoff system, while not perfect would establish a high degree of confidence in the eventual champion.
