View Full Version : Week of December 6th - December 12th 2010 (Nat Avg $2.87)
Right Lane Cruiser 12-06-2010, 06:50 AM Welcome to another week in December!
Light snow but the roads were decent in most places.
16F, 3mph crosswind from the W, light snow:
77.7mpg for 15.0mi (Home to work)
The tank is steady at 78.0mpg over 161.9mi.
RobertSmalls 12-06-2010, 07:08 AM Zero gasoline used so far today. I called in sick.
LinuxGold 12-06-2010, 07:30 AM Good morning everyone! Nothing to report still -- still busy with errands errands errands...
Still saving gas -- sorry didn't log my gas tanks in last few weeks. Will report THIS tank. I think it is fair for me to say to remove myself from Winter FE challenge until I can get FCD installed!! (saving $$ for ScanGauge with X-Gauge)...
So glad to be back!
diamondlarry 12-06-2010, 07:44 AM I am so not looking forward to the trip I have to make in another hour or so.:( I have to take our pooch for her regular checkup and we have a fair amount of snow on the road and it's the coldest it's ever been since I got the Insight; 16F. I suspect that it's also the coldest temps this car has ever experienced since it came from the AZ area.
epurvee 12-06-2010, 08:04 AM Holy crap it was cold! Fricken 28 F when I left at 8:15! It's not supposed to be this cold in Georgia! On Wednesday they say it could drop to 18 at night! My pipes are going to burst! Decent commute to work. The commute home had a lot of traffic. I can only assume that it was holiday shoppers.
71.8 MPG / 11.0 Miles home to work
54.8 MPG / 12.0 Miles work to home
PaleMelanesian 12-06-2010, 08:37 AM Sounds like we have the same weather! 31F here and frost, but I put a tarp across the windshield last night to avoid scraping this morning.
63.6 mpg / 13 miles.
The tank is at 68.9 mpg / 322 miles and getting down to 3/4 on the gauge.
diamondlarry 12-06-2010, 02:16 PM Well that was depressing.:p I had to scrape about 1/4" of ice of the windows. The road conditions were marginal at best; there was plenty of hard packed snow and ridges that tossed me around(must be that "road sensing" feature that comes standard on Insights:p). I had 21.0 miles for the round trip and managed to only come up with 63.2 mpg. :ccry:
PaleMelanesian 12-06-2010, 02:27 PM Wow. That is bad, for an Insight, driven by Larry, to be as low as my civic. I know the car and the driver, so the blame must fall on the conditions.
paulbates 12-06-2010, 02:58 PM Had an indicated 34.6 for 90 miles from Lansing to detroit. Acutal is probably closer to 32. However, it was chipped down this morning getting warmed up.
In other news Gas has departed $3, in the $3.05 range as stations get their new tanks.
diamondlarry 12-06-2010, 03:03 PM Wow. That is bad, for an Insight, driven by Larry, to be as low as my civic. I know the car and the driver, so the blame must fall on the conditions.
I know right. Unfortunately, I can't pin it all on the conditions; mostly but not completely.;) The route I chose was my normal country road. In the trip there and back, there are only a grand total of 5 stop signs that I have to stop for. But, since they aren't as heavily traveled, the surface conditions weren't nearly as good so gliding was nearly nonexistant. On top of that, I wasn't able to build up sufficient momentum to top some of the hills and a time or two, I was down to 3rd gear at around 22 mph. The handling characteristics of the Insight and the roads made it extremely dicey to let the speed build up much over 40 mph on the downhills where 50+ is needed. I'm wondering if a highway route would have been any worse.
Right Lane Cruiser 12-06-2010, 04:27 PM Ouch, Larry. Now you know why I vary my routes with the snowy weather. :(
19F (8F windchill), 9mph headwind from the NNW, partly cloudy:
78.2mpg for 15.0mi (Work to home)
The tank is steady at 78.0mpg over 177.0mi.
Day Total: 78.0mpg over 30.1mi
Die2self 12-06-2010, 08:29 PM I hear you this morning was 16F here in SW MO

The day of 11/30 I took a trip to Tulsa to drop off my parents at the airport to head back to Fiji. They are trying to start a Bible school there to many of the surrounding island nations. Needless to say Temps were cold, CC set at 65-67 MPG and a headwind all the way there and 600 lbs in the bed with excess baggage. Not a good combination. I helped stem the numbers on the way back with a combination of 22.0 MPG. It would have been nicer if the wind had turned into a tailwind, BUT NO! It had to change into a side wind all the way home. P&G helped and I didn't top 65. It was usually to to 65 and down to 50 or 45.
All in all the week was 20.4 MPG (not good at all)
14.81 gals used and 302.2 miles driven.
Stayed at home on 12/1 with a sick child so no driving that day:Banane18:
Today was cold all over
16F - To school and then work
- 19.1 MPG / 13.4 miles
38F - home
- 22.0 MPG / 13.2 miles
20.2 / 26.6 miles and 1.30 gals used. I will have to fill up tomorrow after work and see what the damage has been. Life time avg is going down:(
jcp123 12-06-2010, 08:37 PM Well, just got done swapping out the dizzy cap and rotor on the '88 Volvo after yesterday's spark plug and wireset change. Both have left the car feeling much stronger, though it still has a disturbing hesitation. I have a fuel filter left to change, which may help a fuel problem. Still, after achieving 25,41 mpg on the highway yesterday @ 65mph while lacking overdrive, I think the car's not that far off the mark. It just looks like it lacked basic maintenance.
Unfortunately, Texas' infernal "safety" inspections still leave me needing front turn signal lenses...
Right Lane Cruiser 12-07-2010, 07:12 AM No driving to work for me. I've contracted conjunctivitis from my immediate family. :ccry:
PaleMelanesian 12-07-2010, 08:34 AM 68.2 mpg / 10.5 mi / 45F - home last night
60.1 mpg / 13.0 mi / 28F - home-school-work this morning with frost
The tank is down again, to 68.5 / 346 miles and just above 3/4 on the gauge.
PaleMelanesian 12-07-2010, 01:27 PM :D
Home for lunch. ~48F and light wind.
71.3 / 10.7 mi - home
87.2 / 10.5 - back to work. My old (good) route with no school detour, car warmed up.
The tank is up to 69.0 / 368 miles.
jcp123 12-07-2010, 02:10 PM 35,4 to breakfast, home depot, cvs, and back home in the Echo.
Die2self 12-07-2010, 08:24 PM As I though the tank was not good with the big trip in the middle of it. I used up about 2 weeks of fuel in that one trip.:(
408.6 miles
19.277 Gals
21.2 MPG
4.72 G/100 Miles
Right Lane Cruiser 12-08-2010, 07:22 AM Still at home with the creeping crud. I hope everyone else is having a better time of it than I!
PaleMelanesian 12-08-2010, 08:44 AM I left my numbers in the car, but by memory it was mid-60's both ways.
PaleMelanesian 12-08-2010, 01:39 PM I got my numbers now, and went out for errands at lunch.
68.4 / 10.5 - home last night
67.1 / 12.9 - home->school->work this morning
64.8 / 4.4 - to store at lunch *
72.5 / 4.7 - back to work (longer = right turns around the block instead of left onto busy street)
The tank is up to 68.9 / 400 miles and 3/4 on the gauge.
* my trunk is full of cement blocks. I don't need a truck. :D;)
jcp123 12-08-2010, 09:36 PM :( less than 15mpg on my 60 mi all highway trip today in the Mustang. I'm wondering if the thermostat is stuck open, as today for the first time the car never warmed up even after a full 30 miles on the highway. Blah.
Chalupa102 12-09-2010, 05:39 AM Good morning everyone. Had to take my mom to the airport and it was definitely the coldest drives I've done in probably about 8 months. My car was on the block heater for about 5 hrs, but still only 80F when I started up.
16F when I left the house and currently now it's 18F and dark with winds from the WNW @ 5mph. The outside temp gauge on my car read as low as 13F at one point.
- 44.7mpg for 38.4 miles from home to the airport
- 47.5mpg for 44.6 miles from the airport back home (tried a different route to maximize f/e)
Day total: 46.1mpg over 83.2 miles
The tank is up to 45.9mpg over 183.4 miles with 9 gallons remaining.
Right Lane Cruiser 12-09-2010, 06:30 AM Nice work, Dan!
I'm still stuck at home with crusty eyes. :(
epurvee 12-09-2010, 07:57 AM 18 degrees in Augusta, GA!? Back when I grew up in Vermont this would still be pretty cold, but here it's unfricken believable. But the major fuel efficiency elves were with me today as I had a good commute to work. Going back home wasn't as good but can't complain too much.
71.3 MPG / 11.0 Miles home to work
54.3 MPG / 12.0 Miles work to home
PaleMelanesian 12-09-2010, 08:10 AM Very good, epurvee!
65.2 / 10.7 home last night, 50 degrees
63.8 / 13.1 this morning, school dropoff, 31 degrees and hard frost. It's a pain when it's still frosting as you drive.
The tank is down to 68.7 / 424 miles.
diamondlarry 12-09-2010, 05:04 PM Sad day for FE. :ccry: It was 22F and the wind was W@ 5-10 mph with gusts to 20 mph. The trip out was primarily heading east and the trip home was primarily west. The trip out was 72.6 over 16.5 miles and 66.7 over 16.5 miles back. I wish it was this easy to hold 20 bars of SoC when it was warm out.:p Out of the 33 miles, I think less than 2 of them were at 19 bars.
deleond2 12-10-2010, 01:28 AM Despite the increasingly cold nights and frequent trips to the gym where my truck does not even warm up completely, I managed to pull this last tank above 20, to 20.3mpg. This current tank is at about 260miles with 20.1mpg. I work this weekend, so that means about 40miles of highway driving on Sat and 40 more on Sunday. I'm currently exploring some new ways to get home using OKC city streets. The miles driven on these city routes is a bit shorter, and uses less fuel than the longer highway commute, but it is hard for me to accept the lower mpg/score. Unless OKC gets a freak snow storm, this next tank should be over 20mpg, and may even approach 20.5mpg!!

Right Lane Cruiser 12-10-2010, 07:09 AM Nice work!
I'm still working from home -- this time to accommodate a doctor's appointment for my wife. I'll be driving a bit later in the day to drop my mother in law off.
epurvee 12-10-2010, 08:22 AM It was warmer today. It got up to 24 F when I left for work. Yippie! Had two monster glides on the way to work which gave me a very good trip in for the cold temps. On the last stretch of my commute home I beat yesterday by just a little, so this day was over all better off.
73.4 MPG / 11.0 Miles home to work
56.2 MPG / 12.0 Miles work to home
jcp123 12-10-2010, 06:33 PM 44,3mpg to job interview, 39,7mpg home.
Right Lane Cruiser 12-11-2010, 01:07 PM After clearing my driveway of about 13" I had to drive over to the closest gas station to get more fuel for the snowblower. It wasn't pretty and I had trouble getting back out of the station.
This was in the Insight, mind you... with 7" unplowed snow on the roads. :p
20F (5F windchill), 20mph wind from the NNE, snowing:
26.3mpg for 2.8mi (Home to gas station and back)
The tank is now down 2.4mpg to 75.6mpg over 179.8mi with 20 bars left on the fuel gauge.
I don't want to even think about what that would have been in the Elantra.
RobertSmalls 12-11-2010, 06:21 PM 26mpg when up to your ground clearance in snow? Yikes. What would you normally get on a 2.8mi trip in cold weather?
Right Lane Cruiser 12-11-2010, 07:10 PM Hi, Robert -- it should have been closer to 70mpg or so.
