Welcome to another week and lower temperatures! I hope it is a good one and I wish Americans an early Happy Thanksgiving!

Tons of red lights this morning... :p

27F (21F windchill), 5mph tailwind from the NNW, misting sleet:

87.4mpg for 15.0mi (Home to work)

The tank is now down to 97.7mpg over 974.6mi with 1 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.

I won't be making it to 1000mi on this tank as I don't have a detour available to take up the extra ~8mi it would take and I don't trust the tank level to get me through tomorrow's commute... especially as it is supposed to be snowing all day today.

74.3 / 12.4 this morning, 66F.

It could have been better, but I took a neighborhood detour and filled my car with bagged leaves. It'll be chicken coop bedding, then when that gets stinky, compost, then into the garden to grow vegetables.

Took the van to Dallas and back this weekend. 30.5 mpg / 300 mi round trip in a 23 mpg highway rated van, with 6 passengers on board for the return trip. Started with a not-quite-full tank, returned with a quarter left. :D

Left much later for work today, and while there was less traffic I hit almost every light. They really have the timing on these things set to the ultimate suck setting. Wife had me meet her at a restaurant after work which required me to drive on the interstate at rush hour so I did the speed limit, and suffered accordingly.

75.3 MPG / 11.0 Miles home to work
48.4 MPG / 9.3 Miles work to restaurant
66.4 MPG / 4.3 Miles restaurant to home

Not sure how today is going to go. The temperature is 60F now and the forecast is for a bit higher. However, dicey weather is in the forecast too. I have to take my daughter to her voice lesson today and it is ~15 miles each way on less than Hypermiling-Friendly routes.

Hm. Finally filled after 2mo 4 days. It was slightly better than the FCD showed, but not much. This work route just isn't nearly as conducive to the high numbers as the last commute I had... I can see that winter is going to really hurt this year. :(

I drove straight to the gas station instead of taking the Anoka bypass (which is probably in poor shape) and didn't pass my house in the interest of avoiding worse road conditions.

24F (16F windchill), 7mph headwind from the NNW, misting sleet:

81.7mpg for 15.6mi (Work to Costco for gas)
85.3mpg for 2.5mi (Costco to home via my normal back route)

The tank is currently at 85.3mpg over 2.5mi. Oddly, the fuel gauge is switching back and forth between 19 and 20 bars... even though I stuffed it? Strange.

Day Total: 84.3mpg over 33.1mi

The FCD showed 97.5mpg but calculated fill ended up being 98.351mpg. I'll take it. At least for now my LFE is at 92.8mpg. :)

Check your tire pressure gauge! Mine was off by 15psi, and so were my tires.

I fixed it, and I'm overshooting all my glides now. :) 72mpg in the rain despite faster driving.

Btw, Sean, that's impressive mileage as always.

What did you check your gauge against?

How's that new job treating you?

Kind of a depressing trip today for the trip to my daughter's voice lessons.:( It was 63F and and wind was SW@ 10-15 mph. Traffic was not very cooperative either. Roads were a bit damp with intermittent drizzle. 90.4 out and, after sitting for 1 1/2 hours, the return trip was a mere 74.2. I guess it's back to reality after yesterday's stellar run on the way home from the gas station.:P

My $10 12V tire inflator's built in gauge reads about a third too low. I checked it against a $10 tire chuck with 3" analog dial gauge (the kind that you hook to an air compressor).

New job = hyperawesome. Several of the other engineers like my car. Not surprising, since we're in the aviation industry, and aero == cool. But how many people can I talk in to actually buying first-gen Insights? I'm guessing none.

The commute is still great. I've picked up a few mpg by timing the lights better, and traded those mpg in for a few more mph. I'm happy.

That sounds like the Accugage (http://www.getagauge.com/) I have!

I'm glad the job is working out for you. :)

I tried the highway this morning to see what I could expect from that route. Not much, it turns out. :p

10F (-4F windchill), 11mph crosswind from the W, overcast:

75.9mpg for 12.7mi (Home to work)

The tank is currently at 77.3mpg over 15.2mi with 19?? bars of 20.

I don't know what is up with my gas gauge. I've never seen this behavior before.

I have three different pencil-type pressure gauges. I've checked and they all agree, so I just trust the one. I should periodically double-check them. Thanks for the reminder.

67.4 / 11.2 mi home last night. Poor performance for the conditions. ???
81.2 / 12.4 this morning. That's better! :D

The tank is up to 71.7 / 91 miles. Still way above F, of course. :p

I have no right to write here because I don't ride but I had to do something instead of it, right?
Coldness, rain, snow in forecast. It will be my first winter. I don't know what will happen to me. I better go to a ride tomorrow, I will HATE the next day when I will be on the backseat of my own bike because we both need to go to the nearby town and Teresa lost a big part of her drive belt sprocket... She was a fine girl as always, bring us home.
Alvaro hates buses, I mean ignorant smokers on the bus stop. There are usually at least one.

I wonder what winter will do with my MPG. I will rarely ride but slowly. Speed affects Cili more than coldness, maybe she will be fine. It's exciting, Alvaro didn't ride her in winter alone, we know nothing for sure :D
My average is so horrible due to fact I learned on my own bike that I can make it better even in winter I think...

Interesting morning. I first had to drop off socks to my daughter, then when I got to work my door wouldn't close due to the latching mechanism missing 2 screws. Made a stop to a NAPA, who were not able to help me at all and then went to a junkyard and found a couple metros and got the screws I needed, then hit work.

65.3 MPG / 12.3 Miles home to daycare to work
33 MPG / 1.2 Miles work to NAPA
43.1 MPG / 2.8 Miles NAPA to junkyard
68.1 MPG / 1.9 Miles junkyard to work

Had a horrible commute back home having to stop and pick up the daughter as well. I'll just give the day total, which isn't bad in the scheme of things but is bad for what I have done with this car.

53.4 MPG / 35.3 Miles for the day, brought tank under 62 MPG

That gauge is still showing 19 bars. I'm really confused.

I took my normal back roads route home and worked it as hard as I could. I miss summer time glide distances!!!

20F, 2mph crosswind from the W, sunny:

88.3mpg for 15.4mi (Work to home)

The tank is back up to 82.4mpg over 30.7mi with 19 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.

The day started out well, I was at 19.8mpg for the tank with the gallons left. The commute to work (about 20miles) netted me about 21.1mpg (against the wind). I figured I needed a 22-23mpg commute home to get to 20mpg on the tank, with the wind at my back, things were looking very good for the evening commute.....

But trouble showed up, and this will more than likely be my 1st sub 20mpg tank of the season. Traffic was slowed to a crawl for 2 miles, I35 was reduced from 3 to 1 lane due to an accident. I tried to recover during the remaining 5 miles home but the damage was done. What could have been easily a 23-24mpg commute home ended up being a lousy 18.8mpg. My tank has stayed at 19.8mpg w/ about 9miles till empty. The scanguage has been off by 0.2mpg in the past, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Though I failed to get 20mpg, I will try to keep my mpgs above last yrs levels.

You did well for the situation, Deleond2! It is tough to counteract traffic and cold weather. Keep trying though -- the improvements you put into your technique will pay big dividends once the weather warms up again. :)

Quite a wind to fight this morning.

21F (10F windchill), 11mph cross/headwind from the ESE, overcast:

81.7mpg for 15.0mi (Home to work)

The tank is back down to 82.2mpg over 45.8mi with 19 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.

We are in for some messy precipitation starting in just a couple of hours so driving home is going to be... interesting.

Nice commute this morning. Not much traffic on the way to work as a lot of people are off today. My only limiting factor was there was a little bit of a head wind. Had a great commute back home. Due to very little traffic on the way back home, really slowed it down and got very good mileage.

76.1 MPG / 11.0 Miles home to work
62.8 MPG / 12.0 Miles work to home

Sunshine and 7 Celsius (45F), little villages and curvy roads between them, altitude change, very low traffic and everything that makes a trip nice... After 2 hours my fingers became painfully cold. Stupid winter gloves... Oh there was some wind too.
125km/78 miles. I did my best tank on these roads and now I was content with riding at a low pace, probably my results won't be too bad, I can't even guess, I never rode in cold weather since I got my driving licence. It would be nice to see details but I can have numbers after finishing this tank. That may took long if snow comes and stays...

I will write my other thoughts into my own topic :D

The wind is starting to pick up. I drove home early as I don't really have much on my schedule for the rest of the day, the weather is supposed to turn ugly, and Thanksgiving traffic is always a bear.

27F (15F windchill), 14-18mpg crosswind from the ESE, overcast:

82.2mpg for 15.4mi (Work to home)

The tank is steady at 82.2mpg over 61.2mi with 19 of 20 bars on the fuel gauge.

So much for the day average. :( The wife called with an emergency task -- run to a bakery a short distance from the house to pick up a cake before they closed at 4PM. 3 stop signs and a light in less than a mile with a stop at the bakery, too. And an inch of snowy slush on the roads. :p

I'd have taken the Elantra but of course it is buried behind garbage bins and the snowblower and it would have taken too long to get it out since I had to be back by 4 to pick up my daughter down the street... and she called me at 20min before the hour.

30F (24F windchill), 5mph wind from the E, snowing:

52.4mpg for 0.9mi (Home to bakery)
48.8mpg for 0.9mi (Bakery to home)

The tank is now down to 80.6mpg over 63.2mi with 19 of 20 bars left on the fuel gauge.

Day Total: 79.1mpg over 32.4mi

After getting caught in the traffic jam, I had a chance to think about stuff. When the pile up started, I spent so much time bitching and cussing in the truck, It did dawn on me to take on the of the exits near by and use city streets to by pass the mess. I Filled up early this morning and confirmed my tank of 19.81mpg :(.

I had a crappy start to the last tank, but a good start to this one. Putting the trip to the gym and the commute to work together, that added up to 20miles and 21.0mpg. The commute home was going well until I saw I-35 was crap. Instead of getting on the interstate and bitching about traffic, I stayed on city streets and headed south on Eastern (one of the main North to South roads in the OKC metro.) Where Eastern intersects with I35, it was horrible mess, there was a huge line at the red light!! I coasted (in Neutral) to the back of the line and luckily I came to a stop at the top of the bridge. The Light went for red to green several times, but I wasnt concerned. With the truck turned off but the tranny in Neutral, I let gravity take my to the light:). The truck must have been off for more than 5 minutes because the CURRENT trip on my scanguage had reset. Once I got past this intersection, it was smooth sailing home. Despite staying on city streets and driving against the wind, my commute home was about 22mpg (I had to guess since the truck was off for more than 5 minutes and the scan guage had reset during the commute). I'm currently at 21.5mpg and 45miles for the tank.

I think I'm getting the hang of this driving w/ load stuff. I'm beginning to realize that I'm getting better results by going up to 45-50% load downhill, to build up speed and momentum, and varying the load while going up hill to avoid from losing the speed too fast. It is hard to get in a groove with lots of traffic on the hwy, but when traffic is lite, it is awesome!! When I get into the perfect DWL zone, It feels as if the truck is gliding effortlessly down the hwy, almost floating.

Don't feel too bad Sean, it weren't much better here. We had some kind of ugly weather here and my average was worse than yours.:(

The temperature today was 29F and winds were SW@ 10-20 mph with gusts to 30 mph. I went to pick my daughter up at school since she has early release on Wednesday's. I had 69.3 there (head/cross wind) and, due to the traffic leaving the school and sitting for about 15 minutes and letting that tiny aluminum engine cool off:p, I was only able to pull off 79.9 mpg on the way home(tail/cross wind). Day average was 74.2 mpg over 13.6 miles.:o

37,8 to pick up a tenants' check, run to school, deposit check, then come home. Not too shabby, but then again I gotta do something to make up for the 25-something I got job hunting yesterday (fiancée stayed in car with a/c running while I did applications). Tank is back up to 34,8...tough to swallow after a 40+ start to the tank...

Deleond2, sounds like you're really getting the hang of it! Set your ScanGauge fuel type to hybrid to keep it from turning off when you have the engine off but the key is in the on position (like it was on that hill — it was in ON, right?).

Larry — ouch!!

deleond2
11-24-2010, 09:29 PM
The key was not in the on/run position, I turn the truck off, and I dont turn the key back to run/on until I'm ready to start up the truck again.

On a side note, someone posted a question in the forums on how they can get 200% EPA mpgs. After reading the comments (including yours Right Lane), I'm inspired to push forward. As long as traffice is light, I've noticed I can cost in neutral for much longer than I have before. The short 7mile trip to my mother-in-laws house there is a one mile portion of the trip out in the country where the SL is 50mph. The traffic there is usually very lite. Over the mile, you start at an elevation of 1190ft and it goes down to 1135ft. At the top I was going 40mph, I popped the truck and neutral and finished the mile at 20mph (where the stop sign is). I got 21.6 in the 7 mile trip. Alot of the coasting is a matter of patience and tolerating going slow, and I'm getting better.

Drives my wife nuts though.

In the situation mentioned above when I had the truck off, I would wait 1-2 minutes, then roll 2-3 car lengths, wait another 1-2 minutes and then roll another 2-3 car lengths. This process was repeated until I reached the light. The truck is still steerable w/ the key in the ACC position. I didnt realize the airbags would be off while the key is in the ACC position. One thing I need to be careful with, if it is night time and If sitting at a light with the truck off, turning the key to the ACC position will turn off the automatic head lamps.

Except for waiting at lights or in situations above, any other coasting is done with the truck on.

40F and partly cloudy/dark with winds from the NW @ 13mph

- 43.6mpg for 9.4 miles from home to the high school to hike the trails in the back
- 44.0mpg for 4.1 miles from the school to the gas station to fill up

The tank ended up being 45.5mpg over 457.6 miles. This is the worst tank I've had since April. :(

- 49.0mpg for 25.5 miles from gas station to bike shop to pick up item that came in that I ordered over the phone
- 42.8mpg for 7.8 miles from bike shop to Stop & Shop

On my car with a F A S kill switch (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34455), when the kill switch is OFF for 10-15 seconds then the anti-thief system activates... so the engine CAN'T restart : I have to remove the key and close/open the car for the anti-thief system to accept the engine to be restarted. This is only ANOTHER reason why I put back the car's state into "ready to bump start" as soon as possible after I kill the engine.

Deleond2, I would still put it back into ON position. I only ever use OFF if I'm sitting at a light, I'm not the first in line, it will be a long while (railroad crossing), and I'm trying to conserve battery charge. Then all the lights and everything are off.

It was the very last sweet sunny (though a bit freezy) day before winter came, snow and sleety rain in the forecast... :( We had something to do in the nearby town and we have but one functioning bike at the moment. It was so bad on the backseat... A 2-up but slow paced trip (69kms), no refuel because we wanted to get home and get out of our zillion layer of clothes as soon as possible :D I felt like a Michelin doll. I had additional gloves below my "winter" ones but I'm unable to grasp anything that way. Without it, my fingers simply freeze after some time, not really, but it's still painful and quite impractical as well.
Is it the end of the season for me?! No way... I started to really enjoy riding...

Not too bad so far. I took my daughter to work today. The first 6.6 miles wasn't so good due to the chilly temps but, it could have been much worse without the block heater. I didn't write down the segment numbers for the trip to her work and the trip from there to the store so I'm going to go from memory. The temperature was 30F and the wind was SW@ 5-10 mph with gusts to 15 mph. The trip to my daughter's work was cross/headwinds, the trip from there to the store was cross/tail and the trip home was also cross/tail. I have to go later to pick her up so I'll wait till then to get the final daily average. The Insight was parked outside and had frost on it so I took the Prius.
6?.?-6.6 home to daughter's work
9?.?-2.3 daughter's work to store

After not getting the drive belt sprocket, I'm riding the bus this week, or staying in the town at daytime to sleep. "Good" that I wouldn't have ridden Teresa to work anyway, it's raining, snowing, freezing and melting, all of them within a single day. And the forecast expects the same weather for the next week.

So no individual fuel consumption by me, and no finished tank this week.

I got some left seat time my wife's flex on our trip from Detroit to Cincinnati last Wednesday night. It was cold, sizable headwind and rain for parts of it. It was a great DWL opportunity as the long rolling hills increase from north of dayton all the way to Cincinnati

Because I don't have a scanguage yet I used the dash instant mpg indicator. I don't know if this is true for most ford's, but this one is not a read out of mpg numbers but is like a cell phone signal strength indicator. 6 bars that increase in length left to right.

At first I was kind of annoyed, but then I learned something. Rather than shooting for a certain mpg number, I drove for the most bars. That helped me understand when conditions are forcing lower mpg. For instance when it rained the hardest I was stuck between bars 4 and 5, sometimes 3. When the rain stopped, it was working between 5 and 6. I only occasionally looked at average mpg.

The good news is that I averaged 28.0 mpg for that trip on a car with an epa highway of 24

mid-20's out at ungodly hours shopping, lots of short hops with cold engine
