Another Monday, another week. Getting closer to Thanks Giving here in the States!

46F (43F windchill), 8mph headwind from the SE, clear:

95.1mpg for 15.0mi (Home to work)

The tank is steady at 99.1mpg over 780.8mi with 6 of 20 bars on the fuel gauge.

Considering it was 35 degrees when I left home, which is ungodly cold for Augusta, and there was heavy traffic, I consider it a small miracle that I was able to achieve over 70 MPG on the way to work. Not a bad commute back home, but certainly not the best.

70.4 MPG / 11.0 Miles home to work.
55.4 MPG / 12.0 Miles work to home.

Nice work!! :woot:

What does your route profile look like? Highway? Back roads? Hills?

epurvee
11-08-2010, 08:50 AM
It's completely 4 lane county highway through mostly commercial area. It is the absolute best route for fuel economy and total distance traveled. I've experimented with lots of routes. Mix of hills, but nothing big, and a fair amount of lights. Speed limit is 45 the whole way.

Crazy! Both Georgia and Texas were colder than Minnesota this morning! 42 degrees here.

62.5 mpg / 16 miles - home->school->feed store (closed - new hours open at 8:00 :mad:)->work

After a crazy busy weekend, the tank is down to 72.8 mpg / 503 miles. It was 74.4 on Friday. :( ~5/8 on the gauge.

Lunchtime errands.

41.8 / 2.1 - work to Harbor Freight. The upgraded battery charger was no longer on sale, so I got a replacement of the same one I have.
80.3 / 5.6 - to the feed store again. out of stock. :( There's another nearby feed store that's eagerly waiting for the third strike - they may get my business instead.
81.5 / 4.8 - back to work.

The tank is steady at 72.8 / 516 miles.

Very warm for this time of year today!! :D

The commute was not ideal at all (lots of red lights) and you should see what I can do in 80F+ ;)

62F, 9mph tailwind from the SSE, sunny:

113.0mpg for 15.4mi (Work to home)

The tank is actually back up to 99.4mpg over 796.2mi with 6 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.

Day Total: 103.4mpg over 30.4mi

This driving via load stuff is working wonders!!!!! I had a 26mile drive from my work to my mother-in-law's and most of the drive was against a 15mph wind (gusts up to 21mph). I was able to get 23.5mpg, 23.5MPG GOING AGAINST THE WIND!!!!! AWESOME!!!!! I can feel my gas pedal control is improving and the scanguage is helping me stay in between 35%-45% load.

Yesterday: 96km 2-up, usually damp road with some drizzle, real rain on the last 6km.
Low fuel light is not on yet (no wonder, I haven't even reached 300km with this tank).

I had a rather good run to work this morning managing to time a whole slew of lights I normally have to stop for. :)

43F (40F windchill), 5mph cross/headwind from the ESE, clear:

102.4mpg for 15.0mi (Home to work)

The tank is steady at 99.4mpg over 811.2mi with 5 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.

Think I can hit 1000mi on this tank?

68.3 / 4.0 - work to pharmacy for prescription
63.6 / 8.0 - pharmacy to home
68.1 / 13 - home-school-work this morning

The tank is down to 72.5 / 541 miles. Very close to 1/2 on the gauge.

The new charger seems to be working. It'll take a few days to really top up the battery, but the old one was doing approximately nothing. (putting out 10.8 volts - not gonna work :p)

A lot warmer today, 59 F, but only marginally better mileage. Still can't complain too much. Alright commute home. I think I need to check my tire pressure.

Another, "Hey! Not bad!" drive home for me... in spite of a crunch of traffic in Anoka.

66F, 11mph cross/tailwind from the ESE (I drive pretty much N/S), mostly sunny:

111.6mpg for 15.4mi (Work to home)

The tank is now back up a tick to 99.6mpg over 826.6mi with 5 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.

Day Total: 106.6mpg over 30.4mi (Respectable :))

Yesterday: 107km 2-up, mostly in light rain.
I was in a hurry, had a few pulses well over the PSL - sorry for that, but there was no one around on those backroads to risk :)
Low fuel light came out, tank average is 3,07l/100km = 76,5mpgUS for 435km.
I'm still satisfied considering the rainy weather and the amount of 2-up rides.

I don't expect to drive today. My late dinner got interrupted last night with a call complaining about a water heater spraying and a carpet rapidly soaking at the townhouse we rent out. :( I didn't get to bed until about 2:30 this morning because of that.

I'm zonked but at least I can work from home.

Sorry, Sean. That's no fun at all! Did you get it fixed, or just patched until later?

79.5 / 10.4 home last night. :D THAT's more like it!
72.5 / 12.9 this morning via school.

The tank is steady at 72.5 / 564 miles and very near 1/2 on the gauge. My record was 710 at 1/2.

Hi, Andrew -- my father-in-law and I replaced it and it was working fine with no leaks when we left. At least this time the heater could actually be mostly drained. The first time we did this (about 8yrs ago) we could only drain about 1/3 of the volume because it was so full of silt (water in that city is terrible).

A bit nerve wracking as first of all we really didn't have a choice about replacing it -- the way the plumbing is you can't completely stop all water to the heater without turning off all water to the house. Because the tank itself corroded through (at the top??) to get the spraying to stop we had to shut it all off. Second, since it was late we had to hope we didn't run into any problems we couldn't solve with available materials -- everything closed 30min after I bought the new heater.

I really didn't need the extra expense right now but hey, now the place has a new furnace, AC, water softener, and water heater... all replaced within the last 1.5yrs. How much else can go wrong, right? (I know, I know. I just cursed myself with some catastrophic failure I haven't thought of yet. :p)

Hopefully we can get the carpet dry enough it doesn't mildew. :(

Bummer Sean.:( Hope everything gets fixed soon...and stays fixed. It looks like I'll be driving today. I hope I haven't lost my touch. Although, I sort of never really got it yet with the Insight.:p I'm picking my daughter up at school and taking her to her job with a brief stop for her to get something to eat while she's at work. The first part may not go so well but, the trip home should be awesome as it's basically the same route that I got 139+ on the way home from my son's work once.:)

Hi Sean, I feel your pain. We have replaced our water heater 3 times in 6 years. I had a tankless installed a few months ago. It's great.

A little Levi story:

Levi is 14 and starting to talk about his first car. He’s interested in a TDI so he can make his own biofuel, his uncle Mike has experience with this, so I can see a thousand questions heading his way. Levi wanted to know if I would support making biofuel in the garage, and of course I said I thought it would be awesome.

An interesting experience last night with Levi. We were on our way to a scout meeting in the old FSP. I was dawdling along at my normal “I’m in no hurry pace” on the side roads, pretty close to the speed limit, not just in any hurry to hit the limit. It was dark, and the road was a bit on the curvy side. Suddenly a Corvette zoomed past us, ripping past the car behind us and our FSP in the same swooping maneuver. I thought he was being a bit impatient and reckless, as there was a curve in the road in the middle of all this needless show of bravado. Levi muttered something like: “What a jerk”. The ‘vette continued on, but I knew there were 2 traffic lights ahead, in the most likely path that the driver would take. Then Levi remarked sarcastically: “Dad, I think you should pass him, just to piss him off.”

We continued on down the dark, twisty road. I could see the ‘vette moving ahead, the distance between us increasing, but I just kept my steady speed and waited for the lights. Sure enough, I saw him caught behind the 2nd light, and just as we coasted up behind him, the light turned green. Levi let out a satisfied “HA!”, recognizing the turtle just caught up to the hare. ;-)

At the next light, the ‘vette was caught at a red light, trying to make a hurried but frustrated right turn. We just glided past him, pretty as you please. :p

We both knowingly grinned at each other as we continued on our way, no more words needing to be exchanged.

I've been learning DWL. Getting used to it, the first trip my leg was almost cramping from trying too hard. Realizing that my speed can be too low and learning to control entry and exits from hills

Results:
My Fuel gauge has long been dead, but I have a couple relative indicators that have been right to date when adjusted:

Avg MPG is at 32mpg, but it normally indicates 2 MPG too high, meaning closer to 30... which is good, better than ever.
And the onboard range indicator, which is always a total for the tank, not remaining.. today it was at 813.. again it always reads higher than I can drive, but in the past it rarely sees 700.

Slowly, I am getting it...

I'm almost afraid to admit it, but I also got a Volo Fuel Economy ODB plugin two tanks ago, getting about 2.5 mpg out of that. It changes the low rpm behavior of the engine and makes controlling DWL easier.

Better better better! :)

81.1 / 10.7 mi / 80 degrees - home last night :D
75.1 / 13.1 / 65 degrees - school, work this morning

The tank is UP to 72.8 / 588 miles. I'm calling 580 the 1/2 tank mark. 680 was last tank and 710 was the record.

The new battery charger is wonderful. It seems the battery is ok, just had a very low SOC. :o

51F, 13mph crosswind from the WSW, clear:

97.7mpg for 15.4mi (Work to home)

The tank is steady at 99.4mpg over 857.1mi with 4 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.

Had a meeting at Church tonight and took 'Lantrific out for a spin. There was too much traffic both directions to really push the boundaries but I did have it over 60mpg for most of the trip home. I saw as high as 66 but couldn't hold it through all the stop lights. I actually had it over 60mpg for a good chunk on the way to Church as well... but lost it on that massive hill at the end of the route followed by closely spaced stop signs with 25mph speed limits.

It was amusing to see 856mpg briefly on the ScanGauge when I bump started after getting a rolling start out of the parking lot. :D

44F down, 8mph crosswind from the WSW, clear,
37F back, 2mph crosswind from the SW, clear:

56.2mpg for 17.3mi (Home to Church via a slight detour)
60.5mpg for 16.8mi (Church to home... lost 0.3mpg again stopping for the garage door)

The tank is now up to 45.6mpg over 219.1mi with 11.2g left and the guess gauge indicates one needle width above 3/4.

Day Total: 58.2mpg over 34.2mi

Just filled up the tank, I'm a bit disappointed that I got under 21mpg (20.995), but I'm happy I'm able to reverse the trend of last year and maintain my mpg despite the steadily falling temps. I'm still on pace to get average 21mpg for the year(June 2010 - May 2011).

Sorry to hear that, Sean. :(

---------------------
80.9 / 10.4 - home last night
86.0 / 9.1 - out to music practice
82.2 / 9.5 - back home
64.9 / 12.4 - this morning. Had to stop and buy a fuse for my new battery charger - the old one popped the fuse. I'm glad I had one in there! Bad routes for mpg.

The tank was up to 73.1, but back down a tick to 73.0 / 630 miles.

The new charger is working like a champ. I'm just using the spring clamps right now, but will permanently install it this weekend, with the fuse. Last night with heavy FASing and lights on, the battery got down to 11.4v. Last week, it was down to 10.8.

Thanks, Andrew. It was for the wife of a friend. :(

I ended up taking the Elantra because I needed to rearrange its stall in preparation for the forecasted 4-8" of snow expected tomorrow. I had the snowblower out in the shed in the back yard and of course the car was blocking the back door of the garage so I couldn't get it in without moving the car anyway. Now the Elantra is really snugged up to that door, the garbage and recycle bins are behind it (in front of the "car" door), and the snowblower is also behind the Elantra. I'll have to move the two bins and the snowblower to get 'Lantrific back out, but hey... at least the snowblower is ready to go.

Speaking of ready to go, I nearly had another flat on that machine! One tire was down to 5psi and the other was at 2psi!! The bead hadn't separated from either rim so I got them both up to 30psi and called it a day.

41F, 2mph wind from the NE, overcast:

51.5mpg for 16.6mi (Home to Church with lots of traffic)
58.4mpg for 16.5mi (Church to home... I have GOT to get a garage door opener for that stall!!)

The tank is now up to 46.6mpg over 253.8mi with 10.6g left and the fuel gauge indicates one needle width over 5/8.

Day Total: 54.7mpg over 33.2mi

I should be able to get this tank up over 50mpg without too much trouble.

It is slowly getting worse! I'm now at 90miles and 18.2mpg for the tank. This weekend was a combo of more city driving (Driving thru Norman OK on the day of a OU game really doesnt help) and temps dropping to the lower 30's. My average mph is under 30mph, the last time it was under 30 was during one of ice/snow storms last year. I would need to get 21.7mpg over the next 450miles to bring my average back up to 21mpg. I would need to get 20.5mpg over the next 430miles to bring my average back up to 20mpg.

We just got back from our little 3 days holiday. I'm very tired and now I wish just announce I got my 2nd best result this far! 2.71l/100km, over 86mpg for ~410kms (too tired to calculate miles, I'm barely awake)! Yay! Little hills, much coasting...
Still, it was a surprise. There were high speed for long periods, some braking (I'm not used to that type of roads, too steep slopes, some sudden sharp turn and I'm a beginner anyway. I did what I could. probably few little braking don't matter but I dislike them so much)... And we weren't high where density of air could make a real difference... Whatever :D
More data later, I need some rest.

I started to keep the logs for my Ciliegia :)
My last 3 tanks, I refueled my bike during our holiday trips 3 times, once too early but I wished to separate this trip from my usual ones (and anyway, it's funny to refuel two bikes at once at the same pump):

2.895 L/100km (81.256 US MPG) for 421.8 kms (262.09 miles)
2.708 L/100km (86.86 US MPG) for 419.5 kms (260.67 miles)
3.041 L/100km (77.347 US MPG) for 214.4kms (133.22 miles)

There were no lovely slopes for the majority of the third one :(.

Oh and there was a red light at a railway crossing. I stopped the engine and the car behind me did the same :D It was nice, car owners here tend to keep the engine running even if they stop at the house and talk for 10 minutes... :(

I wonder what my results would be if I hadn't followed Alvaro... I surely would have rode somewhat quicker and I'd spare some braking. I tried to keep a big distance but it's not so easy if my desired speed is higher. We will get another map and ride separately if needed. I don't like to adapt to someone else, it can be very stressful sometimes.
