Welcome to November!!

No driving for me just yet -- I'm working from home so I can take my sister's family to the airport this afternoon.

Nice little commute this morning to work. Not my best mileage but I think as the weather gets cooler I'm going to be well pleased with anything over 70 mpg.
Had a great commute back home. Anything above 60 is outstanding.

73.3 MPG / 11.0 Miles home to work
62.5 MPG / 12.0 Miles work to home

64 degrees and 100%+ humidity. (really. There was mist floating in the air.)

75.3 mpg / 13.0 miles. Home-school-work.

The tank is at 76.3 / 293 miles and ~7/8 on the gauge.

Finally got around to putting in the tank my brother in law finished for me. It wasn't pretty -- the lowest since I got my ScanGauge at 40.1mpg over only 485.7mi. :( On the other hand, it was still well above EPA and the tank did last me 1yr 10 days. ;)

I dropped my sister and her family off at the airport this afternoon. I've got some work to pull this tank average up but I'm off to a decent start (first I've driven it since the tank fill on Saturday).

50F, 6mph wind from the S, sunny:

52.3mpg for 77.6mi (Home to airport and back -- headwind down, tailwind back)

The tank average is currently at 41.3mpg over 152.9mi with 12.3g left and the guess gauge indicates roughly one needle width below 15/16.

Great temperature.... No sunshine like the whole last week except Monday... A small trip for today, not a ride for joy but I finished a tank.
3.04L/100km
77.326 MPG

I suspected my change of mood resulting in more brave and temperamental riding will make my results worse... And I had some extremely slow trips (bad quality but funny roads, many villages with sharp curves and insanely low speed limits ;)). I could do better but my main goal is to enjoy my rides and improve my skills. I'm just a beginner biker...

Teresa has new results today too. 3.02l/100km (77.813MPG)
I need some cute roads with sharp curves and fiiine slopes to beat her... Alvaro has his obligate roads and Teresa is more sensitive to the cold... There must be some way to win... My temperament and Ciliegia's worse efficiency at highway speed (shorter gears, worse Cd due to her wonderful big windshield that protects me from wind and insects) is against me... Pulse and glide doesn't help at higher speed...
And I never use some techniques, for example, FAS. I have my reasons but I don't want to write too many not this week specific blurb here.
I need an own topic for my bike...

We will go for our usual eastern trip tomorrow, expect some weaker tank from Teresa...
I plan to ride a lot in November too despite the fact that almost ever biker end the season here and everyone tell us we shouldn't ride, we won't be able to walk later in our life. We use every protection we can and as for me, I ride in the afternoon, in very pleasant weather.

{Don't anyone know a cure for someone who finds great joy in writing about riding her bike...? OTL}

The shortcomings of my new route are rearing their ugly heads. :(

32F, 2mph headwind from the S, clear:

84.3mpg for 15.0mi (Home to work)

The tank is back down to 99.6mpg over 658.6mi with 8 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.

Another nice commute to work this morning.
Decent commute home.

Nice drive home. 80.3 / 10.6 mi / 80 degrees
Rainy this morning. 73.1 / 12.9 / 62 degrees. Good result considering the wet roads.

The tank is down a tick to 76.1 / 326 miles.

Sean, did you use anything like stabil in the fuel to keep it fresh??

epurvee: your putting up some nice numbers there buddy. Gonna be a good close one in div c. I'll be entering a tank sometime the end of the week. I'm sitting at 41.X but thats on the ole SG which in my case is sometime under reporting or over reporting. (hopefully under since i'll need it!) :p

I had a lunch trip for a doctor visit. ~65F

70.2 mpg / 4.4 mi there
100 mpg / 4.4 mi back :D

The tank is back up to 76.3 / 335 miles.

Once again, this highlights the problems with MPG as a unit.
Wrong: (70+100)/2 = 85 mpg
Right:
4.4 / 70 = 0.06285 gal
4.4 / 100 = 0.044
(.044 + .06285) = 0.10685
8.8 / 0.10685 = 82 mpg

Hi, Mike -- no additives necessary. The emissions controls on modern cars are so good I can't tell the difference between new and 1yr old gas in the tank.

I tried but this morning's dismal performance was just too low to overcome. :p

55F, 12-20mph tail/crosswind from the SSW, sunny:

109.9mpg for 15.4mi (Work to home)

The tank is back up to 99.8mpg over 674.0mi with 8 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.

Day Total: 95.4mpg over 30.4mi

32°F? I'm jealous. I drove in at 22°F today. Regen was just so weak that I didn't bother using it. My mileage was okay, all things considered: somewhere in the upper 60's mpg on the way in.

I didn't record mileage on the way home, as I was playing with the FCD button to measure individual segments. Conclusions: pressing the brakes is the worst thing in the world. Also, no surprise, I'm losing most of my mileage in the village I have to cross to get to work, and in the last 1.5mi of congested neighborhood near where I live. If only I had 5mi of AER!

Robert, do you have a Calpod switch? If so, I strongly recommend using it in the cold temps to cancel out that heavy background charge trying to warm up your pack when everything is cold soaked.

We'll have colder temps here soon enough -- I'm glad to take what warmth I can find!

I'm happy that after one week of freezing or nearly temperatures, the current ones forced me to remove the additional lower grill block I added recently :D

But with the winter time (not saving time) I have to switch on the lights the evening too :(

Good commute this morning. A little chilly in GA, about 49 when I left home, but not bad.
Not as great a commute home today but had some wind and it was still cool.

74.5 MPG / 11.0 Miles home to work
56.2 MPG / 15.2 Miles work to home

PaleMelanesian
11-03-2010, 08:11 AM
64.8 mpg / 10.5 mi - home last night, 64 degrees and rain and headwind
68 / 12.9 - this morning, school route, 53 degrees and tailwind

The tank is down* to 75.5 / 358 miles.

* I'm already tired of using that word. It's only November, so there's a lot more of that coming. :(

Will epurvee and Andrew finish over 75MPG ?

Bets are open... ;)

This time a year ago I posted a 72 tank. My skills are better now, but my route is worse. My bet goes to beating 70 but not reaching 75.

We're back from the East again. This time we got really fine weather, it was over 10C almost all the time, no rain, no wind... could fill with decent gas again, it felt so good after the last batch that just gave me less power, worse throttle response, surging after revmatches, and more vibration
The average of this tank (almost all 2-up, and mostly the new fill) became 3.25l/100km (72.3mpgUS), and I'm really satisfied with it, I haven't got this good average 2-up with luggage for a long time.
Anyway, I use more DWL than P&G lately (at least I do so with extra weight). I don't have too much headroom though, most of this route is flat, save for a few overpasses. Of course I take the opportunity to coast before towns, roundabouts and traffic lights (have a few) :)
And there's a nice hilly backroad before we'd reach the Budapest bypass, I coast pretty much there :)

54F, 20-28mph headwind from the NW, partly cloudy:

98.9mpg for 15.4mi (Work to home)

We'll have colder temps here soon enough -- I'm glad to take what warmth I can find!Oh yeah, we don't background regen around here. That is, unless a negative recal sets my SoC to zero bars. Then I can't stop the regen, and I can't even FAS.

I somehow pulled 61/82mpg today. One of these days, I'll dig up my GPS to measure the elevation difference. Today, though, technique and temperature were responsible for most of the spread.

Colder this morning and that wind was really hurting.

38F (31F windchill), 12mph cross/tailwind from the NW, clear:

The tank is steady at 99.6mpg over 719.6mi with 7 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.

cold (ish) and drizzly rain. 10+ mph north wind

69.7 / 10.5 - home
78.8 / 8.8 - out to music practice
64.7 / 9.2 - back home, late
66.6 / 12.9 - this morning, with school delivery

The tank is down (again! sigh...) to 74.8 / 400 miles. 3/4 on the gauge.

-----------------------------
I think a new battery will be in order soon. I'm grid-charging it at night, but it can't take any load. It's ~12V resting, 11.8 with the car powered up. Headlights on and it immediately drops to 11.4V and then drifts down toward 11.0.

It's 2 years old. I'm hard on it: heavy FASing (>> 50% of the time), a minimal alternator to start with that's likely weaker now, and a tiny battery.

Okay, this wind stuff is getting absurd. I was almost home before I ever even saw 90mpg. :(

44F (36F windchill), 19-30mph headwind from the NNW, sunny:

93.5mpg for 15.6mi (Work to home with a slight detour)

The tank is now down to 99.4mpg over 735.2mi with 7 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.

Day Total: 94.4mpg over 30.6mi

Red lights stomped me this morning. That and not having my normal parking slot open killed the numbers. :p

23F, 3mph crosswind from the WNW, clear:

87.4mpg for 15.0mi (Home to work)

The tank is down to 99.1mpg over 750.3mi with 7 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.

I think my 100+mpg tank goal is toast...

PaleMelanesian
11-05-2010, 08:15 AM
A red light stomped me badly, too. I lost 2-3 mpg from that one light. Raced up to 55 mph (the limit) thinking I could make it, but I got slammed.

69.7 / 10.4 home last night. Crazy ~20 mph headwind.
66.7 / 12.9 this morning. Could have been 68-69 without that bad light.
The tank is down to 74.2 / 427 miles. Not looking good for that 75 average.

The battery is very low, and now my charger has quit. It was a $7 Harbor Freight model a year old - expected lifespan I guess. I was down to 10.7V at one point this morning. MUST bump-start, as I can't trust the starter at that voltage. I need to replace both - the charger and the battery.

Right Lane Cruiser
11-05-2010, 08:23 AM
Andrew, was that the charger you mounted under the hood? I found one for that same purpose over at Pep Boys (haven't installed it yet) but it cost me a lot more than $7! :o

PaleMelanesian
11-05-2010, 09:31 AM
That's right. It's essentially a power brick that puts out ~13V 14W. I mounted it against the inner fender, on the other side of the air intake, so it's been separated from the worst engine heat. It was from Harbor Freight (cheap in all senses of the word), and on sale at that!

Hey, it's on sale again right now! (http://www.harborfreight.com/automatic-battery-float-charger-42292.html)

PaleMelanesian
11-05-2010, 01:26 PM
I went home for lunch. ~60F and clear, with a 10 mph north wind.

66.0 / 10.5 going home, into the wind
93.4 / 10.7 back to work, tailwind and warmed up and back on my old route without the school detour. :D

The tank is up to 74.4 / 448 miles.

Nice work, Andrew! I only managed to maintain my tank average... but I'm glad for that!

44F (39F windchill), 8mph headwind from the NW, sunny:

100.8mpg for 15.4mi (Work to home)

The tank is steady at 99.1mpg over 765.7mi with 6 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.

Day Total: 93.7mpg over 30.5mi (The extra tenth is from parking elsewhere at work)

This week so far:

Wednesday: End of the last tank counts to the present, it's a 2-up segment in rain, back from the Budapest bypass (M0 South). Thursday morning commute is also before the last fillup (but after the low fuel light came out).

The days since then have nice afternoons, 10+C (50+F) even after sunset, mornings are like 5C(41F). I got no more rain on my commutes, but the road is often damp. Main problem on the bike is fog these mornings. Once I even had to brake because I hit a wall of thick fog and my helmet's visor got so hazy I couldn't see anything in an instant. In the middle of a curve. While gliding. I wasn't happy at all. Yesterday and today it was better. Still foggy, but not that much.

Tomorrow we'll come to town to visit the electricity provider, a real estate agency and maybe a Belgian pub :) On the day after we'll have a look at a house in a very nice little town not too far. I'd be happy if we could buy one quickly out of the flat and our savings :) Then we'd have the price of the garage and the cottage (they're not sold yet) for furniture, a small car (for heavy stuff and more than 2 people) and driving license too.

According to the forecast the next two days will be rainy - we'll possibly go by Teresa only. It deteriorates my average a bit, but the mpg per person is clearly better :)

A red light stomped me badly, too. I lost 2-3 mpg from that one light. Raced up to 55 mph (the limit) thinking I could make it, but I got slammed.
Alvaro didn't mention but he always coasts before traffic lights (I hope heavy traffic is an exception). Red or green, doesn't matter. If it's green, maybe it will be red soon. Why to hurry, it will be green again later but braking would be a tragedy. It's the element in his extreme hypermiler riding style that I hate most... (especially when the red catches only me who went slowly just because of him)
I ride alone nowadays :D much more relaxing... and quick... mmmmm.

Temperature was almost summer like in the afternoons. Sunny and warm! I went to some short joyrides and yesterday a little longer one. I met a lot of bikers on the roads, it's weekend, after all.
My average speed is slightly above 60km/h, there's many villages, bumpy, curvy roads and I'm not a very skilled or brave one.
I expect something around 3l/100km (78 MPG) like last time... Or worse, I plan to ride on a wonderful place soon where low speed is a sin :D

It seems there won't be rain just gloomy weather tomorrow. I probably will ride then. I'm not fond of being a luggage in the back.

(And I think Alvaro's offtopic blurb about my immovable properties is a bit too much but I must reply I will buy a lovely dirt bike and new motorbike clothes too... Some safety tranings and Ciliegia need to get rid of the memories I learned with her and fell a bit too many times :D Only the broken down rear brake were replaced this far. Well I plan to buy all this stuff after I get a job.)

The Ugly - My computer's external hard drive crapped out and I lost my fuel spreadsheet. I kept detailed logs since I purchased the truck

The Bad - My cruise control crapped out, I'm guessing it is probably a fuse.

The GOOD - Though all the details were lost, I did transfer the fuel used and miles driven info to cleanmpg logs in Sept, so I can still go back and use the data to perform any calculations. At this time last year (look at the line graph) as the temp started to drop, so did my MPG. I have been working hard to improve my coasting and with the Cruise control busted, I have began to practice driving with load. Yesterday I took a field trip from Moore OK to Stillwater OK using I-35, OK-66, & US-177. The driving with load really came in handy since the drive was a bit hilly (relative to OK). Driving to Stillwater (w/ the wind) I got 22.9mpg, Driving back (against the wind) I got 21.9mpg. I was very impressed with the 22.9 since the low that morning in the OKC Metro was 27-31F. The wind that day was about 15-20mph, so I was also happy with the 21.9mpg.

This current tank is at 330miles, and currently the scan guage shows 21.3mpg, the gas guage is currently in between the 1/4 - 1/2 mark (but is a bit closer to the 1/2 mark). Looking at the graph, I'm very happy I have been able to maintain my mpg into the month of November.

Nice work, Deleond2! I hope you noticed that you can download your mileage logs from CleanMPG...

I drove 'Lantrific this morning to Church by myself to give the wife and kid a chance to sleep in.

47F out, 55F back, 5mph head/tailwind from the SSE, sunny:

56.2mpg for 16.8mi (Home to Church)
63.5mpg for 16.8mi (Church to home... lost 0.3mpg stopping to open the garage door )

The tank is now up to 43.8mpg over 185.3mi with 11.8g left and the guess gauge indicates 7/8ths.
