I'm ready for the Cowtown Marathon (http://www.cowtownmarathon.org/) in Fort Worth at 7:30am Saturday, but the weather may not be so nice. They are forecasting rain 20-40mph. It's also going to rain - hope it will finish by the start time. Temperatures will be from 40 to 69F.

I usually finish in 5 hours 30 minutes - would love to go under 5 hours, but the weather may not cooperate.

Long distance running is like hypermiling in many ways. I almost always start too fast - and pay for it at the end of the race. The average person after they carb up can store only 2000 calories - enough for 20 miles before "hitting the wall". You hope to extend that with a number of long runs (15-20 miles) in the couple of months before the race, improved stride, and the leg muscles getting more efficient.

I'd love to meet someone that could help on stride. It's sort of like low-resistance tires and figuring the best rpm while driving. A slight bounce in the stride reduces resistance. Want to have a longer stride without "lugging".

Delta Flyer,

Good luck on the run, and I hope for good weather.

I ran the AT&T half marathon here in Austin last weekend, and am thinking about doing the full marathon next year. I too caught myself comparing it to hypermiling. Going out too fast was like using too much EV too soon and having to recoup later. Also, in those west Austin hills I was definitely "running with load" for peak efficiency.

One thing I DON'T do is "RWB", except AFTER I'm done and need a cool down :)

mparrish,

I forgot Fort Worth has a significant amount of hills - too. Later on I'll show picture of the dust storm hitting Fort Worth - looked like LA on an ozone alert day. Sandy colored sky - you could taste sand. Wind has been gusting up to 50mph - must be what Colorado got that caused that 35-car accident (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14133568/). When I got back to my house, three houses had parts of their privacy fence blown down. :(

Did not set a personal record, but the wind probably would have prevented that. Just glad to have completed another one. If fact, I slowed down to chat with someone that it turned out was on his first marathon since getting chemo five times for his leukemia. :woot:

That came up when I mentioned doing blood platets about every two weeks. This past Tuesday, the blood bank did what they normally don't do and get a few red blood cells. That had me concerned about my speed and endurance (although I've been in better shape - this run took 6hr 26min). This guy is involved in Team in Training (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Team_in_Training) - a group that runs and raises money for leukemia - a great cause.

He thinks he got 75 units of blood - a lot. One things that makes me very angry is the typical car accident victim will need 100 units of blood...that could have gone to leukemia and other ill patients. As I drove out of Fort Worth towards Dallas, the wind was gusting up to 50, but at 3pm some were driving as fast as 80 like it was already happy hour. Heck, I was going 65 during part of the trip back.
