View Full Version : Red Light Camera Abuse
Chuck 10-14-2010, 05:34 PM To make it easy for you, in the past I have supported in principal speeding and red light cameras.
So why am I ranting about my second right light camera ticket in 18 months?
Because I travel thru ten North Texas communities with them and only one is an issue - Plano.
The timing of the lights and the length of the yellow light is calculated to increase citations and take precedence over traffic safety it allegedly  is intended for. Seriously, I should be ticketed in Carrollton and other communities if I have real violations, but then they have honest yellow light intervals.
Few things are as vulgar than professing to do things in the name of justice or what's right when it's evident money is the driver....see "green" US corn-based ethanol for just one example. The difference of one second, and probably less than that in very light traffic Sunday at 3pm and I get an automated ticket. On a couple of tollways and US75 in Plano, hundreds if not thousands are going 85, sometimes weaving like they stole the car.
Money speaks: they prefer to beat up on those that are law abiding the vast majority of the time and give a blind eye to the hundreds that could be the next to commit vehicular homicide.
PaleMelanesian 10-15-2010, 08:49 AM And to think, there was a proposal that stalled in the state senate last year, to require camera intersections to have longer yellows than standard. This is Texas, though, where's it's all about the businesses.
We had a state politician that wants them installed here in Pa. His reasoning and I'm not kidding is the state and municipalities need the additional revenue that these red light camera produce. Not for safety but revenue for the politicians to spend.
PaleMelanesian 10-15-2010, 09:13 AM How about spending less? Huh? Anyone?

No, don't be ridiculous!
Hi Andrew:

Since I live in Illinois, what does "Politicians spending less" really mean let alone is it even close to a realistic goal? If the economy does not pick up including jobs, IL goes bankrupt in < 3-years. Our interest payments alone are overwhelming program needs yet the IL politico's keep borrowing...
To reduce Government spending, the governor put into place an austerity plan that all new hires will have their pensions reduced. WTF does 45-years from now have to do with saving the budgets while many IL Government retirees are receiving 90 + % of their last paychecks and that are indexed to inflation or better! It was great to be a teacher just 3-years ago in IL as you are guaranteed to have $1-million per year coming in if you live to be 90 years. I am sorry but most of us in IL do not receive but a fixed $2k/month w/ no health care when I reach 65 and I am in better straights than most after 20-years in a good paying private industry! $15K per year in Real Estate taxes is insane let alone 7 to 10% on purchases and a 3% income tax on top of that.
All said, I am considering a move to somewhere else. Maybe MT, ID or WY given those are about the only sane states left in the country when it comes to spending priorities and needs vs. wants.
Texas always comes out of these in pretty good shape but CA, NY, NV, IL and FL are in for a very rough go of it over the next few years unless they get off the Credit Card and right damn now!!!
****** End Rant ******
Now back to the topic at hand…
Red Light cameras suck so just make damn sure when you see a yellow, you jump on the brakes. It is like speed limits. We cannot afford a ticket so do not tempt fate.
Good Luck to us all.

New Hampshire is probably the least taxed state in the nation.

It can tell if you are speeding and take a pic of the driver and plates, check to see if your car is insured, check to see if you are tailgating, and check to see if you are wearing a seatbelt. It uses a wireless internet connection to pull driver data and issues the ticket or tickets all be itself.
Damionk 11-11-2010, 03:45 PM One thing I would be concerned about is if someone cuts me off in front of those and it tags me for tailgating.
some_other_dave 11-12-2010, 01:45 PM One of many, many reasons that I think a person should always be the one issuing the tickets. There may be other circumstances that the machine doesn't know about. And lord knows these machines ain't perfect! (I'm a SW engineer by profession, and trust me; there are bugs in everything!)

My code doesn't have bugs, it just doesn't handle all possible cases.

I'm late to the party in this thread, but IL really is already bankrupt. We used to do IL funded projects at work until the banks pulled the plug on the outfit the bought IL IOU's from us. Apparently banks don't think IL's paper is good any more.
Two weeks ago I couldn't get a price quote from a landfill until I promised that my project was not IL funded. Apparently basic utility services have the same opinion of the state as my employer. IL is still covering payroll, pensions and bond payments, but everybody else they owe is getting killed. If they were a business they would already be done.
Damionk 11-15-2010, 01:58 PM Chuck, you will probably be glad to hear this.
