Tesla Motors Inc. is close to naming a location in the West for its first U.S. factory, where it will build an expensive electric sedan, several newspapers are reporting.
Gov. Jennifer Granholm made a pitch to Tesla founder and Chief Executive Martin Eberhard in January to put the $100-million, 300-worker Tesla plant in Michigan.
Tesla already picked Rochester Hills for an engineering center that's expected to employ 50 to 60 engineers.
On Friday, the Albuquerque Tribune Web site quoted a New Mexico economic development spokeswoman as saying she was preparing a press release to announce the factory will be built in Albuquerque. Later she said the state would not make any announcements Friday. The Contra Costa (Calif.) Times reported that Tesla had narrowed the search to Albuquerque and Pittsburgh, Calif. Flagstaff, Ariz., officials also thought their city was in the running.
