On 9/20/11, my wife and I drove to one of the Metro hospitals and baby #2 two is healthy!!!! But with the wife in the hospital, I have been getting some time behind the wheel of her Ford Explorer.

Monday I drove my wife to the hospital. Today I drove back to the house to pick up some stuff and then back to the hospital. I drove approx 66miles total, >90% of that being hwy. The Trip computer showed 25.0mpg.

Other than some occasional coasting in Neutral, all I did was follow the posted speedlimit of 60mph. I'm very impressed a large SUV could get 25mpg mainly by driving the speed limit.

We at CleanMPG have been telling people this for years. Speed kills gas mileage and people that argue that it doesn't just shows how little they can comprehend the laws of Physics.

Take my 960 for example with a 2.9L 24V I6 rated at 181HP.

I drive it at the speed limits which are as high as 70 mph on a trip to Florida it gets 25.5 mpg. If I drive it at a maximum of 65 mph or the speed limit it gets around 27.5 to 28 mpg.

I did some testing with the 960 a few years ago when I was down in Florida on Rt 41 a two lane between Naples and Miami.

50 mph 35.4 mpg
55 mph 33.9 mpg
60 mph 31.15 mpg
65 mph 28.5 mpg

And congratulations on baby number 2.

Congratulations on the new arrival:D:D. Can you imagine what you would get with a Prius, Insight2 or something like that. Probably 60-70 mpg!!!:Banane32: H

Driving at-or-under the limit (it is the upper limit, LOL: funny how people "remember" when there's a cop around, well unless that cop is tailgating), saves you gas both by the lower speed being more fuel efficient, and by less acceleration to get to that speed. Another benefit: you're less likely to be in an accident, get killed, and so on.

Congrats on the new arrival ;)

I remember driving through the dead-of-night on deserted roads with wife and 2 kids in-back, heading for the hospital when she was in labour for our 3rd: she would calm down for a while, I would slow down, start thinking about U-turn and heading back home. Then she would get another contraction, I would speed up again, LOL.

You are preaching to the choir. When my truck hits 100K miles (it has 80K now), I plan to give it to my brother. I cant wait to get something where my efforts will have a bigger pay-off. I'm not sure if the prius/insight would be right for me, but I'm looking at the Escape/fusion hybrids. I have plenty of time to do research.

Well that is good! You will enjoy your results and enjoy what-ever Hybrid you purchase. They show you how to drive? H

He means that the built in gauges do a good job of giving you enough information to fine tune your driving for fuel economy. If you have a scangauge, you already have most of that benefit in broad terms, but the built in instrumentation in a hybrid really helps you learn how to take advantages of its unique capabilities.

Using the same Explorer as above my wife and I took a trip to Gainsville TX for a friend's wedding.

HOME - Moore OK (elevation according to wikipedia is 1253ft)
DESTINATION - out in the boonies, 7miles south of Gainsville TX (Elevation 751ft)

Round trip - 266miles

The Explorer's Trip Computer read out 24.7mpg for the trip. I'm surprised it did this well since it was my wife, the two kids, me, and a little bit of gear to stay the night. Another thing to remember, the last 84 miles of the trip was with E10. The speed limit is 70mph on I-35, but I drove 65mph. AND MY WIFE DIDNT COMPLAIN!! If I had a dollar for every car that passed me.............
