I took my xB on a scenic drive from Bryce Canyon National Park to Boulder, UT on Utah Hwy 12 today. It's called Hell's Backbone, because part of it is on a ridge with 1500 ft drops on both sides. It's all downhill from the park (8000' elevation). I got 140 mpg for the first 12 miles, 71.9 mpg for the first 48 miles, and 55+ mpg at my turnaround point, 75 miles from the park.
On my way back, of course, I have to gain back the elevation (47.5 mpg for the total 150 miles). An idiot in a pickup truck with camper shell couldn't wait for a passing zone to pass me. He tried to pass twice against a double yellow line. The first time, an oncoming car forced him to drop back. The second time, an oncoming motorcycle had to send up a blue cloud of tire smoke to slow down and pull over, while the camper truck had to back down from his impatient, illegal, life-endangering idiocy.
After the second near-miss, the camper dropped back and waited for a legal passing zone.
