Just how popular will electric cars prove to be once they are widely available? --Ed.

The largest electric appliance in your home may soon be your car.

Last August, Southern California Edison launched a whole new division in anticipation of growth in the use of electric cars.

Steve Powell, SCE's manager of plug-in electric vehicle readiness, said the company expects 100,000 electric vehicles to be on the roads of Southern California within 10 years.

On Wednesday the company launched the online Plug-in Car Rate Assistant, which estimates the cost of fueling an electric vehicle, as well as the possible savings that would come from switching to one of Edison's electric vehicle rate plans.

"We really wanted our customer to have a better understanding of the various rate plans," Powell said. "The online car rate assistant will provide an idea of the bill impacts and the benefits of charging electric vehicles."

Dollars are flowing from several directions for EV development. Money coming from the private sector is gaining as well.
