First the good news. Todays Arizona Republic front page headlines read "Hybrids OK'd for HOV lane". This will allow 9000 Toyota Prius, Honda Insight and Civic Hybrid cars to use the HOV lanes with the proper plate. The federal Energy Efficient Pilot Program opens the lanes to drivers of vehicles that achieve a 45% increase in combined city/highway fuel efficiency.
Now the bad news. Roughly 10000 "bifueled" vehicles that run on gasoline and an alternative fuel such as propane will be banned from the HOV lanes in 90 days.
This is great news for Hybrid drivers but bad news for the rest of the drivers and especially the bifueled drivers. The whole community suffers now as we will have to share the regular lanes with 1000 more cars. 1000 cars isn't a large number when spread out over the whole city, but if 9000 extra hybrids were in the HOV lanes, it might relive the the regular lanes at least a little bit.....Louis
