Was that a funnel cloud in the background?

Was that a funnel cloud in the background?

It almost looks like a weak one forming, but I think it was just a little rain.
This storm had some rotation at first, but the quickly aproaching cold front, along with a lack of warm humid air quickly put it out...

Hi MT:

Got any more?

Wayne

There was an awsome sunset tonight, unfortunately I was not ready for it, it would have been a great picture frenzy!
oh well, snapped a quickie from the road, doesn't come close to doing it justice, it is what it is....

We have have had over 75 days of temps over 90 degrees which is uncommon for Southern Illinois. A front moved in yesterday and temps this morning were around 50. This pic was taken on my way home from work this morning at a reclaimed strip mine cut that is being developed for houses. This is "Smoke on Scarlet Lake." It was taken with a Motorola Droid.

First chance to try it after reading some tips online. I thought I was going to have to wait til next year, but a line of storms moved through the area saturday late at night, so I figured it would be my last chance! I got to where I wanted to set up, and this huge rain comes in before the main storm, forcing me to shoot from my vehicle. oh well, probably safer that way, though the setting isnt too good for pics.
I have the camera on a tripod and on the "bulb" setting, manual focused on a light across the lake, and started taking pics toward where I was seeing some flashes, using 30 second exposures with a wireless remote. if I saw a flash of lightning, I would stop and start a new one. I got a couple of flashes, but wasn't sure it worked, I could not see the bolts with my eyes, just the flash. Soon the quick little t-shower was gone, and I checked, took about 20 pics, and the two that I took had some lightning images! whoohoo, it worked! I can't wait til next years storm season starts now!

I've taken a few pics today, of the frost in the neighborhood. Also, this is one of my commute routes, I just rarely see it in daylight in this half of the year. It's been pretty foggy in the last 2 weeks, and it often froze on everything it could find.
Thankfully the road is not icy now, so I can continue commuting.

That's some snow :D
We have only 6cm (~2.5") of it, though it's falling again.
We're in the less snowy part of the country. But close to the coldest spot now. At least not at night, the coldest I saw this night was -15.5C (4F).

I'm fed up with this cold. There's no such thing as 'wasted' electricity anymore, every single drop becomes precious heat. Which goes out through the walls. So it's wasted in the end. Our consumption at least doubled in this cold, on the top of burning wood. We really need that insulation.

Yes Sean - I believe it is! Same engine as my car but ~20% better FE as it's smaller, lighter and more aerodynamic.
They also had some new shape Civics in the showroom - they look better in the flesh.
The boot/trunk on the Insight is quite shallow I thought as well - due the battery pack I expect with an extra well underneath as there was no spare (an option I believe) but it wasn't as small as the CR-Z;) - nice looking vehicle though :)

Interesting to see the different nose on the Jazz (Fit) in Euro trim. Our crash regulations made them put a longer goofy-looking nose on it.

Some more snow and ice. I was chicken to cross the lake, but at least took a few pics in the process :)

Didn't want to start a new thread due to the short duration, but anyone living in TN, KY, and surrounding areas needs to keep alert to potential for strong tornadoes today and tonight (2/29/2012).

12Z 2/29/2012, sounding at Nashville (BNA) shows very scary helicity (710 - helicity is a measure of low-level shear in the atmosphere)...

http://weather.unisys.com/upper_air/skew/skew_KBNA.gif

Anything above 300 helicity is considered favorable for tornado development. The only saving grace is that the instability is not too impressive... -3.4 LI; 500 CAPE...but further destabilization possible this afternoon if any breaks in overcast develop.

Yup, those storms ripped through here last night in SW MO. 80+ MPH winds with isolated Tornados and golf ball to tennis ball size hail.

Good grief, this is still Feb.

Die2self, You were lucky last night. Those same winds that developed in your area after 11:00 developed into an F4 that did some major damage in my hometown of Harrisburg, IL. So far we have 6 confirmed dead 100's injured and 250 to 300 homes damaged or destroyed.

I hope you weren't directly impacted by that EF4!

Looks like today could be active again in your general area, and there's already a "moderate" risk of severe weather in the Tennessee valley for tomorrow (3/2/2012). A day two moderate risk is unusual and could be upgraded to a high risk tomorrow when the new day one is issued.

we were fine with it passing by us this time. When the EF5 came through Joplin on May 22 last year it passed by our house only 2 blocks away.

There has been a lot of rebuilding but the track is still pretty barren.

Be safe out there.

I am off work tomorrow and helping to move furniture out of damaged houses. Our local TV weatherman posted today about the imposing weather coming Friday. This morning he said, "The question is not if there will be a tornado, but where will it be and how big?

As expected, SPC has raised the threat level to high risk over central Kentucky and Middle Tennessee for today (3/2/2012) with today's day one issuance...

http://www.spc.noaa.gov/

There's a moderate risk surrounding the high risk that includes the Ohio River Valley through the Tennessee River Valley, including S. Illinois and East Tennessee.

Hi All:

With over a year since the last post regarding tornadoes, here is a Super Cell out of Kansas that looks very ominous!

It could be photochopped but it looks nasty in any case.

I got out on lake Waconia early St Patricks day morning to shoot some photos of the northern lights. I brought along my auger and fish trap just to set up some interesting pictures, I didn't even bring a rod.
