The $19,195 to start, 2011 Hyundai Sonata heading towards the Pacific.

Hyundai reached sales of 53,603, down 11 percent compared with the all-time sales record set in August 2009 when the successful “Cash for Clunkers” program was in place. August marked the third best volume month in company history, saw a 5.3 percent retail market share -- the highest market share ever achieved -- and delivered the 20th consecutive month of retail market share gains. For the year, Hyundai has reported cumulative sales of 363,491, up 17 percent versus the same period in 2009, and remains on track to establish an all-time sales record for the full year.

Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America’s vice president of national sales added the following: “Consumer demand for our products remains strong, and as we take aggressive action to increase production of high-demand vehicles and improve dealer supply, we feel we’re well-positioned for growth over the remaining four months of this year. We’re preparing to launch our flagship Equus sedan and are introducing three additional new products to our lineup in the fourth quarter, backed by an ambitious media plan to ensure we maintain our momentum in the face of challenging market conditions.”

2011 Sonata vs. Competitor August Sales Comparisons

As the new Sonata is finding its way to more customers hands, it is now holding solid in third palce and nipping at the heels of the ubiquitous Accord for second place standing.

Make|Model|Sales

Toyota|Camry|30,764
Honda|Accord|25,148
Hyundai|Sonata|21,399
Chevrolet|Malibu|18,182
Ford|Fusion|17,082

On a year-over-year basis, Elantra, Sonata and Tucson sales increased 21 percent, 50 percent and 139 percent, respectively. Genesis set another all-time sales record in August and is up 27 percent for the year – this marks the 14th consecutive month of year-over-year sales gains for Genesis. The strength of this broad product lineup and the overall reduction in incentive spending is continuing to have a positive impact on residual values.

On a year-over-year basis, Elantra sales increased 21 percent
This is impressive, when the new model is imminent.

Hi Andrew:

Can you break away for the LA Auto Show Press Event this year as I believe the new Elantra will be released? If there is anyone that needs to drive one for a review, that would be you!

Good Luck

Wayne

I'll have to think on that, Wayne. Great idea, though!

What I am seeing so far on the next Elantra is an engine of 1.6, 1.8, or 2.0L (speculation on any of the three) - a smaller version of the Sonata 2.4L, and either a 6MT or 6AT. For EPA estimates, I would guess anywhere from "matching the comparable Cruze" to 1-2mpg more than the Cruze on each cycle.

Not long after the new Elantra, we will see the new Accent here. There is little known about the next Accent, other than the Korean and Chinese market versions have a 1.6L engine and 5MT/4AT. The hatch has gone away in the new version, with only a 4 door sedan appearing, but I have seen pictures of camo development mules in a 5 door hatch body shell. It looks like a "fluidic sculpture" version of a 3:4 scale Elantra Touring. No word on what North America will see, but I suspect the Accent will have the same layout as the Asian-market version. That would position the Accent as low-cost transportation and Elantra as slightly larger and better equipped. But who knows - Hyundai may head in the opposite direction and offer the 6AT/6MT in the Accent, charge the extra few bucks for the pricier hardware, and position it as "FE champion". I guess we'll all know by next summer.

Hyundai's John Krafcik has been rumored to say there won't be an Accent or Elantra hybrid because the cost doesn't make sense in smaller cars with low sticker prices. But in the same web chat, he also alluded to a dedicated hybrid model available within a few years. So it appears that we will see the Elantra platform with a hybrid drivetrain, but offered as a distinct model, similar to the Prius.
