View Full Version : Week of August 16th - August 22nd 2010 (Nat Avg $2.76)
Right Lane Cruiser 08-16-2010, 07:38 AM Welcome back! I had my first commute to the new job... it is mostly uphill and I had some wind to contend with. :p
58F, 7mph cross/headwind from the WSW, clear:
95.8mpg for 15.1mi (Home to work)
The tank is back down to 112.0mpg over 817.9mi with 14 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
LinuxGold 08-16-2010, 07:40 AM Good Morning Sean!!!
epurvee 08-16-2010, 07:42 AM Due to a trip that my wife had planned, but didn't tell me about until Friday, I wasn't able to swap out my catalytic converter, so the metro is still driving a little crippled.
62.3 MPG / 11.0 Miles home to work
LinuxGold 08-16-2010, 07:45 AM 274 miles a little less than 3/4 (1.881 gallons topped off on this refill) guessing 50-53 MPG

62.3 MPG / 11.0 Miles home to work
Crippled, but managed to save more gas than EPA rating than most HEALTHY metro can (due to drivers, of course...) =)
PaleMelanesian 08-16-2010, 08:19 AM 92.7 this morning for me, 80 degrees. Maybe rain this evening, and I welcome it!
Tank is back up to its best-ever 84.6 mpg. 904 miles and on the low side of 1/4 tank.

Thanks for the complement Scott. It was so encouraging to get those numbers that were up in the 80's, but then very defeating to see them drop down.
jcp123 08-16-2010, 10:13 AM I'm getting my glides down in the Volvo. Seems to be an OK car for coasting, and when I hit neutral, it's got a little idle problem that idles it down to 500rpm :D I'm shooting for 22mpg this tank as I get more comfortable with it. Maybe I'll steal back the Scangauge I gave my Dad when I sold my SVT Focus.

Your dad might be hypermiling by the time you try to steal back... =)

Nice thought...it's on a 1-ton dually 4x4 Duramax Chevy though, so all the king's horses and all the king's men...still won't do much for that.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-16-2010, 04:51 PM Well, the route I picked to try coming home was definitely a bad choice. :( I struggled to even keep it up over 80mpg for 3/4 of the trip. :ccry: I won't be doing that again!!! :p
76F, 17-24mph cross/headwind from the W, mostly sunny:
88.3mpg for 14.8mi :ccry: (Work to home through terrible terrible traffic)
The tank is all the way down to 111.3mpg over 832.7mi with 14 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 91.8mpg over 29.9mi
Gas-x 08-16-2010, 05:17 PM Well started work today! I drove 79.6 miles to work @ 42.6mpg and trip home was 78.5 miles at 40.5mpg. Had some traffic as I get done at 3:15. Both trips were basically 65 mph with cruise...:p I will play around with it some more and improve that easy.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-16-2010, 05:39 PM You got a job?? Congratulations!!!! :woot: :D :D :D
Gas-x 08-16-2010, 05:41 PM Yeah job today was in plymouth. Little drive from Pine City....
Right Lane Cruiser 08-16-2010, 06:42 PM Really? I work in Plymouth now. Where were you and is it a recurring job?
Oainac 08-16-2010, 07:15 PM Home to Trumpet Lessons 35.4MPG over 5.9Miles
Trumpet Lessons to Home 41.8MPG over 5.9Miles (That's a new record for that trip!)
Only 60 more miles on this tank of gas. So i'll have to fill up this week.
Die2self 08-16-2010, 07:37 PM home>work

work>home
= 25.9 / 13.2 miles (88F NE@9 Gusting to 18) Feels good yo!
Daily avg = 24.4 / 26.2 miles
tank is just on the F mark with 56.9 miles on the ODO.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-17-2010, 07:06 AM Well well. It seems that morning route I took yesterday has more potential than it appeared at first. ;)
53F, 1mph headwind from the SW, clear:
107.6mpg for 15.0mi (Home to work)
The tank is steady at 111.3mpg over 847.8mi with 13 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
I will not be taking the route I tried yesterday afternoon ever again. :p
LinuxGold 08-17-2010, 07:50 AM Drove from Magnolia, DE to Royal Farms in Elkton, MD using Abilene (Camry) last night:
39.23 MPG (206.47% of EPA)
56.03 miles
1.43 gallons of gas used
38 mph AVG
PaleMelanesian 08-17-2010, 08:18 AM 86.0 mpg home
92.1 this morning
The tank is now solidly at 84.6 mpg, with 936 miles and a low 1/4 on the gauge. 936 was a record until my last two tanks. :D
epurvee 08-17-2010, 08:19 AM I am sick of this ultra humidity we are having. It makes not running the AC a very tough choice.
62.2 MPG / 11.0 Miles home to work
jcp123 08-17-2010, 09:03 AM Didn't nail my glides this morning :( I woke in the middle of a sleep cycle, so I'm having a hard time waking up, and I just wasn't paying enough attention to my driving.
Oainac 08-17-2010, 11:27 AM Home to Tennis 37.4MPG over 5.3Miles
Tennis to Home 34.7MPG over 5.7Miles
I have around 50 more miles on this tank so it looks like I will have 440 miles on the tank. I'll have to fill up on Thursday.
PaleMelanesian 08-17-2010, 12:58 PM Home for lunch. It was beautifully scorching hot! ;)
80.8 mpg / 10.8 miles home
105 mpg / 10.7 miles back - there IS some good to the heat.
The tank is way up to 84.8 / 958 miles. :D Well below 1/4 but not to E yet.

Right Lane Cruiser 08-17-2010, 03:54 PM While no where near my numbers for the other route, this is pretty good for only my second commute on the route! I'm not sure I can goose it much further up on a regular basis as it is definitely faster, but I'll try. :)
75F, 9mph tailwind from the S, sunny:
106.2mpg for 15.4mi (Work to home)
The tank is steady at 111.3mpg over 863.2mi with 13 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 106.6mpg over 30.4mi
Avg. Speed over the route home... 21mph :D

PaleMelanesian 08-17-2010, 04:11 PM Sean, what's the profile of this new commute? Types of roads, speeds, # of stops, etc...
Right Lane Cruiser 08-17-2010, 05:15 PM Hi, Andrew... let me see if I can remember all the bits and pieces (satellite and street view aren't quite sufficient).
The initial portion of the trip is the same as the old one... I still have to get out of Anoka in the same direction. That is comprised of 1 stop sign and 9 stop lights over the course of 2.5mi with a speed limit of 30mph. After that there is a section of 35mph road which soon (400' ?) takes a right hand 90* turn and becomes a 50mph limit road. All of this (with the exception of the first 0.8mi on neighborhood streets) is 2 lanes. About 200' after the turn there is another light which I make a right at... then a left 50' later from a turn lane onto a road that tees into the road I leave (there's a stop sign for the terminating road). The speed limit here is 30mph and curves a bit (and uphill) to a stop sign. It is all single lane from that last light.
I don't have the distances memorized from this point forward. That last stop sign is at about the 3.6mi point in my drive.
The route climbs steeply uphill (still at 30mph) and curves a bit until it eventually crosses another road. The cross traffic has no stop signs. I take a left and head uphill, then back downhill maybe 100' to another light... at which I take a right onto a 50mph road. That last left was onto a 2 lane and the 50mph road is two lanes. It is only about 75' from that right until the next light. After that there is a decent stretch (bit over a mile) of fairly deserted road to a construction added stop sign. This is still 50mph but low traffic and 2 lanes. After that it is another 0.5mi or so to a stop light and the road is blocked for construction about 100' after that point. I take a right onto a single lane road marked at 30mph for a short distance, then 45mph until it tees into a 45mph road with a 3 way stop sign. All of this has continued gently uphill. I make a left onto the 45mph limited road and drive for about 0.5mi until it opens up from 1 lane to 2, then continues for another 5.5mi. All of this is uphill with some steep sections and stop lights located on the sides of the steep hills. :p
There are 16 lights on this stretch. After that I make a left onto another 2 lane road marked at 50mph until getting to another light maybe 0.5mi away... then it drops down to 45mph (of course this is all pretty decent sloping uphill). Perhaps 0.2mi from that light I make a left onto a 2 lane industrial blvd type road with a 30mph limit. I only drive on this for another 0.2mi, then take another left onto a single lane road at the same speed limit and continue climbing for another 0.1mi to the work parking lot.
I think I got everything. The route home is just the reverse with my usual downtown Anoka bypass driving which adds 04mi but chops out 4-5 lights. It also adds in either 3 (if I skip 5 lights) or 1 extra stop sign.
I hope that is specific enough. I don't think I'll be seeing anything much higher than about 110mpg on the way to work (if I hit pretty much every light green and don't have any traffic on the single lane portions). It might be slightly better without the construction induced bypass (and somewhat shorter as well). It doesn't look like I'll get the chance to find out anytime soon.

daily avg = 24.6 / 26.4 miles
tank is under F with 83.3 miles
tomorrow is 1st day back to school for #1 child (1st grade now:eek:) #2 start Kindy next year. Tanks going to work are about to take a nose dive.:(
Oainac 08-17-2010, 09:32 PM Went driving with a friend today. He was wondering what the little black box on my dashboard was. I explained what it was and how it can help improve FE. He seemed somewhat interested.
I forgot to record the MPG. It was a relatively short trip <5Miles and around 35MPG according to the SGII.
Gas-x 08-17-2010, 09:53 PM Great story to tell. After work my foreman realized he had left his lights on and that his battery was completely dead! The other guy in the crew had left and he asked if I had any jumper cables. Nope hanging on the wall in garage...great place for them.. anyway he went to ask the plumber on the job if he had any he said no but no sweat I'll get it going for ya. He went in and cut a 10" chunk of electrical wire off of the large spool in the building and took 2 wires which had the insallation on them. the were bother copper. He pounded one end flat on each wire and then went in and got a 18v lithium ion drill battery and jambed the wires in the slots where it would connect to the drill. Touched the wires and nothing happened so the foreman went in to call someone and I said to check another slot on the battery as this brand ( Milwalkee ) had 4 of them. He then touched the wires and it sparked. Battery indicator said 3/4 charge. I hoped in the bosses 94 honda Del Sol with 265,000 mi  and turned the key, turned over twice quickly and popped off and just purred as it charged away!!!!! That was so worth leaving late and being stuck in more traffic to see!:D Jumping a car with a drill battery!:p BTW indicator said need to charge . Drained that battery instantly... So lesson learned here. Make sure you have jumper cables if not a couple of 18vt batts and 10inches of insulated copper wire :D. OR JUST SHUT OFF YOUR LIGHTS! He doesn't have a warning ding to do so and when we arrive at work it is just getting light out. Start at 7 get there at 6:30 or so.
Oainac 08-17-2010, 10:02 PM Wow it's good to know you can jump a car with a drill battery.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-18-2010, 06:51 AM That's a good story!!
Headwind, some clouds (so I needed headlights for about half the trip), and more traffic made the trip closer to what I dealt with on Monday but I was able to be a bit smarter about it since I'm more familiar with the route.
65F, 11mph headwind from the SSW, overcast:
100.3mpg for 15.0mi (Home to work)
The tank is down to 111.1mpg over 878.3mi with 12 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
LinuxGold 08-18-2010, 07:13 AM 387 miles just a little below HALF on the gauge. Some car pulled up into me during my peak Glide, I approached into that car with smart braking, then started P&G into that car as a rubber ball with rubber attached to the wooden pedal. Went up to that car then started Glide from there and stayed on cycle until that car decided to speed off. I then returned back to my normal P&G.
No, I still have not transferred my MPGuino *YET*, been pretty busy in last few days -- being Technology Coordinator at a school when students return (TODAY is the first day) working with 300+ computers, being SINGLE IT guy here is -- *grimances*... :Banane36:
Right Lane Cruiser 08-18-2010, 07:25 AM Good luck with that, Scott!
PaleMelanesian 08-18-2010, 08:44 AM Sean, sorry about the construction. That's a lot of lights and a lot of 2-lane road! Yikes!
------------------
78 mpg home last night
89.7 this morning. It could have been 90+, but entering the work lot I got stuck behind a driver afraid of speed bumps. Slow down to 2 mph, creeeeeep over it, accelerate to 10 mph then brake for the next one. There are five. I usually make the whole thing in one glide, but not today. :p
The tank is at 84.8 / 979 miles. Kilo tomorrow. :D
Right Lane Cruiser 08-18-2010, 08:48 AM Andrew, it is the single lane driving that gets sticky. :p I caught a lot of the lights this morning but still topped 100 so I'll just have to keep trying. I don't think I can find a better route until after that construction lets up.
Good to see you kilotanking again!
PaleMelanesian 08-18-2010, 08:52 AM Andrew, it is the single lane driving that gets sticky. :p
I know what you mean! I do my best to avoid 2-lane, especially the higher speed ones. (>45 mph)
kilo: it'll be a three-pete. :D
jcp123 08-18-2010, 01:18 PM Really getting my glides down now, and I think it's showing. I'm about 20mi ahead of where I was on my last (first) tank at this point, plus I got more highway driving time. Love to get to 25mpg this tank, unfortunately I did have to accelerate hard when a car came up behind me over a blind hill right after I turned.
Sadly, no EOC coasting, I don't feel like toasting my turbo bearings.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-18-2010, 03:47 PM More traffic and still cloudy with some thunder.
71F, 8mph tailwind from the SSW, overcast:
103.6mpg for 14.9mi (Work to home)
The tank is now down to 110.9mpg over 893.2mi with 12 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 101.9mpg over 29.9mi
The gauge is going down pleasingly slowly now. :)
groar 08-18-2010, 03:50 PM Hi,
/me is impressed by all your results...
Andrew, you should reach a distance I'll never be able to dream about...
Sean, do you think your kill switch is helping you significantly ?
My guessgauge, "calibrated" at 4L/100 (58.8mpg) tells me I'm at 760km (472mi), while my odometer tells me 890km (553mi). With my 1500km (932mi) tank I should reach 1750km (1091mi).
To make me a little optimistic : if I consider my wife consumed 4.4L/100 (53.5mpg) during the 120km (75mi) she drove my car, I should reach 1790km (1110mi) with the remaining tank, which is 70mpg (far from my 76mpg goal:( ) and 225%, but which will be a great wife/husband shared record.
Have fun,
Denis.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-18-2010, 05:50 PM Denis, the kill switch is mostly helpful in really cold weather or when I have to have the headlights on... so not very significantly at the moment because I haven't had to use headlights that much in the mornings now that I'm driving an hour later.
You may not hit 76mpg but you are still doing fantastically well!!

What really hurts this route is a severe lack of opportunities to FAS. Even the hills are mostly followed by sufficiently steep new hills that I really need to gain as much momentum between as I can. :p
LinuxGold 08-19-2010, 07:07 AM Currently at 442 miles, in between 1/2 and 1/4 of gauge.

82.2 mpg home, 10.7 miles
92.5 / 10.8 this morning
Tank average 84.8 / 1000.2 miles. I haven't seen the low fuel warning light yet, but it's close. Last tank I had to park facing downhill to get a picture of 999.9 without the light showing.

groar 08-19-2010, 08:22 AM It happened! 000.2 miles on the trip gauge. :D
I remember the 1st time I saw the trip odometer resetting itself to 0.0 :) (which is rather easy here as the distance are in km, 1000km = 621mi)
Currently it's more the 609.0 mark after that reset that make me happy, as I reach 1609km = 1000mi.
Tank average 84.8 / 1000.2 miles.
I know someone who is going to reach 1166.6mi...
Denis.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-19-2010, 08:28 AM Think you can take down Wayne's tank distance in the Civic iCDTi, Andrew? :D
PaleMelanesian 08-19-2010, 08:37 AM Sean, you made me look! :p
1174 miles? That's going to be a stretch. I'm projecting 1150 to a dry tank.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-19-2010, 08:46 AM Let me put it this way. If you manage to top that number you'll have the longest tank on record for an unmodified, non-hybrid vehicle. ;)
LinuxGold 08-19-2010, 08:47 AM Sean, you made me look! :p

epurvee 08-19-2010, 08:49 AM Changed my fuel filter myself this morning. I can see why people pay $50 or more to have someone else do it. Much more hard than changing the oil. Had a decent commute to work, had many good breaks on the lights.
72.3 MPG / 11.0 Miles home to work
The Fridge 08-19-2010, 08:51 AM Wow!
Just got a new record tank, and not just a little better, 52.9 versus the old record of 48.7.
I know it's possible because SentraSE-R has two fills that are even better in his xB. But still, I have to wait 3 weeks for the next tank fill so I can be sure it wasn't a fluke...

41.9 trip home 79mi, little more wind and tried some p&g but didn't time them quite right. So many long gradual hills. Got frustrated!
Tire presure also went up again:D Noticed big difference in glide distance will see how it is at new set psi of 60. I dream of 50 mpgs maybe if I ever figure this P&G out to full potential it will happen and become an expectation over some time! As you can see i'm not patient I look for fast results and need to just chill out and go to work on it. There I vented...
Right Lane Cruiser 08-19-2010, 10:16 PM Remember to be patient and to keep an eye on that trip average. Keep it moving up after every P&G cycle!
Right Lane Cruiser 08-20-2010, 06:47 AM Wet road and typical Friday traffic. I only got dripped on a little bit but the odds are good I'll have to drive home in the rain... possibly heavy rain.

Then TRIED To fill up until I can see gas at the end of tube, when I returned the nozzle, the gas disappeared down the tube - totaling 13.292 (1.563 gallons more)
Since this is my first time, I am guessing to use 11.729 gallons
597.7 miles, 11.729 gallons = 50.959 MPG am I correct?
Now when I tried to fill up to a point that I am able to see gas at end of tube, then after few seconds, it disappeared, does that mean I am filled up to the MAXIMUM? Do I need to fill in a little more until gas stop disappearing?
Thanks,
Scott
Right Lane Cruiser 08-20-2010, 07:39 AM I keep going until the level stay stable.
YLMV ? ;)
LinuxGold 08-20-2010, 07:54 AM what is YLMV?
PaleMelanesian 08-20-2010, 08:03 AM your LEVEL may vary? :p
--------
disappointing 74.6 home last night, then 82.7 this morning. The tank is way down to 84.5 / 1029 miles.
That last 1/8 went really fast. I'm seeing the fuel warning light frequently now. That's only about 10 miles farther than last tank, instead of the projected 30.
groar 08-20-2010, 08:08 AM LinuxGold, seams to be like the prius in Europe...
Officially the tank can hold 45 l. (11.88 gal.) but with patience (around 10 additional minutes) you can have up to 60 l. (15.85 gal.). You have to add fuel until the next click and wait for the gas to disappear. The more fuel was added, the more you have to wait to see it disappear.
I read US prius owners can't do that because they have additional systems (anti flood / anti evaporation IIRC) that would be destroyed if you try to do so.
With my diesel I click twice then add slooowly while looking at the level. First I can see the bubbles that disappear if I wait, then the diesel. Between 2nd click and the top fill I add between 0.95 and 1.1 l. (0.25 to 0.29 gal.) so I can know when the level is near the top.
Denis.
LinuxGold 08-20-2010, 08:10 AM Gotcha. Thanks all.
Chalupa102 08-20-2010, 01:24 PM Had to go to my college to take care of some things. 76F and sunny with winds from the WNW @ 15mph
- 46.2mpg for 7 miles from home to the gas station
Fill up ended up being 49.4mpg over 545.4 miles using 11.1 gallons
- 52.8mpg for 16.7 miles from gas station to school
- 49.9mpg for 23.4 miles from school to home
Day total: 50.3mpg over 47.1 miles
The tank is at 51.1mpg over 40.2 miles with 12.2 gallons remaining.

Nope, I told them to find their own ride:p. Tore apart the dash and all HVAC ducts the other day. Cleaned out the nests and got the dead corpses out as well.
diamondlarry 08-20-2010, 02:07 PM I had a pretty good day today. The temperature this morning was 67F and it got up to 86F this afternoon with wind S@ 5-10 mph. I drove to work so I could fill up after work as I'm planning to go to Oak Creek, WI for the Milwaukee Hybrid Group meeting. I checked my tires last night and they were "low." They were down to 80 psi in three of them and one was "really low" at 70 psi.:p:D They are now all at proper pressures.;)
89.3 .8-home to work
118.9 10.4-work to station
147.8 8.0-station to home
Average for today was 127.5 mpg.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-20-2010, 02:56 PM Way to go, Larry!!! :woot:

I'm s000 jeal0us :(
Tank guessgauge @860-900km out of 1500, with odometer @1040km, ie full tank @1733-1814km (1077-1127mi) & 3.31-3.46L/100 (67.9-71.1mpg).
I would have to reach 80mpg for the remaining of the current tank to reach 1889mi. :(
I'll always be Iznogoud (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iznogoud) : "I want to be Caliph instead of the Caliph"
Denis.
PS are you an hypermiler when you aren't astonished to hear someone saying that 80 psi is t00 l0w :p ?
May be should I push up my tires to 60PSI, 66PSI, 66.6PSI... ;)
Right Lane Cruiser 08-20-2010, 03:52 PM Denis, I run high pressure too -- the Insight seems to be much more sensitive to tire pressure than most other vehicles but my Elantra also benefited from a boost in pressure.
It was a nice run home, though I did have to stop a bunch more than I wish I did. I accidentally reset the segment FE meter but it gave me a nice way to quantify the differing conditions of my commute. I'll detail that below the usual reporting:
106.6mpg for 14.9mi (Work to home)
The tank is steady at 110.4mpg over 953.6mi with 11 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 104.1mpg over 29.9mi
The gauge got reset at 6.2mi. I had to back calculate to get the value for the trip and also for the FE over the first 6.2mi. The latter 8.7mi clocked in at 121.2mpg. That means the first 6.2mi only averaged 91.2mpg. :p Those early hills and highway speed really hurt!!
Oainac 08-20-2010, 06:14 PM Home to Work 45.1MPG over 15.7Miles
Work to Home 37.1MPG over 15.7Miles (Left work early due to the rain. The rain and "rush hour" traffic hurt mileage a bit)
Die2self 08-20-2010, 06:29 PM home>school>work

daily avg = 24.9 / 26.4 miles
tank is down to 6/8 with 162.3 miles
weekly avg - 24.8 over 131.6 miles

That's my biggest problem with where I live. I can't leave my house without going up a hill and/or stopping within a block of pulling out of my garage. I would love to try a trip leaving from my grandpa's old house.
Gas-x 08-20-2010, 09:44 PM Trip down to work this morning at 4 am was not good
38.6 mpg wet roads and I was tired!
Way home I avg 42.8 for 33.9 miles to my brothers
From there I hit a pb of 46.7 for the next 44 mi to home!:woot:
I am headed down to minneapolis tomorrow for a Twins game against the angels...I see a50 avg ! P&G speed will be lowered and this alone will make a big difference for me.
diamondlarry 08-21-2010, 08:40 PM Had a pretty good day today. I had 86.9 over 191.* miles going to the Milwaukee Hybrid Group meeting. On the way home, I had 90.2 over 199.7 miles. On the trip there, I had to run the headlights about half way and it rained for about 1/3 of the way there.
Gas-x 08-22-2010, 08:10 AM Good numbers how was the Hybrid Group meeting?
some_other_dave 08-22-2010, 08:44 PM Filled today; 48 and a bit MPG. Just a little bit better than my couple of previous tanks. I'll try to keep on improving!
Tires were down a few PSI; I aired them back up again.

I forgot to set my fuel type to HYBRID instead of GAS after I accidentally reset it. So FASing should "register" now.
jcp123 08-22-2010, 10:35 PM Made a trip to Dallas the other day in the Turbobrick. Ran 60-63mph (under 2500rpm as advised), with a/c running most of the way. Believe it or not, that was enough to net 31mpg! I can only imagine what it would have been sans a/c...
some_other_dave 08-23-2010, 12:52 PM One note on my tank--the improvement comes despite one drive at 50% faster than I usually drive. The wife emailed me "EMERGENCY--WATER HEATER BURST"; she couldn't work the shut-off so I drove home post-haste (and then some!) to help.
