View Full Version : Diagnostic tools to "talk" to the battery?
reagle 08-12-2010, 09:59 PM Many people dealing with plugin Prius conversions are using a CAN bus monitor that allows them to get a lot of information about what the battery is seeing. Does anybody know what if anything exists for the HCHIIs that does not require dealer-specific tools that cost multiple thousands? I've read about Scan Gauge but I don't think it lets you talk to the battery itself.

Hey, I read your response to a similar question on greenhybrid, it would be great if we could get this to happen!
What part of Upstate, NY are you in? I'm in the Albany area.
Oh yeah, one more question, how do you like your '07 civic hybrid? I picked on up a couple weeks ago and LOVE it!

Hi reagle;
That I know of? Only the Honda HDS can come close to that. And as you said, its cost places that tool beyond the reach of many owners.
The Scanguage II (with XGauge) would allow you to read much of the extended information broadcast in the CAN bus provided that we can locate the meaningful PID's and then setup a handful of X-Gauges to read and display each PID.
The problem is that we do not have many people with the time and willingness to perform the discovery work on the HCH-II as we have in the much larger Prius community.

How I like my HCHII? I think I absolutely loved it till the first TSB 8-14 I think that was supposed to fix an annoying clunk in rolling from autostop. TSP9-58 made it a much less fun to drive car, but fixed the clunk. I am now at 45k miles and some days I love the car, other- hate it. We'll see what this new big software update does to it.

reagle 08-31-2010, 06:06 PM Hi MSantos, I read a lot of your posts here and on GH/Prius chat. Glad to get your opinion!
So if I were to get ScanGauge, it can get to CAN traffic from ODBII connector or would I have to find the bus somewhere else?
I might be willing to fiddle with it since I hate feeling like a beta tester of a closed black box. Seeing things firsthand works better for me :)

Yes. A later model Scangauge (with the xgauge feature) can interrogate the specific sub-systems via a set of mapped PID's and then display the results after performing any of the math/conversion that may be required.
The key here, is to invest the necessary amount of time to first find the valid PID's and then poke, observe and document the responses. It can be a time consuming affair and unless we have a multi-pronged attack similar to what we did with the Prius, it may never get done. :(

reagle 09-01-2010, 09:22 PM Ok, so all we need is a bunch of people with ScanGauges driving and collecting data. That seems to be already happening, they just need to know PIDs to look at. Ok not as hopeless as I thought ;)
I guess I might as well start . I presume nobody has access to original Honda documentation on the matter?

I'm no technical guru, but I'm an HCHII owner with a ScanGauge and would love to help out in any way i could.
msantos 09-03-2010, 08:33 PM Hi reagle;
I have access to all the Honda documentation and I have yet to see any documents or data sheets pertaining to the CAN protocols as well as the sub-system address ranges and ID's. While this is not an uncommon issue with all manufacturers, we need to first discover the HCH-II PID's and determine which are potentially hiding any information of interest. Once we determine that a particular PID holds valid information we must then decode and convert it to something that can make sense to us.
Here's one of the starting points for the 2G Prius:

Then:

Other very important work was also carried out by folks outside of the CleanMPG community. all in all, quite a bit of cooperative work made it possible for the 2G Prius. The 3G Prius PID's were discovered even sooner despite being different from that of the 2G Prius.

reagle 09-12-2010, 06:53 AM First step taken on my end- got a scanGauge 2 coming my way from the group buy. After I play with it a a bit, will start mapping things out.
There is no reason (that I know of as of right now) HCH owners can't get as far as Prius people did :)
