View Full Version : Week of August 9th - August 15th 2010 (Nat Avg $2.79)
Right Lane Cruiser 08-09-2010, 06:07 AM A new week is upon us!!
Quite muggy this morning (94% humidity!) but I got some lucky breaks on the way in and didn't have to stop for some of the more frustrating lights. :)
71F, no wind, overcast:
113.0mpg for 22.6mi (Home to work)
The tank is steady at 111.6mpg over 591.9mi with 19 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
LinuxGold 08-09-2010, 07:01 AM Refilled tank yesterday (early because of no FCD as of yet)
342.1 miles / 6.423 gallons / 53.2617 mpg (156.65% of EPA!)
:bananahuge:
Right Lane Cruiser 08-09-2010, 07:31 AM Hey hey!! Nice progress, Scott!! :woot:
PaleMelanesian 08-09-2010, 08:28 AM I was just off this morning. I got a mile out before realizing the laptop was still at home.
84.3 / 13.2 miles. Not counting the detour, 89.3 / 10.6.
The tank is at 84.2 / 764 miles. Well below 1/2, approaching 1/4.
LinuxGold 08-09-2010, 09:29 AM The tank is at 84.2 / 764 miles. Well below 1/2, approaching 1/4.
I had my eyeballs on tank gauge at all of time w/o FCD... I noticed when I tried to put in more effort, trying to change my technique, the needle moved slower and slower....
Initially I thought it would be around 47mpg, but no... it was 53... to my surprise!
:bananalama:
PaleMelanesian 08-09-2010, 09:40 AM Make a point to mark the miles at F. Fills are highly variable above F, but once you hit that mark, it's VERY consistent. Using the F mark and SG reported mpg, I can estimate total tank range within 10 miles. (maybe 1140 this time, minus any "special events")
epurvee 08-09-2010, 01:25 PM I have had a significant drop in power and fuel efficiency this weekend. I believe my catalytic converter is clogged. I have the replacement, I just need to put it on. Still got decent numbers this morning despite that.
61.2 MPG / 11.0 Miles
Right Lane Cruiser 08-09-2010, 03:27 PM That commute went much better than Friday's!! :)
Very warm (at least in context of this summer's temps) today.
88F (96F heat index), 4mph headwind from the NNE, sunny:
120.5mpg for 23.1mi (Work to home)
The tank is back up to 112.0mpg over 615.0mi with 19 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 116.7mpg over 45.8mi

38.0- 6.2 mile home.
tank sitting at 38 mpg maybe 50 miles. I don't think i got a good fill this time. I clicked it twice and the needle showing under the f mark so soon. Oh well I'll see and if it is it'll even out next tank
Chalupa102 08-09-2010, 09:12 PM Finally got the new tires on today: Michelin Energy Saver A/S. 86F and mostly cloudy with winds from the SSE @ 7mph
- 47.2mpg for 17.4 miles from home to shop
- 48.4mpg for 2.5 miles from shop to store/ATM
- 37.5mpg for 2.6 miles from store back to shop to get tires done
- 44.8mpg for 2.5 miles from shop to gas station to "properly air up tires"
- 50.7mpg for 20.4 miles from gas station to home
Day total: 47.5mpg over 45.7 miles
The tank is at 48.0mpg over 472 miles with 3.2 gallons remaining.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-10-2010, 07:04 AM I'll have some numbers later today. Working from home.
PaleMelanesian 08-10-2010, 08:33 AM Nice numbers:
92.1 / 10.8 home
86.4 / 10.6 this morning. Traffic held me up at one point, and a mistimed light hurt me.
The tank is at 84.3 / 785 miles and approaching 1/4 on the gauge.
LinuxGold 08-10-2010, 09:05 AM I MISS reporting my mpg on daily basis. :(
Gas-x 08-10-2010, 09:09 AM Are you going to put your scan tool in soon? Would be fun to watch you improve daily .

As soon as Amy B (MPGuino) respond about where she got connector from and the connector acquired, I will get everything set up and ready to go.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-10-2010, 10:18 AM Well, this has been an interesting morning. I got home yesterday to find a package had not been left at my door -- they wanted a signature. So I decided to work from home and go over to the post office early in the morning to pick it up (the slip said after 6AM so I figured no problem, right?) Of course, no windows open until 8:30... and I've got a 9:00 conference call to be on. Not only that, my link into the company went down so I had to drive in to get the laptop I'd left there yesterday. :p
So here I am back at home on the laptop I had to fetch... just in time for my next phone call. Guess I'll drive over my lunch to get the package. :(
I took the FFH over to the post office and back... I was in a hurry and didn't record the totals but the total trip average was in the mid 50's.
The car only sat for about 12min in the work lot...
75F, 4mph wind from the ESE, overcast:
102.2mpg for 21.8mi (Home to work -- bad traffic.. had to reroute to get in faster)
120.5mpg for 23.0mi (Work to home)
The tank average is down to 111.8mpg over 659.9mi with 17 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 110.6mpg over 44.8mi

epurvee 08-10-2010, 12:33 PM This morning the downward trend of the metro continues. I'm going to have to put up on blocks and get to fixing. Didn't do too bad getting home.

53.4 MPG / 13.0 Miles work to home
lxmike 08-10-2010, 03:03 PM What a messy day here! Drive into work was fine, no rain or ambulances this time :p

Yup. Ever since I started driving i've been trying to improve my miles per gallon. This should help even more.

Like the rest of us. =)
Right Lane Cruiser 08-11-2010, 07:05 AM That was annoying. Something changed on my company network and it took me an hour to sort out web access. :p
I had what I call the perfect level of traffic this morning -- not enough to be an obstacle but just enough to ensure I only had to come to a complete stop at two of my 30+ traffic lights. :D
In spite of wet roads and headlight usage...

Oh how I wish!! I'm stuck with this HP laptop running XP Pro. :(
Besides, the problem wasn't with the notebook itself, it was with a new forced proxy configuration on the network filtering all packets.
Keep up the good work!! Don't forget to push your Insight some more...
*ducks again*
Only when I have to. Ever try pushing even a light car just 1/4mi without any help? On mostly level ground? I have... and it isn't fun. Pushing is mostly just for those last few feet if your glide didn't last quite long enough (either from misjudgment at the beginning or because somebody caused you to take evasive maneuvers in the middle).
I know you were kidding but getting massive improvements in FE from pushing just isn't practical.
LinuxGold 08-11-2010, 07:30 AM Oh how I wish!! I'm stuck with this HP laptop running XP Pro. :(
Same here with Gateway laptop running XP Pro SP 3. At least one of our 5 servers are running Ubuntu. :)
epurvee 08-11-2010, 08:05 AM Commute in was decent considering the diminished capacity of the Metro. This weekend I'm planning on putting the new cat. The ride home was about par for course.
61.9 MPG / 11.0 Miles home to work
51.9 MPG / 13.0 Miles work to home
PaleMelanesian 08-11-2010, 08:23 AM A friendly reminder, especially to those in warm climates:
Check your battery's fluid levels. Mine has been a little low on the voltage readings, and when I checked, the fluid was uncomfortably low. It's topped up now, and seems to hold a better charge. You can add *clean/distilled* water, since all that evaporates is water. The acid concentration will be back to where it was originally.

86.8 mpg home last night
94.3 this morning

Approximately 9.55 gallon used?
PaleMelanesian 08-11-2010, 08:38 AM The math is right. I never bother checking that on the SG, since I can easily back-calculate it just like you did.
LinuxGold 08-11-2010, 08:43 AM The math is right. I never bother checking that on the SG, since I can easily back-calculate it just like you did.
Because I am guessimating my tank @ 3/4 to around roughly 2.875 gallons used. I am now at 170 miles @ 3/4 of tank remaining, approx 59 mpg... hoping that it is right without FCD.... *grin*...
PaleMelanesian 08-11-2010, 08:53 AM Ah, I can help with that. I can get up to 3.8 gallons above F, topped off to the brim. From F to 1/2 is 4.8 gallons, from 1/2 to E is 3.9 gallons.
* I call it E when the warning light is fading in and out, lit about 1/2 of the time.

Your tank topped off to the brim is 13.84 gallons (with some gas from 2 gallons can) total (from looking at your mileage log with 1114 miles)?
PaleMelanesian 08-11-2010, 09:12 AM The 2 gallons was immediately followed by a full fillup, so it doesn't affect the results.
Fully complete numbers:
3.8 gallons above F on the gauge. Topped off = 1.8 gal past first click, first click about 2 gal above F. YMMV at various pumps.
4.8 gallons from F to 1/2.
3.9 gallons from 1/2 to E. (light glowing 1/2 the time)
1.3 gallons from E to a dry tank.
13.8 gallons total.

The scan guage II should be here today. Hopefully before I head off to work.
tpmjr2004 08-11-2010, 02:13 PM Had my best fill-up yet last night, both in terms of distance and mpg: 540.8 miles on 10.761 gallons for a total of 50.25 mpg!! (201.02% of CleanMPG EPA and 193.29% of 2008 EPA). I felt comfortable with my DWL, so I decided to start some P&G this tank, and it shows. Hopefully my next tank will be better with the entire tank on P&G.
From gas station to home last night: 2.6 miles @ 47.7mpg, 96 F -- Tank at 47.7 mpg @ 2.6 miles
My trip in to work this morning: 39.3 miles @ 49.6 mpg, 84 F -- Tank at 49.5 mpg @ 41.9 miles
Had to make a trip to the grocery store for lunch to pick up some stuff for lunch for the rest of the week:
To store: 1.5 miles @ 38.6 mpg, 101 F -- Tank at 49.0 mpg @43.4 miles
Back to Work: 1.3 miles @ 53.0 mpg, 101 F -- Tank at 49.2 mpg @ 44.7 miles.
Hopefully I can keep this pace up, but it is hard work. Plus, after work, with no a/c on, it can get a bit warm. I've just got to catch Mr. Pancake in Div. B.
lxmike 08-11-2010, 03:04 PM I ran a few errends today. i need a new notepad, so all i can report is todays average is 39.4 mpg- 35.8 miles. Tank average sitting at 38.5 at 92 miles.

LinuxGold 08-12-2010, 08:01 AM 216.4 miles 1/2 way between 3/4 and 1/2 on tank gauge.
epurvee 08-12-2010, 08:03 AM I did a quick swap of my bad PCV valve and looks like I gained a little bit back from the Metro. This weekend when the new cat is put on, I'm pretty sure things will be back to normal. Going back home was alright, but mileage still wasn't impressive for what I can do in this thing.
70.3 MPG / 11.0 Miles home to work
52.1 MPG / 13.0 Miles work to home
PaleMelanesian 08-12-2010, 08:06 AM The Scan Guage II is working great I just need to calibrate it.
I am using 4 guages in this configuration (any suggestions?)
Average MPG Voltage/GPH
Instantaneous MPG fWT
The 1 thing Scan Guages need is an option to cycle through certain gauges on a timer. Like every 5 seconds switch between voltage and gallons per hour.
After a little time, you'll get the feel for what iMPG relates to what GPH, and you'll only need one of them. Then you can watch voltage the whole time.
Average MPG is my most valuable gauge. Focus on keeping that trip average moving up.
PaleMelanesian 08-12-2010, 08:08 AM I had 81.2 mpg home last night.
95.3 this morning, my second best morning commute. :D
The tank is up to a best-ever 84.6 mpg / 828 miles and 1/4 on the gauge.

A little trick I discovered when the scangauge overheats and the display turns black: Wet your finger and touch the screen. Repeat a few times. That spot where you touched it will be cooler and readable.

I thought GPH wasn't very useful because you can't really relate it to anything. So I just have it show voltage now.

Right Lane Cruiser 08-12-2010, 09:02 PM Hey! Nice work there, Jason!! :woot:
I did get to drive the FFH this evening and I tried something different on the way down. I set the AC at 80F and the lowest fan speed (dash claimed it was 93F outside) and did my best hypermiling to see what the result would be. It wasn't too bad, actually. And I arrived at my meeting dry instead of rather damp.
The way back I just did the crossflow window setting trick (2.5" down for the driver and rear passenger windows) for half the trip and I was doing really well with the dash reporting 87F... until it started raining. It got really hard to keep the numbers up when it began raining hard enough that the highest speed the wipers would do wasn't sufficient for even 30mph. It eased off by the time I got home but half of that trip was really messy. With the headlights and wipers on. By the end the dash claimed it was 70F?
I'm impressed with this car's performance!

Oainac 08-12-2010, 11:03 PM Went to a Sonic with a friend tonight because there are none around here.
It was about 30Miles round trip (didn't record the exact number of miles)
I got around 37.4MPG round trip. This included highway and city driving with a lot of confusion and A/C usage.
alvaro84 08-13-2010, 02:22 AM My mileage log shows that I'm not doig too well in the last week... had much 2-up (and 2.5-up :D) rides on freeways and main roads and the extra weight, overall higher speed and less P&G took their toll on my FE. Last 4 tanks for Teresa (all within one week, with this small tank I can't do what can be done with a plugin hybrid used in town :D), on bit more than 1600km (1000mi):
2.98l/100km - 79.0mpgUS
3.15l/100km - 74.7mpgUS
3.16l/100km - 74.6mpgUS
3.04l/100km - 77.4mpgUS
All sub-80mpg and most are over 3l/100km :(
With extra weight and higher speeds I tried to do some DWL yet I don't know if it's effective, but one thing is sure: Teresa is not that brisk with the extra weight and aero drag (especially with the 1.5-times-me friend) so at low revs my pulses get longer, accelerations slower, hill climbing rev tresholds higher so I did not really feel the urge to P&G on the open road (and especially not when climbing a hill). I still embrace the opportunities to glide on descents and P&G at lower gears when in town (and FAS to stops of course :)).
Ciliegia was ridden 1-up (by shiNIN) more than 2-up (though we had to do some lane splitting in a traffic jam on the Budapest bypass, 2-up at that), last tank was 2.9l/100km = 81.2mpgUS, next fill is nigh.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-13-2010, 06:11 AM A bit of rain but lots of standing water this morning. :p I started out well (hit 146.6mpg at only 0.8mi in) but couldn't maintain when the wind changed direction. :(
70F, 11mph crosswind from the N shifting to 10-19mph head/crosswind from the ESE, rain and lots of water on the roads:
106.2mpg for 22.6mi (Home to work)
The tank is back down to 112.0mpg over 780.0mi with 15 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
I had hoped to make a good run of it on my last commute to this location but I guess the weather had other plans for me. :p
LinuxGold 08-13-2010, 07:15 AM Went to my side job along route 40 yesterday with MASSIVE stops, practiced HARD on DWB, smart braking and P&G in between stops. A BIG hit on FE, but at least I worked very hard to salvage what I can.
Went to work today, so far 298 miles just hairline below 1/2 on gauge. Suspecting around 46-48 mpg according to my paper FCD. :eyebrow:
epurvee 08-13-2010, 07:50 AM Had a decent commute in the Metro. I attribute that more to me becoming more skilled with P&G right now. Can't wait to see what it can do when I getting it 100% again.
70.3 MPG / 11.0 Miles home to work
Gas-x 08-13-2010, 08:21 AM I drove to my parents last night in the Aveo pulling my 5x10 utility trailer with my grill on it for my brothers 30th birthday party. He and his wife are in town from California. I drove 28.3 mi round trip at 33.8 mpg avg and tank is at 40.1.The way there I avg 37.7. The drive home it was raining and blowing hard I had to stop and move a tree off the gravel road . Lots off sticks and debris... Many stops and starts...Thought I did ok considering the weather.
PaleMelanesian 08-13-2010, 08:36 AM 58.6 mpg / 2.9 mi - work to dr appt. I could have taken the longer 70+ mpg route, there was a long wait.
101 / 3.3 - dr to music practice :D
70.7 / 8.9 - home in the dark, and I badly timed several lights - had to suddenly brake from 55 mph once.
94.5 / 10.7 - this morning. That's better! It wasn't a clean run even.
The tank is down and then partly up to 84.4 / 861 miles and 1/4 tank left.
Chalupa102 08-13-2010, 08:55 AM From yesterday:
Went to Six Flags with 2 friends. 74F and cloudy. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to check the wind yesterday. I would guess that I had a tailwind heading there and a headwind on the way back.
- 52.7mpg for 32 miles from home to Six Flags
- 44.9mpg for 32.9 miles from Six Flags to home
Day total: 48.8mpg over 64.9 miles
The tank is up to 48.1mpg over 537.9 miles with 1.9 gallons remaining.
PaleMelanesian 08-13-2010, 09:08 AM Looks like you had a south wind. http://www.weather.com/weather/pastweather/hourly/01001?stn=0&when=081210
diamondlarry 08-13-2010, 02:56 PM Pretty good day today. Took my daughter to school to pick up her schedule for her senior year and get her yearbook picture taken. It was 6.5 miles out and back. I had 97.5 there and 129.7 coming back. This puts today's total at 111.3 mpg. The temp was 87F and wind was SE@ 5-10 mph. Of those 6.5 miles, just just a tick over 5 of them were either northbound or southbound.
LinuxGold 08-13-2010, 02:58 PM Will refill on the way home, wish me luck!!
Right Lane Cruiser 08-13-2010, 03:08 PM Nice work, Larry!
Good luck, Scott! :)
I tried... I really did. Traffic was a bugger. I had her up to 129.9mpg at one point but couldn't hold it. :p
80F, 6mph cross/tailwind from the E, overcast:
119.6mpg for 22.8mi (Work to home)
The tank is back up to 112.3mpg over 802.8mi with 14 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 112.5mpg over 45.5mi
Next week begins the fun of optimizing a new (shorter) route! I expect the numbers to go down...
PaleMelanesian 08-13-2010, 03:09 PM Linux - Luck! :D
Sean - your fuel usage should go down as well, though, so it's a net positive. (and a positive to me in the FE challenge ;))

Well, it has been a month since I filled last... how much longer do you think I can make this tank last? ;)
PaleMelanesian 08-13-2010, 03:23 PM Heh. Can you make it for the next 1.5 months without filling? On a new route, no less.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-13-2010, 03:32 PM Dunno... the route is about 1/3 shorter. 38% shorter in point of fact. :)
lxmike 08-13-2010, 04:31 PM Today numbers aren't bad at all. In fact I'm happy with them :)
totals was 39.7- 13.4 miles
I am allowng myself one fas at the start of my trips so i have to use it wisely! :p besides that ity is helping me with using other techniques more better. Of course haveing an empty road behind helps with working the n.i.c.e on coasting.
Oainac 08-13-2010, 05:08 PM -37.XMPG over 15.4Miles
My sg2 wasn't recording for the first .3Miles also the A/C was used about 50% of the time.
Die2self 08-13-2010, 06:18 PM home>work
= 26.1 / 13.3 miles (81F S@7)
work>home
= 25.8 / 13.4 miles (102F (Heat Index = 107) SW@12 Gusting to 21(mostly this))
114.8F in the truck from the parking lot and down to 109.6F when I pulled in at home
daily avg = 25.9 / 26.7 miles
tank is still over F with 30.7 miles (~25.8 MPG)
weekly avg = 26.3 / 145.4 miles
LinuxGold 08-13-2010, 08:40 PM Refilled my tank.
Before I refilled the tank, I was worried since I had to go through heavy traffic on Route 40, stopped a lot, couldn't DWB pretty much in seriously inefficient traffic lights, one green light leads to next RED light every time.
I guesstimated it to be around 46 to 48 until I refilled:
325.9 miles / 6.312 Gallons
51.6318 MPG!! (151.858% of EPA)
Which means I salvaged pretty well yesterday! =)
PLUS I TOPPED off, tried to fill up, looks like it took forever to arrive the brim, can see gas floating just below the brim so I decided to stop, filled up to 8.193 Gallons (1.881 gallons over first click)!
diamondlarry 08-14-2010, 11:07 AM I guess today wasn't too bad but definitely room for improvement.
117.9 11.6-to IHOP for breakfast
82.4 .8-IHOP to Walmart
102.6 14.2-Walmart to home via a scenic route past my grandpa's house
Average for today was 107.9 mpg.
I am wanting to go to the meet-up in Wisconsin next week. If I do, I'll top off before I leave and again when I get back home.
Gas-x 08-14-2010, 11:43 AM Sean you could make that tank last a while in the insight if you drove the Elantra..:D
Right Lane Cruiser 08-14-2010, 12:53 PM I've thought about that but I don't really trust it anymore. I've got to save up a little more and then have some maintenance done on it. :o
Besides, that would be cheating and at the very least would use more fuel. :p
jcp123 08-14-2010, 06:57 PM Just filled up the Volvo...301,2 miles on just under 14,894 gallons makes for 20,22mpg. Not bad for the commute I have (1,7 miles each way), but it definitely leaves room for improvement.

An engine block heater would improve your MPGs on such a short trip.
jcp123 08-14-2010, 08:21 PM Ah I forgot about those! Probably would, although when I get up in the morning it's already in the mid-80's and after work it's 100+ outside. In winter it'd be a huge help...where would I source one?

From the dealer or online.
alvaro84 08-15-2010, 01:33 AM Yesterday I filled Teresa. Now that I'm on my commute (no freeways :)) I could improve my FE again.
Last low-fuel-light-to-low-fuel-light figure was 3.04l/100km (77.4mpgUS), now the fill-to-fill 'control' figure is 2.944l/100km (79.9mpgUS) - it's the improvement of the last 94km (58.4mi)
Right Lane Cruiser 08-15-2010, 11:38 AM Took the FFH to Church.
64F down, 14mph cross/tailwind from the W, sunny,
68F back, 21 mph cross/headwind from the W, sunny:
61.2mpg for 17.8mi (Home to Church)
60.8mpg for 17.6mi (Church to home)
Day Total: 61.0mpg over 35.4mi

No dealer within any reasonable driving distance :( any particular online vendor yall would recommend?
