View Full Version : Sg2 Gas-x 07-21-2010, 10:35 PM I will be ordering a scan gauge soon and can't wait any longer! I think it will help me out so much. Had to share and get that out of my system for the night.:woot: Right Lane Cruiser 07-21-2010, 11:32 PM Oh boy!! You are about to have a whole new world opened up for you. :D I never hit 40mpg for a tank until I got the ScanGauge... and I got that high the first tank with it! And that even though the SG was only attached for just a bit less than the last half of the tank. jimepting 07-22-2010, 06:22 AM You'll love it! One thing I did on mine which added a lot to the usefulness was to program an X-gauge to allow display of the Insight 1 lean burn state. The code can be found by searching for Wayne's directions over in the Insight 1 subsection. I'll try to find it, if you have trouble. The instantaneous FE display on the SGII is pretty much useless, but you have the FCD on the car's instrument panel. Lean burn is not accounted for by the SGII, so that distorts the FE display. The water temp display is very helpful in monitoring for overheating when you use a grill block. Paying close attention to the TSP numbers is helpful in improving your technique, and you will find posts on that subject. jimepting 07-22-2010, 06:54 AM Here is a post on the X-gauge code you need to program the leanburn gauge: http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22977&highlight=ScanGauge+Code Gas-x 07-22-2010, 07:58 AM I would love to take advantage of the help you have provided however I do not own an insight 1 even though it is my # 1 fav. I am just an Aveo driver with no hybrid or lean burn to speak of. What screen is the most useful if instantanious is useless....? Gas-x 07-22-2010, 08:01 AM Oh boy!! And that even though the SG was only attached for just a bit less than the last half of the tank. You started getting 40 with your old elantra or newer one? And with having the gauge for the second half of the tank? Good news for me then!!:D Can't wait to get that thing!!!!!!!:woot: Right Lane Cruiser 07-22-2010, 08:50 AM You started getting 40 with your old elantra or newer one? And with having the gauge for the second half of the tank? Good news for me then!!:D Can't wait to get that thing!!!!!!!:woot: That was in my '02 Elantra. You'll certainly enjoy it! As for gauges in my Insight, I have the original ScanGauge version in that car and it doesn't have the XGauge capability. I keep the instantaneous up for comparison to the built in FCD (the larger the difference the better the lean burn), Coolant temp, Intake Air Temp, and 12V status. For the Elantra I drop the Intake Temp and add in the Current Trip average to keep an eye on. I do have a second generation SG in the Elantra and coded the Current Trip gauge myself (XGauge). PaleMelanesian 07-22-2010, 08:52 AM Same story for me. I had a best tank of 42 before the SG, and my first 'gauged tank was 46. I haven't been below that mark since. Gas-x 07-22-2010, 09:15 AM Thanks guys. I'm asuming this site is the best place to order one? PaleMelanesian 07-22-2010, 09:23 AM Yes. Scangauge has a minimum price for anyone who sells it, but with a special members-only deal, we have a lower price here. Gas-x 07-22-2010, 09:41 AM Plus I get a nice Cleanmpg decal! It will be like driving with glasses when I get that thing.... see exactly what is going on and how I can alter my driving habits to max potential ! I'm sure I will be asking a few questions to you guys about it but I know how it is here....people are happy to reply! jimepting 07-22-2010, 10:03 AM You'll love it! Ops, not sure how I made that mistake:o For "normal" ICE powered vehicles, the most important gauge is going to be the instantaneous FE, or MPG gauge, assuming your vehicle isn't already so equiped. It is one of the normal gauges and requires no additional programming. Another nice gauge is the closed loop/open loop gauge(can't remember the actual name). That gauge will tell you you when your engine is in deacceleration shut-off. If you fas a bunch at night, the battery voltage gauge is very helpful in maintaining charge. If you resort to grill blocks, the temperature gauge will help you understand your cooling effectiveness. The Throttle Position Sensor(TPS) gauge will help you a lot as you practice the "hang time" technique. And, as I said, I find the programable X-gauge for trip average MPG to be useful. Good luck with your new gauge:Banane01: PaleMelanesian 07-22-2010, 10:06 AM I find the trip average mpg to be the most useful. Just focus on keeping that one moving up. I believe the newest SG's have that pre-programmed as on of the gauges. Gas-x 07-22-2010, 10:36 AM I will soon know what you are talking about...! Damionk 07-22-2010, 10:43 AM And, as I said, I find the programable X-gauge for trip average MPG to be useful. Good luck with your new gauge:Banane01: I find the trip average mpg to be the most useful. Just focus on keeping that one moving up. I believe the newest SG's have that pre-programmed as on of the gauges. The new version does in fact have trip average. It is called AVG. Loop is LP. Gas-x 07-22-2010, 09:41 PM Placed an order for my scan gauge .... didn't see how long it takes to come, any ideas? Can't wait for that thing to show up! Also what is the pre-programming all about? Damionk 07-23-2010, 09:17 AM Wayne (xcel) ships all the ScanGauges personally. So, if he has some in stock it should be only a few days. The pre-programming is just Wayne entering the engine size, tank capacity, and a couple of the x-gauges. You can post in the SG topic or ask Wayne if you want to know more. Gas-x 07-23-2010, 09:34 AM A few days sounds good to me... Gas-x 08-01-2010, 03:56 PM I have the instant mpg, avg, map and coolant temp as my display. Right Lane Cruiser 08-01-2010, 04:58 PM Don't forget to watch voltage if you are FASing. Gas-x 08-01-2010, 07:08 PM Sean , what am I going to do with the voltage information? How do I use that gauge to help me out? Just to show me how much I am charging after using the battery on fas? lxmike 08-01-2010, 08:36 PM It's to keep track of battery voltage when you are fas'ing alot. Gas-x 08-01-2010, 09:36 PM What is to keep track of? Just so I don't use the battery more then I charge it? I guess what I'm saying is what am I going to differently if it goes down? Just allow it to charge more and not allow it to go so low it gets prematurely wore out? SentraSE-R 08-02-2010, 12:43 AM You don't want to let your battery voltage drop below about 11.6. My SE-R has a high capacity alternator, and never drops voltage while P&Ging at night with the headlights on. But it does drop at stoplights. My xB's weak alternator combined with a small battery mean that my voltage continually drops with nighttime P&Ging. So I have to do a 2:1 duty cycle with the Scion, about 10 minutes P&Ging with EOC alternating with about 5 minutes P&Ging with NICE-on to recharge the battery. PaleMelanesian 08-02-2010, 08:17 AM I plug in with a trickle charger at home any day when I've used the headlights. It costs a lot less than burning gas for the side benefit of battery charging - cents per month vs dollars per month. Gas-x 08-02-2010, 10:08 AM Thanks for the info I was looking for. Making sense now! deleond2 08-02-2010, 04:24 PM The scan guage was the big motivator in my hypermiling efforts. It helps me keep track of my high score, and like most game players, you are always striving to get a higher score. Gas-x 08-02-2010, 09:41 PM I hear ya there! I am looking at making a grill block ... The cold engine with short trip combo is a tough hole to climb out of. The Aveo is not so efficient when cold...like most cars i'm sure. Love the SGII just knowing what is going on helps change habits so much and the right foot sensitivity Right Lane Cruiser 08-02-2010, 10:31 PM A grill block is helpful -- so is an EBH. Keep an eye on that coolant temp gauge with a grill block so you don't overheat on longer trips. Search the forums for "warm up P&G" -- it is helpful. You want to be gentle with the engine when cold but you can still get improvement using that technique. Gas-x 08-03-2010, 06:57 AM Once again thanks a million Sean! PaleMelanesian 08-03-2010, 08:01 AM To tag onto Sean's comment about Warmup P&G, FAS is even more useful during the first mile or two. Idle fuel consumption is WAY higher, so the value of FAS is much larger. I know that my cooling fan comes on at 206F water temp. If I have 2-3 commutes in a week where the final temp reaches or passes that mark, I open up the grille a bit. Just a single time is no problem. The fan is doing its job. You don't want to be running it too much, though, since it uses a lot of juice and there's no benefit once you're above 180F or so.
